Great, fun song! Everyone in our band at the time was still in high school when this came out. Our lead player had just bought the new "Wah-Wah" effects pedal. We learned this song and he went nuts with the wah-wah effect. what a blast. thanks for posting this song.
black dog sounds great on the old silvertone run through my peavey 210 delta blues amp. sounds great on slide work too....ahla jimmy page and his double horn dan.
I think mcguinn still uses the 370 but he says the janglebox comes closer to the compressors the studio had back in the day. so now he uses it. it was a ringing endorsement for janglebox all the way coming from him....and yes he said he didn't use the onboard comp. of his rick anymore. and my first electric axe was the sears silvertone double pickup guitar amp in case! my mother worked at sears and got it for my christmas present 1966.it was that red maroon sunburst one! its still around!
I understand your position on this song and respect it. this all began as an observation nash left the hollies because this was not where he wanted to be in his career.I'm still certin thats true! I never played one of those vox teardrops do they play well? howabout tone? @redmail02 crosby, stills nash, and young's, first gig was woodstock.......august 1969. @TheBabyboomkidof53 Yes,unfortunately, this song is one of the reasons why he was ready to leave the Hollies. The tune is cute and poppy, but he was ready to move on to the next level music wise.
@citybeat60 yes, this is one of those pre-teen bubblegum hits that a serious muscian would have conflict with. it may be a commercial hit and make money, but you cant be proud and hold your head up as you walk down the street. plus you cant be taken seriously by others with this kind of output. it may well have been the final reason to go with crosby, stills, and young.

Over/Under by Yardbirds? Acker Bilk? Re: Brit pop in '66 if they were ON TOP and SOLD RECORDS then they made their mark and can always hold their heads high as pretty much nobody else on earth will ever know the feeling of being there in an age when they were vanguards- timeless wasn't a priority, but memories are
@cuda426hemi I'm 58 years young. and this was 1968 not 1966 as you keep referencing. this was a hit in the u.k. I know, but it layed flat here in the states which may be from where some this rabid defence of the song is coming from. I loved the hollies it is only this song I have issues with. I think it wasn't where gram nash, wanted to be at this point of his career and helped him understand he and the hollies were on differing paths.it may have helped him go with crosby, stills, and young.adult
@cuda426hemi now I'm wondering if your a young'un....everything was serious in 1968 vietnam, nixon, democartic national convention, the chicogo 8, SDS, race riots, martin luthern king and bobby kennedy assinations.....where were you?????? if you were listening to AM pop you may have missed it all.
Are we talking about Music or about The Times? Seems you are moving the goal posts here. '68 as a year in general was probably the worst of times I agree; but what does that have to do with music? Beatles White Album came out in '68 - the "whole world" was listening to it that week it came out... now we all know how 'serious' the Beatles are, right? Or are you going to dismiss them to because of Don't Pass Me By, or Why Don't We Do It In The Road, or Ob-La-Di-...??
@cuda426hemi when did I dismiss the hollies? I just said this song isn't worthy of their abilities and I think gram nash agreed. your the one speaking gibrish about 1966 and all, If you'd use some better sentence structure I may can communicate with you better. in your first communication it was you who asked "what was serious in 1966(wrong year for this song, it was 68.) I know your making a point but I'm lost in your execution.
"@TheBabyboomkidof53 when did I dismiss the hollies? I just said this song isn't worthy of their abilities and I think gram nash agreed." - Story I heard (that you won't get on Wiki) is that Nash met the Laurel Cyn gang & Malibu bunch and fell into heavy LSD use. Nash was quoted as saying he tripped every day (!) Yeah, I'd say he didn't want to keep singing Jennifer Eccles or Stop,Stop,Stop or any of that pop pap. Fine It wasn't a single song - Hollies did a lot of "lite" songs -time 2go f.G
@cuda426hemi what I heard was he met crosby and stills at cass elliots house. they were looking for a high voice to sail above their own and cass thought of gram and conntacted him as the hollies were touring the u.s. at that time. everything "clicked" between them as they sang first time there in her house. as for pink floyd they never were my cup of tea, but I loved dark side of the moon. so I would'nt know syd barrett by name. they weren't a real factor till that album in the states, 1973.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 The guy who mentioned Barrett presumably was referencing the same kind of pop 'lite' that you don't like - See Emily Play, and Bike are hard to take 43 years later as maybe Eccles is. But I'm wary when people equate a style to "respect" and holding heads high. I personally don't like Sampling and Rap, but I give those boys props big time for "doin' it big-time" in an age when ANY success in the so called "business" of music is pretty hard to come by. peace
@cuda426hemi I may sound totally anti AM pop which I'm not. I think simple little tunes like I love you do you love me type stuff is fine as long as it isn't "too sweet" . thats the problem with this song to me.it's like the group the archies and their hit sugar sugar. first off it wasn't a group. it was a studio band. singing this annoying drone of a song which is so sweet you want to puke. I dont know how to "respect" that. dont know why I should.cant disagree more on rap.no respect from here
@TheBabyboomkidof53 as for pink floyd they never were my cup of tea, but I loved dark side of the moon. so I would'nt know syd barrett by name. they weren't a real factor till that album in the states, 1973.
