I hope this grand dame of the English theatre has been somehow made aware that she has been the cause of millions of adolescent boys' erections. Thanks, ma'am.
Everyone seems to enjoy slamming Tara King (Linda Thorson). Diana Rigg left the series because she wanted to move on to other things---just as Honor Blackman (who had played Cathy Gale) did before her. Ms Blackman, you'll recall, went on to play Pussy Galore in Goldfinger (in the episode TOO MANY CHRISTMAS TREES there is a reference to this). Ms Rigg was TIRED of doing THE AVENGERS...deal with it and don't blame Ms Thorson for it.
dinia rig was class elgance talent thhrough and through no if but,s or maybes about it. Would love to see some of today,s tv start,s female try to be her equel. About like a slice of swiss chesse hold,s water. Same with patrick he to was class talent elgance through and through. What a beautiful couple they were on the show.
One of my male buddies actually admitted to me that he preferred Tara King to Mrs. Peel. What a betrayal!!! Three years later I am still mad, and almost forty years later I hate that little tart in the crushed velvet mod hat. You never know your friends, do you?
There's a business in Orlando, Florida that uses the theme song of the Avengers as background music for their radio add. Every time I'd hear the commercial I'd get frustrated because I would be familiar with the song but couldn't remember where it was from. I'm serious.. I'd go crazy. Finally, I found out. Hey..it's been well over 35 years I've heard it before the radio add!
Those two - Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg - are still alive and kicking, but only at least as far as I know. I hardly follow the news at all nowadays. But I know that they lived on well into the new millenium. The vast majority of the guest stars on their Avengers programs have long since 'clocked out'.
The Avengers looks sooo amazing. I am pumped for next summer!! The Dark Knight Rises as well. Hey speaking of The BATMAN if you enjoy a little Harvey Dent "Two-Face" then come and check out my page for some raw shit. 5 minutes worth. It aint half bad.
Originally, John Steed, played by Patrick McNee, had a male partner, played by co-star, Ian Henry. From Goldfinger, Honor Blackman played the second partner, but it was Dianna Rigg, who played Emma Peel, who was the best partner. She had class and dignity in the role of Emma Peel. They had a fourth replacement, names Linda Thorsen, who wasn't as interesting. The movie version, with Uma Thurman and Jude Law, was not as good. It tried to capture the magic of the series but if failed miserably.
cant get over these great shows and what do we get nowadays...simon (fukin) cowell shite all yr round. glad i stopped paying for a tv license. tv is shit nowadays
Diana Rigg was super hot in the early seventies movie 'A Bucket Of Blood' with Vincent Price. She traded in her catsuit for a mini-skirt and go-go boots. And what made her one of the most beautiful women of all time was not just her physical features but also her aura of class and sophistication and not sluttiness.
@a1orski The only woman ever to win James Bond's heart. The way the fictional world lined up was quite meta. Emma Peel and 007. The only other comparison I can think of was Patrick McGoohan's DANGER MAN being sent on the mission in the film ICE STATION ZEBRA. Then after he quits MI6 they send him to the village because he knows too much.
Our next door neighbour Syd (now deceased) created this show. Who'da thought, a poor Jewish kid from Toronto, would go on to such heights at the Beeb? He did "Dr. Who" and "The Forsyte Saga" too. He was grumpy, but sooo talented.
I was eight years old when I saw this show. I've been an anglophile ever since. Fell in love with Emma Peel and thought Steed was so cool. Plus he was a snappy dresser. Always wanted to wear those suits and bowler.
Oops, I meant Dame Diana Rigg. She's a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) - 1988 and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) -1994.
@arweiss100 What empire? Wasn't the British Empire dismantled in the early 1960s. Some remnants remain here and there, but it's not much of an empire any more.
@MowgliX It was dismantled in more like 1939. A lot of odds and ends of it were given to the Americans to help pay off our war debt to them. Those awards are just very old awards that is all, a bit quirky and fun they are also given out to foreigners who keep quiet about it in their own country (dont want to be associated with an empire and all that ) - I think Bill Gates has been awarded one?
Lady Diana Rigg, she's received the female equivalent of a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth. Also she's received a Tony Award for her portrayal of "Medea" on "Broadway" and an Emmy for the TV comedy "Diana" that used to be on NBC. Love everything she does. Check her out as Vincent Price's quirky daughter in Theater Of Blood" a camp horror flick & "The Assasination Bureau with Oliver Reed. Gorgoeous, classically trained actress, versatile can do TV, film, theater, comedy, drama. musicals too!,
@lincsposter Thanks. Someone else thought that ! I did get one video with some episodes on. But only one sort of got near, it had in the story/ cast Dame Edith Evans but was not it. That led me to watch a film - with her in Queen Of Spades, a great film but again... not it!
His first Avenging partner was a man!!....... Dr David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, who was avenging the death of his wife, at the hands of some gangsters
This needs to come back.. but ONLY on BBC Channels. I don't remember much of this show (cause it's older than I am, but my mom knows a bit) I only know about this through the movie with Uma Thurman and Ralph Finnes
Diana Rigg was definitely a beauty. Good actress, too. The leather outfit is great ; "Austin Powers" and Mimi Rogers giving a nod to Peel and her leather is outstanding.
Laurie Johnson wrote a great theme here ; terrific orchestration with the strings, brass and rhythmic stuff going on. Has such a "British - ABC-TV - 1960's" feel to it that no longer is being done. Same kind of ambiance as the "That Girl" theme had. I'd bet that Johnson wrote ( or orchestrated ) that one as well.
One of THE great Main Title sequences. For an excellent essay on the composer of this awesome theme, Laurie Johnson, along with everything else one could possibly want to know about the entire run of the series - and more - search for "Avengers T.V." and select "Welcome to The Avengers Forever! - Avengers TV, The" - then scan down and select "The Music." Be prepared to spend a while at the site...
MEOWW, PURRRRRR, Oh pleeease take me captive Mrs. Peel, and I do want to see what happens when all that delicious leather gets wet! Yowza!... I just loved this show back in the day and couldn't wait until the next episode! Long live the Avengers!
England and the BBC had The Saint, The Avengers and Dangerman. We in the US got Batman, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Lost in Space. We got seriously Gypped as far as good programs went! Well, it wasn't a total wash though,at least we got Mission:Impossible!.
@thevampirefrog06 Have You seen the first season of those? Man from uncle actually tried to be a good show, same with Lost In Space, even batman wasn't totally campy at first, but once Batman!(An old fave of mine as well!) went over the top, all interest in serious writing in other shows went as well, Most shows just turned into forgettable pop crap, which is why mane are hardly seen anymore. It's really a shame,as Man could have been better if the producers had tried.
@Oldbmwr100rs So they changed in tone, so what? I don't know about you, but I can enjoy the campy as much as the serious. And really, the BBC was immune to it either. The Avengers had gotten pretty ridiculous by '68, what with all the shrinking machines and themed villains.
There were a lot of repeats of the b&w Avengers not too long ago and they all still work amazingly well...stylish,witty and watchable.Having Diana Rigg didn't hurt either.
Believe it or not I remember all these wonderful 50-60's shows, not just the Avengers, but The Lone Ranger, The Prisoner, Star Trek, Roy Rogers etc. Brings make many memories.
Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg did a great job, while acting the avengers! ^__^ I found they were the best team :D (And the producer has the same first name like me^^)
Yes well....we're all showing our ages aren't we??? Never forget the episode where whicheve corridor Emma Peel travelled down, she always ended up in the same place with this circular bin shaped contraption. Aaah nostalgia!
A lot of the episodes don`t really stand up to well today, but that`s not the point. It`s the sheer joy one get`s watching re-run`s of a programme, that`s full of charm, humour and style. Oh,....and Diana Rigg, her personality, beauty and her grace just shone out through the screen. No wonder it broke MacNee`s heart when she quit the show.
The plots were always all over my head. Could never figure them out, but still a very enjoyable series. Must be a British thing, like they're all off on Gallia or something.
This program had many things going for it. The plots were unusual, and fun. Diana Rigg was every man's dream woman, and the theme is one of the most famous in TV history. It was one of the shows that "defined" the 1960s.
Tell you this, The Avengers was the best television show and with that British elegant style that I liked very well, kudos to Patrick and Diana they were fab.
Diana Rigg was almost too much. By the way, I think the producers were afraid to put Linda Thorson, the bounteously endowed Steed girl who followed her on the series, into the leather catsuit because her physique in that get-up would've driven too many people nuts in various ways.
I remember one scene where Mrs. Peel was tied on her back on a conveyor belt, headed for a buzz saw. She would be rescued at the last second of course, but she didn't know that. As she was going, she said out loud, "I have a feeling I'll be feeling it." Her total fearlessness added to her sexiness.
I loved this show when I was a kid, looked forward to it every Friday night. They were thr Muldor and Scully of the 60's. Thoroughly professional, always acted like they had zero interest in each other. But the audience wanted them together.
I loved the writing for this show. The plots were usually really good. I think the season with black and white episodes with Diana Rigg was my favorite season.
@MowgliX Absolutely! Tracy Bond from "On Her Majesty's Sexret Service". Best bond..woman! ever! Loved her as Mrs. Peel in her catsuit. First lady of martial arts & cool espionage secret agents. Classy, sexy, intelligent, sophisticated, bada**, beautiful, all while saving the world from bad guys & villains. Incredible!
Is it my imagination or the theme songs of TV series of decades past were so iconic that even if you were not near the television set and the music started to play, you knew which show was on. My point is: even the television theme songs were too good in the past !
I want this to come back on tv :P

