Beauty nothing ! I was a kid of gypsy like parents ! The family went were the job dictated ! Have liked this song ever since a babysitter left it on a 45 ! Thanks for post !
I loved Ricky. Very much. I was in the 8th grade when he started recording, and yes I loved Elvis, but I REALLY loved Ricky! And there's a video of Mark Harmon singing where he sounds just like Ricky, because of course they were related! Elizabeth
I ran into Rick in the narrow hallway at the Roxy in L.A., in 78. No one else around.
He was coming in the back door, carrying the shirt he was going to change into, over his shoulder, for a show he was doing that night. We both had to turn sideways to pass one another. He didn't know me, I said 'Hi Rick' ...wished him good luck with the show. He thanked me, and was as down to earth and friendly as he was when you saw him on the Ozzie and Harriet show... A nice memory.
@felisberto2 No. He was in the second tier of music like everyone else. Elvis was fairly or unfairly the only one in the first tier. Personally, I thought Buddy Holly was better and Rick Nelson just as good as Elvis.
I thought "Ricky" was the best in the 50's. Most of us never got a chance to see Elvis except at the movies, but for a few years Ricky sang on wedneday nights on the "Ozzie and Harriet" show.
Ricky Nelson died on December 31, 1985 but it wasn't a plane crash ~ it was a crash landing; the DC-3's cabin was completed engulfed in flames by the time the pilot & copilot got it on the ground. The flight crew escaped down ropes built into the aircraft (throwing the ropes on both sides of the cockpit out the side windows allowed both pilots to slide down safely). Unfortunate Ricky, his financee ~ Helen Blair, the 4 man band as well as the road manager all burned to death in the fire.
@The72298881 I have to agree with ur comment!....for one thing he had so many bueatiful hits that had there not been an Elvis Presley he'd of definetly been the "King od R&R & secondly you`re right again he was a very handsome man...2nd to none!!. Bobby Vee was a knockout too but Ricky was the role model, when it comes to a terrific looking young man. We watched him grow up, those of us that were lucky enough to have a tv back when, & if it wasn`t his tight jeans, it was his blue eyes.
ricky nelson will always stand in elvis shadow but i believe there is room for both of them they both used their talent to touch the lives of others and i am so greatful they did!
I still hate it that the news reported that his plane went down due to the people on the plane doing drugs on the plane and caused a fire. It had to be terrible for his Mother
and his Brother to hear that. They couldn't wait til the experts determined the real
cause before they went on the news. All that terrible press and all it was was a lousy
faulty heater. I hope the people that made those reports are proud of themselves.
Elvis had a different sound than Ricky. Ricky actually had quite a few poses that were just like Elvis. Elvis had alot of influence on singers of that era and more later on. I like them both equally well. Its a shame we lost them both too damn early. I know all of them have to be putting on one hell of a show someplace they got top talent.
@49kasey I have to agree that although he was absolutely gorgeous Ricky didn't go around being arrogant and disrespectful. Parents did a wonderful job raising their sons. Nowadays kids have respect for no one. They're go around acting selfish, bad-mouth everyone with a feeling of entitlement about everything.
@dancewitme211 Exactly right. I was a kid back then when Ricky was on t.v. singing his songs to us. His father Ozzie was able to 'sneak' rock 'n' roll into American homes because of his son. Even the adults back then admired Ricky and his family. He was a very humble guy.
I don't suppose it was all roses always being in the lime light. Hard to be a normal teenage boy when absolutely everyone knows and loves you and your music.
Just glad that he will always be here in his music. Rick we still love you.
I use to sell newspapers on the studio lot. I think it was on Mc Cadden Place or Las Palmas in Hollywood. I was accepted by the t.v. crew and the Nelsons. Rick was pretty shy. David was really nice and went out of his way to talik with me. I was only 12 at the time. Harriet gave me some of Rick's clothing that he out grew. Nice, nice family!
I love you Ricky, I cry whenever I think of you. I saw your sons perform you're songs not too long ago and they would make you proud. You are the best and no one can compete with you. You are truely blessed with such wonderful boys. I love Matthew!!!
@lillbacken it is ashame , but music like this will never be heard again....such a pity...it was a great time to be alive and we will all take it to tyhe grave,,,
Teenage stars back in the day were great compared to them now....if you thought Elvis was this big ol bad role model then look at Miley Cyrus or Brittney Spears....The likes of Ricky Nelson, Pat Boone, Everly Brothes and Elvis will never be forgotten
YES! I remember this one!! My very first *teen* record at 13, and my very first *reality check* in heartaches! I got a signed picture of Ricky...and I thought he really was in love with me...until I saw the way he signed my best friend's pic...IDENTICAL!!! BOY what a let down in a young girl's life!!! It broke my heart when I heard the news of Ricky's death! That heartache all over again! RIP Ricky...you are STILL my very first love!
I met Ricky after one of his concerts. This was when he was with his band, The Stone Ponies. He seemed so genuine and nice. I told him that I was glad he was still performing live and what a privilege it was to meet him and hear him sing. He humbly thanked me.
Ricky Nelson made watching television in the 1950's and 1960's fun. When he music became a part of each show, at the end, it got even better. As a Baby Boomer (born in '47) I owe Ricky and his family much for helping to make my younger years that much more enjoyable. We lost him much too soon (12/85) ~ I remember the sign I had in the back window of my car when he was killed, "We'll Miss You Ricky."