Factor? You mean sell-out? By the time DS came out Floyd had had a steady stream of strong US sales with UmmaGumma/Atom HeartMother/Meddle etc. all very non AM friendly LPs - and then AbbeyRoad recorded poppy DS comes out. Talk about respect-biggest success so far and Waters RESENTED IT!
@cuda426hemi yeah a buddy mine had bought umma gumma, and we smoked some dope and gave it a listen at his place - 1969 thereabouts....it tripped us out abit at the time but hearing it now is no big thing. at the time it was somewhat intresting however. but I never listened to it agian till decades later.so as I said they didn't impact me much at all. by the time DS came out I was 21 and already not much intrested in new groups and their music....I like what I grew up with mostly, and the blues.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 Listen, I was taught to respect my elders and as such - I am 57, I will back off. Yummy Yummy Yummy and Sweet Pea finally wasn't why I took up guitar at 10...the Beatles were, and they initially put out a lot of "sugar" but as (ultimately) a musician even at 10 I listened beyond inane lyrics to hooks and riffs and key changes that were interesting. I love Look Through Any Window(hollies) and Little Children (Billy J. Kramer) only years later did I "hear" the pervo lyrics
@cuda426hemi did you ever watch WKRP IN CINCINNATTI? remember johnny fever the DJ?there was this episode where the management wanted him to incorperate barry mannalow, tunes into his program. so he puts the album on the turntable and starts becoming sick hearing it.he takes the needle arm and rakes it all across the record on air and says: "oops....it got scratched, cant play that anymore." and he takes it off the turntable and shatters it on the desk.then puts on the stones.LOL. thats me!
@cuda426hemi I took up guitar in 1965 because of walk dont run by the ventures, and pipeline by the chantays, as well as the beatles. I love look through any window by the hollies, one of my favorite guitar intros to a song ever! along with the searchers every time you walk in the room.I like little children by billy j kramer too, but I dont have those songs in the same catogory as eccles.eccles is to too sweet!!! its cutie pie stuff!!
@TheBabyboomkidof53 You must be only a few months older as I was born in '53 as well. I still have a teardrop shaped 12 string from '66 that was bought inspired by Tony Hicks "Window" opening lick (as well as Brian Jones Vox guitar). Eccles is too lite for me but I defend it's right to be there with the other flavors of the 60's - scads of young brit birds dug the song, and we wouldn't want to bite the hand(s) that feed us...S'cuse me, I have to finish spinning PicturesOfMatchstickMen lol
@cuda426hemi also dont neglect the danelectro 12. has a very nice bright ring that sustains well. considering it' costs only fractions of the others it's a good choice. their supose to be doing a run of them agian this year and I intend to get one. the last run about 7 years ago were all sparkle paint jobs I dont like. hope they dont do it agian. also the jangelbox is the best stompbox to to give you the byrds sound. mcguinn even stopped using his own 370 rick 12 issue to play the box.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 Oddly, my Pop was a designer at Sears in the 50's to '60. I could've had my pick of the Masonite monsters with the lipstick p/u and l'il amp in the case. Of course I wanted a Rickenbacker after '64 - ha ha - sure kid, but after some crappy stuff became a Gibson SG w/Bigsby dude. Now, of course I WISH I had ANY of the funky Danelectro/Sears - Harmony/Kay axes that you could buy from the catalog but no -"No Dad, I don't want that future BlackMountainSide p.o.s. ..." just nice
@TheBabyboomkidof53 7 years ago were all sparkle paint jobs I dont like. hope they dont do it agian. also the jangelbox is the best stompbox to to give you the byrds sound. mcguinn even stopped
So I won't see a pic of you fronting a red or blue sparkle Kustom rig? I "ate" my rick 360-12 a couple years ago - and I'm still sick about it. You mean Roger ditched the on-board comp.right? He just favors the stomp comp but uses same axe. I'm researching comps in Vintage G where I 1st saw janglebx ad
@salvadory "if this is a song any serious musician would be proud of why has no one recorded it since that time????? " So '68 instead of '66-big deal. Your above statement is what I am talking about - clear now???
