  • Thanks for your reviews. I appreciate watching them, and I LOVE that Genz-benz(may get one because of you), but I was wondering if you had any reviews for the Kingston Artist series. Thanks!

  • 3:32 ASSive!

  • I do like the tone from neck pickup. Seems like moving the posision made a noticible difference

  • You are the best demo player Mr. Ed sir. I love your books and videos. I just spent my life savings on the MTD Kingston Z5 tobacco sunburst with a rosewood fretboard. I was eyeing the Fender 5 Deluxe, as you are a Fender guy too, but wanted to know how you felt those two compared. Love your stuff Mr. Ed. Please respond as I don't have your master knowledge to compare those two. Thanks!

  • @Ikillpeopleforfree - Hard to compare the two, they are totally different styles of bass. They are both nice in their own way. The MTD is 35" scale, 24 frets, humbuckers... Fender is... Fender. But enjoy your bass and play it well.

  • @Ikillpeopleforfree

I think you made the right choice...

Yeah, Fender but.... come on...the MTD is just a whole different level...

  • @PowermadNavigator I really like my Fender USA P & Jazz basses and now after playing my 4 and 5 string MTD KZ basses for a few months, I can say they are so easy to play with a super low action and no fret buzz and are the best basses I have owned in quite a few years. I really want a ZON bass someday too. Lakelands are not really as impressive for the money. Just glad Ed was able to share about the MTDs.

  • @Ikillpeopleforfree

Lakland make epic basses you need to get the hang of them and ofc you need a good amp.ZON are very very impressive, but as far as Lakland go...well I find nice comparison with Sadowsky. Both are much better than Fender. You need to be unable to read to state otherwise.I'll probably never own either cuz I'm poor and with the whole "made in USA" price deal, but I work at a Fender music store so I know their capabilities :)

How much did u spend on the MTD?

  • @Derekbasscovers - Nope, wasn't me. All us bald guys with beards look alike.

  • Ed, did you have a chance to play any of the fretless CRB models? Are they up there in quality with the fretted ones? Thank you for posting it!

  • Ed,would be REALY great if you make a straight comparison of maples and rosewoods fingerboards,I'm sure that many people are interested about that discussion and there's not so many videos about that subject.

    cheers....

  • @123andrelevy - I think you can make more significant tonal changes by using different strings. Maple is a little brighter and snappier than rosewood, but you would hear the difference between nickel or stainless strings, roundwounds or flatwounds a lot more clearly.

  • Wow! Gorgieous B string.

  • Mr. Ed Friedland, i invite you to listen and try the MOZINA bass Guitars and Electric guitars.... This intruments are made in Ecuador under FODERA Luthier Licensed. As well as i know about it, this intruments are hand made with exotics ecuadorians woods. and I'd like to know what do you think about this new brand and obviously the quality sound of them. Thank you.

  • @095513467 - Well, I have no idea where I'd find one of those in the US. Got any ideas?

  • @BassGuitarMag I´m asking for your request. But i´ll answer you in few days... but you can read about them in facebook/MCM-GuitarsMozina-Guitars. or you tube also...

  • always the best reviews on you tube...much respect.

  • You have the best job ever!

  • What a joke. A 'garbage' SX bass sounds 10,000X better & costs about $100, because they have ash bodies. Basswood just farts. It is the exact opposite of what a bass needs (way 2 soft). They do this 2 save $ (a few dollars - literally), & purposely cripple the sound 2 try & drive sales 2 their 'real' basses, made with actual halfway decent woods. What a scam.

  • Dude, you have the greatest job in the world haha

  • Ed I'm going between two basses right now. The Schecter Stilleto-5 and the MTD Kingston Z5. I currently have a Dean Edge Fretless 5, and i totally love it. I just needa fretted 5 for slap and that extra 5th string too.

  • Hi Ed, thanks for your videos. I'm buying a bass around $ 600 and my options are the MTD Saratoga or the G&L JB-2, both jazz and passive (I've heard not very good comments about the cheaper fender models) but in my country I have no opportunity to play it because they're not in stores. What would be your choice? I play mostly funk and some jazz ... regards

  • @gatobinario - Well, they are both nice instruments. I personally have no problem with the Fender MIM basses, they are good for the money, so I wouldn't rule them out either. But I'm afraid I can't tell you what you should buy. I haven't played a JB-2 ... a Tribute series I'm assuming? Anyway, they are all pretty much equal...

  • @BassGuitarMag Hi Ed, Thanks for your great vids and your talent playing. Let me ask you something: How many frets it has the saratoga basses? Thanks

  • @gatobinario hey bro i personally own a MM fender P bass, and its solid as anything else i've played. i own an american jazz and it holds its own with it to a great extent. the real difference is the smaller details, it goes out of tune a bit quicker the fret edges aren't as smooth and you have to adjust the truss every now and again. still in terms of tone and feel they do just fine you just have to take care of em decently.

  • @henry12350 Hello henry, thanks. ¿what do you think about the affinity series, compared to MIM fenders? it's the only fender in stores here right now... saludos

  • @gatobinario i dont know about those, there is a noticeable difference between fenders and squires. only the higher end squires are worth it i think. you might as well get one of the others you were talking about. those are much better than squires.