Born in '52, a Ricky Nelson song at the end of his family's TV show was always the highlight my brothrer and I patiently waited for. Even though the acting and storylines were fun to watch, it was Ricky's singing we most liked. When I think of a perfect voice and good looks, Ricky comes to mind, and he always had such a wonderfuly calm demeanor, which I envied about as much as his talent.
What a gorgeous guy with a nice voice-(w/songs that girls like) . My first crush when I was 4 - early 60's. His twin sons born in the 60's-appeared w/their mom -Kris-on My Three Sons. (my mom watched all those shows)
@sunshine19701989 : Very Few could argue the point with you. Shortly after Rick's death Billboard Magazine wrote a tribute to him. In this article they said that from the responses they recieve during his personal apprearences that he was considered by most girls to be better looking than Elvis. I have that article written in 1986 and I agree with them too.
Me and my uncle used to drink whiskey every night and listen to his beautiful songs. My uncle used to say how a perfect singer he was. He always mentioned that Ricky died too young and had more to offer. Now my uncle died, hopefully his dreams come true so he can meet Ricky in heaven.
@79anson Yes Ricky certainly died too young...My wife & I used to play his records all the time in 1959 when we were courting and deeply in love...Sadly my wife too died young in 1983...I get so very nostalgic feeling both sad & happy when I still listen to his many songs from my young days...I will be 72 this month...But no Gill & no Ricky
I too have lost a loved one that Ricky's music reminds me of. But just think of how lucky we are that we were able to have those great times with a "Special Person". Keep remembering my friend and those memories will keep them still alive in your heart.
I am a huge Elvis Fan seen all his movies too many times, But Ricky Nelson will always be my favorite .Elvis even got scotty Moore's, Ricky's guitar player . i could identify with R.nelsons songs way more in the reality part. Elvis was Bigger then life ,Where Ricky was where people lived in the real world
I see a lot of people comparing Rick and Elvis in Ricky Nelson's section of YouTube. Each one of them is different in their own ways. So please stop comparing and enjoy those good times.
i LOVE ricky nelson, but must disgree with you, he wasnt even close to ELVIS when it came to talent. good singer, nice looking man, but could never hit those notes like the king, or even tom jones. but i do love ricky.
I always loved RN I was still at school when he recorded Dream Lover and we used to sing it together in the playground at break time, my Husband found an old tape of his years later and bought it for me and i still love you Ricky, you were soooo gorgeous and your voice still does it to me
The thing about Ricky compared to Elvis was Ricky seemed so real, like he could live down your street or somerthing.. a very real acting fella. And he did give Elvis a run for his money early on!!! I loved his Stomce Canyon Band also THEY were definatley underappreciated , which was the reason for the Garden Party song btw
the ozzie and harriet show !!! better looking than elvis and a better voice. (and I like elvis). his tragic death on that plane. what a loss !!!!!!! LOVE his songs.... mike
I loved Nelson's songs as a young teenager. He had the best musicians & production for it's era. Of course his father had been a big-band leader & his mother a vocalist during the 40's, so it was natural that Rick had talent! See if you hear any similarity tween his voice & mine. 'Rhonny' by Robin Brown....on youtube, too.
Heyy madame!!! I said a few bad words for you ın the past...I am really very sorry for you... I had my personal and economic problems and I was nervous.
I want to apologize from you now...I apologize from you...Please believe me, I am really very sorry for you...
Ricky had it all, looks, talent, charisma, I pray that he rest in peace. I can only imagine how famous and even more influential he would have been had he lived. I thought of him the other night, while I was watching the grammys. Thanks for all the memories Rick, you are not forgotten.
I respectfully disagee on the last parts of your comment. Rick probably would have faded somewhat in my humble opinion, if he wouldn't have died when he did. I think when he died people in his generation still had memories of his first records in his teens and early 20's that put him over the top and gave him his a major portion of his overall fame. Don't get me wrong when he died it was a tragedy, the world lost a great young singer and an even better person, but remember that he was booed
(cont) off stage for "growing up" in the late '60s and trying new stuff. His old admirers by in large hadn't moved and were in the previous decade somewhere. Garden Party in 1985 was his settling of this complex issue- "You can't please everyone so you got to please yourself." Anyway he died right after that- as his own man. In no way is this cold or callous but it "was his time" (my head bowed.) His fame is more far reaching today in part because of when (and how) he died like Buddy Holly.
RIP Eric "Rick" Nelson. You are missed more than you know. The pain of your tragic, unexpected death spans future generations. May his soul have the peace and serenity his voice brought (and continues to bring) to so many people...and the lyrics in Garden Party are absolutely golden words to live by.
Although he was beautiful, with piercing blue eyes, and a teen idol, Ricky Nelson was a tormented teen who was rarely happy. No one could ever really figure out why. Years later, a childhood friend of Ricky would say that Ricky was never able to recognize his own beauty and was extreamly shy, detached, isolated, insecure about his looks and talent and could never understand what all the attention was about. These insecurities would haunt him throughout his teens and for the rest of his life.
Ya Allah... so handsome...I heard this song yesterday for the first time ...fell in luv with the voice...i dont know tht he's much more handsome that The Jonas Brothers