You seriously can't be serious. And you don't even know founding member of Pink Floyd-Syd Barrett?? See Emily Play? No wonder you don't understand the comments here. You don't like the song-fine. Keep it to that. You aren't a musician so you wouldn't understand success is success.
@cuda426hemi you are replying to the wrong person here- im not the one who said that- its babyboomkid- make sure you get youre targets right next time- ps im a huge syd barrett fan
@salvadory It's all good. I was trying to quote Babyboomer's response to you - I was NOT responding or attacking you. Sorry about the confusion. I am the defender of ALL music regardless of subjectivity - music is one of the great mysteries in the universe. Syd was the shit. I saw Floyd twice before Dark Side, and twice after - I saw the Wall @ Sports Arena in L.A. - not many people saw the original lineup do the Wall. Take Care Sal
This was one of the last Hollies songs with Graham Nash in the group. He would leave later in the year to team up with David Crosby & Stephen Stills, and with Neil Young the following year.
@billdescoteaux Tell me about it me & friend had good seats fillmore east months in advance (crush on Nash) fillmore replaced them with Turtles, before concert, hanging out in east village (all decked out) dude comes up and says "you look like 2 groovy chicks would you like to dance at end of Turtles show " (thinking this ass was trying to pick us up ) in line he's at door and says "you missed your big chance too meet the band"(weeks later fillmore mailing for C.S.Nash. we got front row seats
I must have been 14, listened to these guys, the beatles and a little later discovered The Grateful Dead....what a beginning .......to the late 60's and thrown into the 70's...
To hell with disco and c-rap and hip hop......long live British music.......I am an American and see our youth trapped by these black thug so called musicians...they are poison...Long live morrisey. cure, chameloens, hollies, roses, las, furs, charlatans, ride,Who,clsah, wedding pres, the list just goes on and on....too bad so many have missed it
My name is Jennifer Echols!!!!! The spelling of my last name is different but it's clearly pronounced the same!!! This is going to be my theme song now :-D
@Ladyjakablackmartha Wow. Isn't this just a blessing? It's almost like it's your birthday again, huh? The song belies a beautiful spirit. Try to hold onto it through a whole day. Then tell us what that day was like. This is a win for you!
@Ladyjakablackmartha It just maybe, jennifer echols, that these boys spelt your surname wrong on their board, and it really SHOULD have read jennifer ECHOLS.
I used to sing this song, walking home from school almost every single day! yesterday, just for fun, I wrote the words:
"White chalk written on red brick, our love told in a heart." on the information board as work just to see what would happen. ONE person, coming in for first shift, came out to the floor, singing Jennifer Eccles. My job was done....I had reminded one other person of a great song.
@Aibajunno That is so very cool. I remember this song as i had an older sister who used to listen to all these great oldies. I was 9 years old and love this song even today!
68 was a fantastic year for me. jennifer was a song i don't remember. hollies i remember well. oh well. guys my age are not known for being sharp with memory details (yeah, right)
@pigsrings The great Graham Nash gained a new appreciation for this song, which he didn't appreciate when he himself sang it, thanks to E's version. See the tribute album, 'Sing Hollies in Reverse'.
1968 was a good year,i was born and hail from the same place as the hollies,,i luv em and cant get enough of them having been brought up listening to the 60's.. my honour listening to them all xx
OMG! I have to OWN this song! I Love it! First day hearing this and Dang I am not the same!!! So rad!!! I love the video and the tune and the Harmonies! I LOVE this band! Wow! I think I Just found my second favorite Hollies tune!
This always reminds me of the 1995 film "Now and Then" when the boys ride down the neighborhood on their bikes. It makes me want to live in 1970 so badly!
