Could there be a problem with the power supply? Because I just did the whole process of dissassembly and reflowing and still no success. I'm sorry, I know this is just a prevention vid, but I really want to get my PS3 working again.
this actually frightens me, I don't wwanna open mine ( a slim one) and I just wanted to put an arctic thermal paste in it...but you have to tear the whole console apart to do it...sheesh, couldn't they do it like a pc, you unscrew 4 screws on the cooler and bam, there's the processor.
@Modiesel1286 Torx size 10. It has a security nub in the middle, but we only see 10% that need a Security Torx driver to remove it. Bring the PS3 with you to the hardware store to be sure that you get the right driver.
@VECTIZ Next time try paying attention to the part where I EXPLICITLY TELL YOU NOT TO REMOVE THE RIBBON FROM THE MOTHERBOARD so you don't damage the clip. You're welcome.
I read online that performing this task if your system is not ps2 backward compatible is touch because of the heat sinks not being were they should. Is this true?
Thanks for the up load it helped out so much. i got the 160 gb ps3, inside was kind of different it scared me for a bit but i did it. in 4 months will be 3 years so i had to open it. never had a problem with it but it was a good thing i did cause the paste was sooo dry, i replace it and cleaned it too. but after replacing the paste how long do you let it dry before you can turn on the ps3? i'm planning to do this every 2-3 years now.
Will removing my upgraded 400 GB Hard drive for the thermal compound replacement and then putting it back in the system force me to format it and delete it's components?
@FullBloodedM No. The system should restart normally after you reassemble it. Be sure to plug the battery back in, if you disconnected it. But you should always MAKE A BACKUP of important data BEFORE system disassembly.... to be safe.
@fixmyplaystation how do you know if you are going to get the YLOD? My Ps3 Is making a lot of noise and it does crash sometimes. its in small place and cobwebs and dust do get onto my PS3! Please can you help me.
@fixmyplaystation so basically the YLOD is common? i have had my PS3 for 2 years, and i have never had any problems with it so its quite sad if it breaks now.
I noticed you respond to reviews so, I'd like to ask... I'm doing the yellow light fix... Which requires a heat gun. Does this work? And also, can I use a hair dryer instead?
fixmyplaystation...... My PS3 just got the yellow light of death!! Will this help me if I want to save my hard drive (game saves and all) and do a permanent fix? PLEASE SAY YES!!!! (only if it's true....haha) Thanks!!
I just wish that I saw this a year ago, then I could have prevented this whole mess from ever happening. On my 2nd refurb from Sony now after trying the re-flow sucessfully 2 times and then just getting tired of it.
Those of you with NOISY PS3 models, and want to fix it, use Arctic Silver 5 and your system should run much quieter afterwards. It is better than the cheap stuff some of the processing plants must have put on there.
My PS3 is whisper silent again after applying a coat of arctic silver 5.
Also, if you are concerned about losing track of the screws, consider putting them in separate labeled evelopes with descriptions on where to put them back in to avoid confusion later on.
omg my life sux im forced to move away from friends dnt get my own room took forever to get a tv dnt get to listen to the gameplay and change schools and everyone constant nagging at me my dam ps3 the ps3 ive had for almost 4 years gets the dam ylod!!!!!
@Ducati5965 More tutorials are coming soon, but the 40GB is actually less complicated to clean.
YLOD is only fixed by repairing or replacing the ~1300 solder balls that hold the RSX processor to the motherboard. We will launch a YLOD Repair Guide soon.
@superkm101 Every YLOD PS3 that we receive was manufactured between 2006-2008. After PS3s are 3 years old, they can overheat at any time. That's why we recommend cleaning the heat sink BEFORE overheating causes a $150 problem for you.
@fixmyplaystation All right thanks. By the way, I noticed that you didn't use those things that you wear on your wrist to prevent static on electronic equipments. Don't I need one when touching the PS3 motherboard?
@fixmyplaystation Alrighty I got everything I need and soon I'm going to try to fix my PS3. Thanks for the video uploads. I know it's a video to prevent the PS3 YLOD but my PS3 already have the YLOD. I'm going to attempt to reflow with a heat gun. Do I reflow only the two processors and not the entire circuit board?
@justplyn2010 In the video we mention that you should only detach the ribbon cable at the drive... not at the motherboard, because it's difficult to reattach without breaking the interface clip.
Fans (external or attached intercoolers) are a good idea. But remember that the thermal paste is the key to preventing YLOD. You can have 5 fans under the hood of your car, but it's $10 worth of Prestone that means the difference between driving and walking.
I put a few axial fans in the area of my gaming center to help it cool. Two for Intake Two for Exhaust. It also helps coolling if you lay your PS3 flat / horizontally.
:) Thanks. When you repair consoles for a living, the drill/screwdriver is a lifesaver. When we have more than 10 units waiting, one of us will open/prep them while the other gets started on cleaning/repairing.
Sorry I didn't understand the original drill question.

@Freddie2916 No. We believe that dried-out thermal paste is the reason your heat sink can't fully perform it's processor-cooling job.