I feel you pain:
I too have lost a loved one that Ricky's music reminds me of. But just think of how lucky we are that we were able to have those great times with a "Special Person". Keep remembering my friend and those memories will keep them still alive in your heart.

I am a huge Elvis Fan seen all his movies too many times, But Ricky Nelson will always be my favorite .Elvis even got scotty Moore's, Ricky's guitar player . i could identify with R.nelsons songs way more in the reality part. Elvis was Bigger then life ,Where Ricky was where people lived in the real world

One of the first teenage idols. Listen to this and then 20 years later he writes and sings Garden Party. Both struggles with popularity.

I guess they call me a teenage idol, some people say they envy me, I guess they have no way knowing how lonesome I must be. Beautiful lyrics.

Ricky had it all, looks, talent, charisma, I pray that he rest in peace. I can only imagine how famous and even more influential he would have been had he lived. I thought of him the other night, while I was watching the grammys. Thanks for all the memories Rick, you are not forgotten.
lowfuellevel 2 years ago 5
I respectfully disagee on the last parts of your comment. Rick probably would have faded somewhat in my humble opinion, if he wouldn't have died when he did. I think when he died people in his generation still had memories of his first records in his teens and early 20's that put him over the top and gave him his a major portion of his overall fame. Don't get me wrong when he died it was a tragedy, the world lost a great young singer and an even better person, but remember that he was booed
jbmadvids4401 2 years ago
(cont) off stage for "growing up" in the late '60s and trying new stuff. His old admirers by in large hadn't moved and were in the previous decade somewhere. Garden Party in 1985 was his settling of this complex issue- "You can't please everyone so you got to please yourself." Anyway he died right after that- as his own man. In no way is this cold or callous but it "was his time" (my head bowed.) His fame is more far reaching today in part because of when (and how) he died like Buddy Holly.
jbmadvids4401 2 years ago
