I think the issue was Sony wanted him to record and release material faster than he could. George at the time was a cash cow so Sony wanted to capitalize on that, but George was more interested in quality than quantity.

He did get it looked over by a top lawyer, but they will still screw you over if they can get away with it. All record companies are the same. Most people will sign anything just to get a leg up on the ladder, George did this with Innervision when he was very young. Prince had the same problems and went around with 'slave' written on his face for a while.

Unfortunately, Prince inadvertently turned what was a very serious problem in the music industry into a joke by his bizarre behavior with the "slave" on his face and all that. The music industry made Prince their scapegoat & caused them to shift the energy of the debate from them to the artists themselves.
