Spankings are not designed to physically hurt. They are designed to hurt a kids pride, so much so that they dont do whatever it was that got them a spanking. As a student still in secondary school (that's early high school for you Yanks), many of my classmates have a lack of respect for teachers, and teachers have no authority and are heavily restricted by human rights. As a person who had an undiagnosed learning disability, I'm so glad Wisconsin banned corporal punishment before I started. I wasn't a wild child, but "ditzy", "underachieving" and "spacey". It was punishment enough to listen to "gifted and talented" students talk on about all the fun experiments they did, while I sat and tried for the 50th time to get productively through yet another boring reading session.

Let's not exaggerate the definition of abuse. We are gettting too soft and melodramatic as a nation. Responsible parents don't do this kind of stuff. Proper spankings send a sharp, clear message and help a child pay a price for their misbehavior.
I agree that THIS is child abuse, but I have to say that some kids needs a little spanking sometimes, but only if no other punishments has worked and only if it is connected with discipline. Ex: If I wouldn't get a daily spanking then who knows what I could do?

From what I've seen and heard, kids has a lot more respect a few decades ago, and teachers had authority, but now, kids have far to many rights that they wield against teachers. I was paddled in high school in Texas back in 86. It was no big deal. My wife used to substitute teach and she said that the students do anything they want now with no fear of punishment. I think it is the mix of an "out of control" legal system and lack of corporal punishment. There are other ways of doing it too. We used to have to do exercises until it hurt too much. I think it should be brought back. Isolated in school suspension is good too. We had to go to tiny little rooms for days.
I live in the UK and corporal punishment was abolished in the 1980's as they said it would "reduce the amount of violence in schools and improve respect the children had for teachers". Now we have a situation where attacks (physical and verbal) are common place. The teachers have no way of administering discipline as any contact with the child results in disciplinary proceedings or legal action.

I grew up in Texas and was whopped for shooting dice in the gym. I didn't shoot dice at school again. It left a mark but it didn't scar me emotionally. In part, because I knew I broke the rules and deserved the punishment. Just like when someone breaks the law, they go to jail. People who think that just sending a kid home from school is punishment are naive. They'll get into trouble just to get out of class.

As a student still in secondary school (that's early high school for you Yanks), many of my classmates have a lack of respect for teachers, and teachers have no authority and are heavily restricted by human rights. As a person who had an undiagnosed learning disability, I'm so glad Wisconsin banned corporal punishment before I started. I wasn't a wild child, but "ditzy", "underachieving" and "spacey". It was punishment enough to listen to "gifted and talented" students talk on about all the fun experiments they did, while I sat and tried for the 50th time to get productively through yet another boring reading session.

I was paddled in high school in Texas back in 86. It was no big deal. My wife used to substitute teach and she said that the students do anything they want now with no fear of punishment. I think it is the mix of an "out of control" legal system and lack of corporal punishment. There are other ways of doing it too. We used to have to do exercises until it hurt too much. I think it should be brought back. Isolated in school suspension is good too. We had to go to tiny little rooms for days.

I live in the UK and corporal punishment was abolished in the 1980's as they said it would "reduce the amount of violence in schools and improve respect the children had for teachers". Now we have a situation where attacks (physical and verbal) are common place. The teachers have no way of administering discipline as any contact with the child results in disciplinary proceedings or legal action.
Bring back the cane for the sake of everyone!!

I grew up in Texas and was whopped for shooting dice in the gym. I didn't shoot dice at school again. It left a mark but it didn't scar me emotionally. In part, because I knew I broke the rules and deserved the punishment. Just like when someone breaks the law, they go to jail. People who think that just sending a kid home from school is punishment are naive. They'll get into trouble just to get out of class.

The reason why bosses don't use corporal punishment is because employees are getting paid for their work, they'd just fire people who don't do their job. If a kid, who isn't getting paid for school work, doesn't do his work, firing the kid from school won't motivate him to do work elsewhere. Check out Terry Tate, the office linebacker.

If he has a problem with an individiual states legislation he can stop it. Besides, border control IS a federal responsability. @bentonreynolds I can't tell you how many times I have heard of people dying from the tazer.For example, at an airport, a Polish immigrant died after cops tazed him. He wasn't even doing any thing wrong, he was just panicking because he spoke no English. No one was hurt, but the pigs tazed him anyways. Imagine how it would feel if you were his mother, and you came to pick up your beloved son whom you hadn't seen from years, only to learn that he had died? You have no empathy whatsoever.