Looking for the name of a TV programme or possibly a film where a wedding dress features.
I have tried to find out what this scene was for over 30 years. A wedding dress in a tall glass case in a corner of a Victorian
old ladies room, she is sitting on a sofa and warns a young girl who is admiring the wedding dress, not to open the case .
But the girl does behind the old lady, and when the air gets inside the dress falls to pieces..

Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg did a great job, while acting the avengers! ^__^ I found they were the best team :D (And the producer has the same first name like me^^)

This music is heaven, and as a kid Mrs. Peel was my big crush, lol. Loved Diana Rigg.

Diana Rigg as Emma Peel: SSS = Smart, Sophisticated and Sexy!
UWMutt 11 months ago
Always rated The Avengers far more than The New Avengers. Steed seemed to have less to do and the stories lacked the charm of the sixties series.

I'm a gay man, but Diana Rigg was hot! And of all the changes The Avengers' theme song went through, this one is the best.

@wtc175 Yes I think it was 'The House that Jack Built' Certain elements of it were used in the File 'Cube'

@ewaf88 Thanks! The name certainly rings a bell.
wtc175 1 year ago
@ewaf88 In 'The House that Jack Built', the central 'console' concept was taken from Doctor Who's original TARDIS.

Why is it quirky?

Loved that show.
One of my all time favorite TV theme songs.
And Mrs. Peel. ROWL.

My point is: even the television theme songs were too good in the past !
eurodishco 1 year ago
Shows like this are lost to the ages since TV Land and other networks stopped showing older shows.
