I'm very confused with what is happening in this opera. The music is fantastic, but what does this scene, a crazy mother, two birds, some boys and a priest all have to do with. Long live the music though!!

Mozart set a lot of terrible librettos to music, - this is one of them! The plot really makes no sence at all. But who goes to the opera for lyrics annyway? We'll just have to delight in the music;)

Pamina is the daughter of the Queen of the Night, who has an agenda against Osiris who has taken Pamina away from her mother to protect her from her evil influence. However, unbenowst to them, Osiris servant Monostatos is lusting after Pamina and its up to Papageno and Tamino to rescue her from him and the Queen of the Night.

Well this opera is sort of like a musical - in a way. It is a type of opera called a singspiel, which involves both singing and spoken dialogue. It is one of the predecessors to early musicals.