  • Hey Ed, time for a new upload bro! I love your stuff and I'm beginning to feel like it's summer break and I'm waiting for my favorite show to come back on in the fall.

Hey guys -- how about Ed doing a review EVERY WEEK?

    :)

  • @gnpahdc - Glad you're enjoying the vids. One a week is way more than I could handle. I actually do have a life that encompasses much more than shooting product demos!

  • Ed -- time for a new upload, bro! I've been checking every day, of course, like we all do and I'm starting to feel like it's summer break and I'm waiting for my favorite show to come back on in the fall.

Hey you guys, how about Ed doing one review EVERY WEEK!?!?

    :)

  • Hi Ed, just a question, If you had to choose one over the other , which one would you choose?

  • @SantiagoGT15 - One is a 4 string, the other is a 5. One is a Jazz bass, the other is a P.... I'd have to have both.

  • CRB 5 or Carvin SB5000? which is better for the value?

  • @trevjay - they are not comparably priced so it's not really a good comparison. The SB is several hundred dollars more.

  • greeting from japan!

this video made me want to buy one of them..

  • Instant response!! Proving once again that Ed is not human. Some kinda bass alien sent to earth to help us pathetic earthlings find our musical way. Thanks Ed!

  • Hey Ed! Flat wound strings seem to be really high tension too me. But you can't beat the sound on a P-bass. Any experience with lower tension flatwounds? I played a bass a while a go and the flats were real loose and "sloppy", any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • @macflapalicious - Thomastik Jazz Flats are a nice low tension flatwound. They also sound great, but they are not cheap. If you like a loose feel, these are the ones.

  • would these basses be good for metal music?!?!?! Please respond! :)

  • @CsrMgrDesjardins - Sure, why not?

  • Ed, how does the B string on the CRB compare to the Fender American P5? Which one is better in your opinion?

  • @MrRedrocket42 - Hard to compare, the different woods give them different qualities. The MTD is nice and tight, but the P5 has more "dimension" if that makes any sense.

  • @steverolfeca Just look at the Buzz Feiten site - it tells you it can be installed on guitars with a zero fret etc., and if it comes pre-fitted it will look exactly like that instrument's standard nut. They just adjust the nut to compensate correctly, plus it involves saddle adjustments too

  • I was doing some more reading on the zero fret issue, and it turns out that the Feiten system doesn't use a stagger at the nut, like an Earvana compensated nut. So a zero fret is possible- the Feiten system just calls for it to sit a slightly different distance from the first fret.

  • Wouldn't the zero-fret cancel out any effect of having the Feiten system, if the open string is just breaking over the zero-fret anyway?

Zero-frets are nice, and so is the Feiten system. But it just seems to me like it would be one or the other.

  • @eekleefeld - I get your point. But... Mike Tobias has been doing this for a long time. I have to assume he knows how to make it work.

  • PS: That bridge pickup sure is snappy!!

  • I had heard a basswood body was not really appealing to the eye... might not be the best, but it still look pretty neat in Sunburst

  • Just wondering how the CRB can have Feiten tuning, when it has a zero fret...

  • @steverolfeca - I don't know how... but if my memory is correct, ALL MTD Basses have a zero fret and Buzz Feiten tuning.

  • Comment removed

  • @BassGuitarMag- Yes sir. They all have the zero fret, Buzz Feiten and asymmetrical necks. I believe they all (not the original Kingstons) now have quick release bridges also.

    Thanks for the review!

  • Didn't like the 5er, but that Saratoga sounds sweet!

  • Hi Ed! Can you do a review of the Warwick Thumb-SC? I'm really curious about it. :) Thanks and keep doing a great job!

  • @GardodoVersuso - I'm curious about it too.

  • Ed, Hello! I just stumbled on to your channel and have gone through just about all your vids. Great Stuff! I am also a bass builder. In fact I worked for Michael Tobias back in about '92. Great guy! Anyway just saying hello. Hope you'll be reviewing one of my basses one day ;-)

  • @bigvelvetdog - Thanks for saying hi.

  • Thanks, I will have a look see.

  • Hi Ed, any chance of reviewing some of the Overwater Basses? Very interest in this new Tanglewood range, especially the Aspiration Elite 5. Great Work as always, huge fan,

    Luke

  • @jimmyaka - I'm not familiar with these, but I'll take a look.

  • @BassGuitarMag Would love to see a Sandberg bass as well, German brand, very nice quality per dollar I hear, and mainly hand made. Their "california" models mimick the P- or J-bass from Fender. They are starting to get better and better known in the US too.

  • Hey Ed thanks for all your awesomeness. On you Steve Harris P-bass review you stuffed a piece if foam under the bridge. Where did you get it, I checked at all my local music stores, they all look at me like I'm crazy, I bought some weather striping, no luck. Thanks.

  • @macflapalicious - They don't sell it at music stores. I have some left over foam from some studio panels that I no longer use, but you can find that material at fabric store.

  • Do you know if you're gonna review Roger Waters Fender P-bass in the future?

