@fuglymidgets The problem with that quote is during the war John Wayne was not an A list actor. He didn't have that kind of pull. But he did enlist for the OSS at John Fords request.
You have a lot to learn about John Wayne but you probably won't find much truth on the internet. you need to read some books about him to get the truth. He was an old man by military standards of the day at the outbreak of war. He was 34 years old and had a family. He had an injury from surfing that probably would have qualified him a "4-F" physically unfit for service. When he did attempt to enlist the studios pulled strings to block it and threatened his career. Read before you post please.
@kiowa473 I feel, you man. And even if John had just pulled strings to stay out of the military, the service he did to this country through his films was equally as valuable. We wouldn't know tough or badass quite as well if it weren't for the Duke.
fuglymidgets: Well, good thing you're only 15! Plenty of time to enlist when you're a little older and jump into the mix on a front-line. I'm sure there will be plenty of conflicts for years to come waiting for you! I for one applaud your selfless act (as I do those who have, and do, defend this great nation). Which branch of the armed forces will you join? Me...? No, I did not go the military route but I'm not the one mouthing off here. Update us here and thanks in advance! Good luck.
i'm 22 years old; most people my age don't watch westerns but i think they're pretty good movies to watch and i think that john wayne was a great actor and man. i believe he was a just man to all races of people because in his movie, he told this black man that was a killer on the loose, "i don't have a racist bone in my body but i shoot you dead as quick as i would a white man." classicp.s. i'm blk 2

no he does not die in the green berets at the very end the little boy is lookin for peterson and the ending has the boy on the beach with john standing next to him he did not die

John Wayne was killed in 2 other movies beside the Cowboys: The Sands of Iwo Jima where he is shot by a Japanese sniper and The Shootist where he takes a shotgun blast from a bartender. All other movies where his character dies he was not directly killed by anyone. And believe it or not in The Alamo a movie he invested in his character killed himself when he blows up a gunpowder magazine to stop the Mexicans.
Hi, kellogs715, I have seen maybe 25 movies with the duke, I always been a sucker for movies were the "hero" dies in the end, I have only seen 4 movies were the Duke has died, SANDS OF IWO JIMA, ALAMO, COWBOYS and THE SHOOTIST, what other movies do you mean?
I have 9 movies now with John Wayne were he dies, you don't see him die in all of them but in most of them :) REAP THE WILD WIND (1942) THE FIGHTING SEABEES (1944) WAKE OF THE RED WITCH (1949) SANDS OF IWO JIMA (1949) SEA CHASE (1955) ALAMO (1960) THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) THE COWBOYS (1972) THE SHOOTIST (1976) Those are the facts :) // Mattias.
There's so much more to this movie---to that scene---maybe because I was the same age as most of the boys, when the movie came out,I consider it and the Shootist to be John Wayne's best movies.McQ's not bad, either.
does anyone know of a online streaming site to watch this movie on? i couldnt find it on megavideo or netflix

Best John Wayne movie.

Actually John Wayne was 4F because of football injuries to his knees and that is what kept him from enlisting in WWII.

I'm 49 years old and I've hated Bruce Dern since I first saw this movie in the theaters in 1972. Damn I loved John Wayne!!!

what are you talking about john wayne is a legend he is the greatest actor of all time
claydopeproductions 3 years ago 2
Bruce said he really took a beating from Duke during the filming of this scene... he's quite a bit lighter than big ol' Duke...

I cried so hard when I saw this in the theatre. I still do. I must have cried for a week when Mr. Wayne died.
On a Happier note, were those boys the luckiest bunch? I wonder what they're all doing now.