I was singing this song while working in a haunted house last autumn to get me in the mood to scare the p--- out of people. Made me laugh. Crazy, maniacal laughter, yes, but it worked so I went with it. I'm sick, I know.
@mcparty1 I not sure how this song relates to being in a haunted house--but be carefull, mcparty because sometimes its just a simple haunting--sometimes its not. But, I'm not psyhic, so I wouldn't worry. But--just to pass it on to my fellow man.....
that they could get away with this kind of sh!t in 1968 when most any other group was out of the bubble gum pop is amazing... now that's real commitment boys! :))
@tomthefunky The Hollies had released "King Midas In Reverse" just before this which was quite different in style and sound. However this was a failure as a single so they decided to release a 'silly' song as a follow up hence "Jennifer Eccles" was made. If I have got it correct Jennifer was the name of Allan Clarke's wife and Eccles was the maiden name of Graham Nash's wife.
Great band with many hits. Other great bands/artists of that time besides the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were Hermans Hermits, Freddy and The Dreamers, Lulu, Cilla Black - lots more. I was there!!!
what is the background to this song? I used google to find out something. There was a pornstar girl named Jennifer Eccles. They wrote a song about a pornstar, or it is a confusion?
@ericleistner Jennifer Eccles was a combination of Allan Clarke's wife's name, Jennifer, and Graham Nash's wife at the time maiden name Eccles. I hope that clears that up for you.
I didn't even know The Hollies did this song. I haven't heard this song in 35 years. Wow, what a classic song and video. It's great that The Hollies are being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When is this happening?
@SteveCarras They are not playing their instruments so as to not foul the camera whilst filming the video. Common practice in the early years of music video's.
i saw the beatles when they backed helen shapiro on tour, i saw the stones, billy j kramer, gerry, freddie etc, but the best two live bands i ever saw were the hollies and the searchers.
having said that, you can't take nothing away from the beatles and their contribution to music.
It is hard to believe that the Hollies are only now getting into the R&R hall of fame. Talk about correcting a glaring omission. Terry and Graham both deserve to be there. I hope that Terry doesn't get squeezed out. Nash has already been recognized with CSN.
Alan sure looked a lot cooler before those Brutal perms.

Re: Brit pop in '66 if they were ON TOP and SOLD RECORDS then they made their mark and can always hold their heads high as pretty much nobody else on earth will ever know the feeling of being there in an age when they were vanguards- timeless wasn't a priority, but memories are
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi I'm 58 years young. and this was 1968 not 1966 as you keep referencing. this was a hit in the u.k. I know, but it layed flat here in the states which may be from where some this rabid defence of the song is coming from. I loved the hollies it is only this song I have issues with. I think it wasn't where gram nash, wanted to be at this point of his career and helped him understand he and the hollies were on differing paths.it may have helped him go with crosby, stills, and young.adult
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi now I'm wondering if your a young'un....everything was serious in 1968 vietnam, nixon, democartic national convention, the chicogo 8, SDS, race riots, martin luthern king and bobby kennedy assinations.....where were you?????? if you were listening to AM pop you may have missed it all.
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@TheBabyboomkidof53
Or are you going to dismiss them to because of Don't Pass Me By, or Why Don't We Do It In The Road, or Ob-La-Di-...??
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi when did I dismiss the hollies? I just said this song isn't worthy of their abilities and I think gram nash agreed. your the one speaking gibrish about 1966 and all, If you'd use some better sentence structure I may can communicate with you better. in your first communication it was you who asked "what was serious in 1966(wrong year for this song, it was 68.) I know your making a point but I'm lost in your execution.
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
"@TheBabyboomkidof53 when did I dismiss the hollies? I just said this song isn't worthy of their abilities and I think gram nash agreed." - Story I heard (that you won't get on Wiki) is that Nash met the Laurel Cyn gang & Malibu bunch and fell into heavy LSD use. Nash was quoted as saying he tripped every day (!) Yeah, I'd say he didn't want to keep singing Jennifer Eccles or Stop,Stop,Stop or any of that pop pap. Fine It wasn't a single song - Hollies did a lot of "lite" songs -time 2go f.G
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi what I heard was he met crosby and stills at cass elliots house. they were looking for a high voice to sail above their own and cass thought of gram and conntacted him as the hollies were touring the u.s. at that time. everything "clicked" between them as they sang first time there in her house. as for pink floyd they never were my cup of tea, but I loved dark side of the moon. so I would'nt know syd barrett by name. they weren't a real factor till that album in the states, 1973.