  • I have tried a CRB today and I was really blown away on the overall quality of the instrument. The neck is extremely comfortable and the pickups sound really warm and beefy. It sounds like a big ol' P-Bass with 4-5 pounds less to carry around. I will get one for sure.

  • @rawk335 - Nope.

  • Hey Ed, big fan of the videos. I was just wondering, I need a bass with a nice jazz sound for my my college jazz band, the problem is the only basses I can actually think of that have a nice Jazz sound are fender jazz basses, but I'm not really a fan of fender basses. Are there any basses you can recommend for under $1000 that can give a nice jazz tone?

  • @damianwilson - You can play jazz on any bass... most of the tone comes from your hands learning to produce the sound you hear in your head. And so, you should try everything you can in your price range. I personally am a big fan of Fender basses, so that would be my suggestion.

  • Awesome product demo Mr. Friedland! That MTD Kingston bass must be worth it because it would cost my heart and kidney to get Michael Tobias to build me one custom. I wish you could promote some of the super cheaper basses too, like the Rogue ones made of cardboard. I bets you will make em sound awesomes.

  • @bmiranda2645 - Thanks, but cardboard? Yuck. No thanks. There are plenty of cheap woods out there like Agathis you can build with.

  • @bmiranda2645 lol dude they're not made out of cardboard. Particle board most likely.

  • @WalrusDoom I know, laugh out loud, but the head stocks on the Rogue LX200 are super thin though. I have a 1995 Rogue P Bass copy which I still play, but the LX200 head stock looks it could snap in half like sesame brittle.

  • Wow! This is one of the sub-600$ basses that i find really interesting, that CRB-5 is awesome, even though i'm not into 5-string basses, that was massive. and the Saratoga is really good also, best of both world.

    Keep on Bass-ing, Ed!

  • hey what does the zero fret do?

  • Something about the slap tone on the Jazz style bass is much more pleasant than a actual Jazz. I think that pickup movement was for the better.

  • 6:30 definitely: mine stayed closed in a gigbag plonked in a dark corner of my room for 3 years, a coil on the bridge rusted 'cause the gigbag was torn but it kept neckshape and even a reasonable tuning, they are extraordinary value for money!

  • Bit lacking on the bass fullness judging by this video

  • PPPPLEASE give us some reviews with basses that we can buy already! :)

  • the slap tone from the saratoga seems to sound very much like the Big Al but slightly edgier and raw.

  • Ed, you never disappoint!

  • Thanks....!

  • I really enjoyed this review, because its within a reasonable price range and i never thought I could find such quality at that price.

  • @Karmaneoeric imho you can find higher quality basses at that price

  • Hi Ed! What are the chances you'll review some cheap-ass SX bass? Nevermind, you'll make even a stringless pickaxe sound good, so it wouldn't be quite as reilable, lol

  • @shak956 Dude, SX basses are awesome! It's Rogue that sucks ass!

  • perfect combination - great review - great playing - great tone

    thank you Ed !

  • Good call on playing some licks without the drum machine! It could be a feature in every review, so we can compare the sounds with or without accompaniment...

Thanks a lot for the always good reviews!

  • Great sounding bass, and a great review as usual! =)

It's great to see you're pumping out quite a few more videos than usual this soon!

  • What is a zero fret for?

  • @Haydeosmith

To make open strings sound like fretted ones, so they dont stand out i figure. Since a fret does sound different to a nut it really makes sense.

  • @Haydeosmith to make the open string sound exactly like a fretted note

  • @shak956 "to make the open string sound exactly like a fretted note"

    How is that good?

  • @PowermadNavigator It gives you more note choice possibilities. Where on another bass you might not pick an open string in a groove because it doesn't sound as full as a fretted note, you might on this bass due to the zero fret giving that added quality to the open string.

  • @PowermadNavigator if you have a bad plastic nut (like my Eko MM300 bass, which is still a complete bang for the buck!), and -let's say- you have to play a riff in the E string that includes the open low E, the notes on the fret will sound "metallic" as it should be, and the open string note will sound more floppy, and with less sustain. That's why people put brass nuts on their basses. :D

  • @shak956

I've got a synthetic bone nut so i can't figure it out ;p

I'll need to try a bass with a zero fret when i find one... maybe that's why i didn't know the difference...

  • @PowermadNavigator I think that it's a very subtle difference... unless you have a cheap nut, of course.

  • @shak956

The nut's fine, but i forgot the manufacturer it was over a year ago...

There must be a difference if you listen carefully i can make out something on this video but i need to try a zero fret for myself and compare the sound and wave and all that ;p

  • @Haydeosmith it also reduces the production cost

  • Do my ears deceive me, but does the shift of the pups on the saratoga give the neck pup a bit more of a p sound? Great review as always. Great basses. Thank you.

  • Sauber

  • Ive been waiting for you to review mtds : D

  • nice I love my MTD KZ 5

  • You sir have convinced me to buy one of these. Thank you.

  • I've always wanted to try an instrument with the Buzz Feiten system. That CRB is a seriously impressive looking and sounding bass for the price. Thanks for the demo.

  • Delicious.

  • nice review... they seem very cool...

  • Beautiful basses!... good job as always Sir!