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@TheBabyboomkidof53 The guy who mentioned Barrett presumably was referencing the same kind of pop 'lite' that you don't like - See Emily Play, and Bike are hard to take 43 years later as maybe Eccles is. But I'm wary when people equate a style to "respect" and holding heads high. I personally don't like Sampling and Rap, but I give those boys props big time for "doin' it big-time" in an age when ANY success in the so called "business" of music is pretty hard to come by. peace
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi I may sound totally anti AM pop which I'm not. I think simple little tunes like I love you do you love me type stuff is fine as long as it isn't "too sweet" . thats the problem with this song to me.it's like the group the archies and their hit sugar sugar. first off it wasn't a group. it was a studio band. singing this annoying drone of a song which is so sweet you want to puke. I dont know how to "respect" that. dont know why I should.cant disagree more on rap.no respect from here
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@TheBabyboomkidof53 as for pink floyd they never were my cup of tea, but I loved dark side of the moon. so I would'nt know syd barrett by name. they weren't a real factor till that album in the states, 1973.
Factor? You mean sell-out? By the time DS came out Floyd had had a steady stream of strong US sales with UmmaGumma/Atom HeartMother/Meddle etc. all very non AM friendly LPs - and then AbbeyRoad recorded poppy DS comes out. Talk about respect-biggest success so far and Waters RESENTED IT!
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi yeah a buddy mine had bought umma gumma, and we smoked some dope and gave it a listen at his place - 1969 thereabouts....it tripped us out abit at the time but hearing it now is no big thing. at the time it was somewhat intresting however. but I never listened to it agian till decades later.so as I said they didn't impact me much at all. by the time DS came out I was 21 and already not much intrested in new groups and their music....I like what I grew up with mostly, and the blues.
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@TheBabyboomkidof53 Listen, I was taught to respect my elders and as such - I am 57, I will back off. Yummy Yummy Yummy and Sweet Pea finally wasn't why I took up guitar at 10...the Beatles were, and they initially put out a lot of "sugar" but as (ultimately) a musician even at 10 I listened beyond inane lyrics to hooks and riffs and key changes that were interesting. I love Look Through Any Window(hollies) and Little Children (Billy J. Kramer) only years later did I "hear" the pervo lyrics
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi did you ever watch WKRP IN CINCINNATTI? remember johnny fever the DJ?there was this episode where the management wanted him to incorperate barry mannalow, tunes into his program. so he puts the album on the turntable and starts becoming sick hearing it.he takes the needle arm and rakes it all across the record on air and says: "oops....it got scratched, cant play that anymore." and he takes it off the turntable and shatters it on the desk.then puts on the stones.LOL. thats me!
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi I took up guitar in 1965 because of walk dont run by the ventures, and pipeline by the chantays, as well as the beatles. I love look through any window by the hollies, one of my favorite guitar intros to a song ever! along with the searchers every time you walk in the room.I like little children by billy j kramer too, but I dont have those songs in the same catogory as eccles.eccles is to too sweet!!! its cutie pie stuff!!
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago
@TheBabyboomkidof53 You must be only a few months older as I was born in '53 as well. I still have a teardrop shaped 12 string from '66 that was bought inspired by Tony Hicks "Window" opening lick (as well as Brian Jones Vox guitar). Eccles is too lite for me but I defend it's right to be there with the other flavors of the 60's - scads of young brit birds dug the song, and we wouldn't want to bite the hand(s) that feed us...S'cuse me, I have to finish spinning PicturesOfMatchstickMen lol
cuda426hemi 7 months ago
@cuda426hemi also dont neglect the danelectro 12. has a very nice bright ring that sustains well. considering it' costs only fractions of the others it's a good choice. their supose to be doing a run of them agian this year and I intend to get one. the last run about 7 years ago were all sparkle paint jobs I dont like. hope they dont do it agian. also the jangelbox is the best stompbox to to give you the byrds sound. mcguinn even stopped using his own 370 rick 12 issue to play the box.
TheBabyboomkidof53 7 months ago

The rest, they say, is history.
