  • Ireland is the best Country in the World

  • I pray that in my lifetime our four green fields will bloom..

  • This brought a lump to my throat and tear to my eye. Humbled.

  • Shit for all the comments! It´s a fine melody and a fine rendition, that´s all that matters.

  • What did I have, said the fine old woman

What did I have, this proud old woman did say

I had four green fields, each one was a jewel

But strangers came and tried to take them from me

I had fine strong sons, who fought to save my jewels

They fought and they died, and that was my grief said she

  • I wonder how many people at this concert understood what this song was really about?

  • Now i know who flogged the celtic Tiger it was Flatley. Knew hed bring the country down !!!

  • bravo...Well done. Kudo's to the late Tomy Makem for writing this piece. up the Republic !

  • this is certainly a good song in a calming and strong way. great number

  • @WildDancer101 Well said. :)

  • I used to sing this in the pubs/clubs in the north of England - I wish I'd have had this kick ass orchestra instead of a guitar!!

Actually...while I'm wishing - how about this audience too?? - Lol!!

  • gives me goosepimples

  • <3 Ireland

Pero creo har muchas in Youtube. Busca The Dubliners, Clannad, Celtic Woman, Planxty, Horslips (Mas modernizado pero bueno) the pogues, the Bothy boys. Hay muchas para difrutar. Suerte.

  • This is quite the song, I don't know how to look at it..I just hapened to coe across it. It's obviously has something to do with fighting for your rights...it's long been history now by the sounds of it. Do you remember he "Deck of Card" by Wink Martindale? Take a listen.

  • Sung as though it was part opf an opera and perhaps it should be. That would be something to see.

  • @josephonwhidbey It was.. Trust me. I've seen the show. This song was performed in the perfect way..

  • Gets me every time...love it!!!!!!

  • LOVE this song.

  • Ireland, I'm with you....

  • Brilliant song, so patriotic and sad at the same time, real pathos here for Ireland !

  • I heared so much versions of this song, but I think this version is one of the best because there is the right feeling in the voice of Harrington for this great song!!! Thank you Paul!

  • This man has the voice of an angel...

  • @ Mr grumpy...kid killing is an art of the british...google 'plastic bullet deaths' ...deliberate murder of children by you....

  • @IRAprovos And ye were so Innocent gimmie a break. Your cause got lost years ago in drug running & protection rackets. From the revolution heroes came nothing more than common scumbag criminals,

Power corrupts no matter how noble the cause. Many kids also died in enniskilen and british bombings

  • @will00078@will00078 prove your FALSE allegations...then tell me with your intelligent brain why your new found british friends fought a WAR against China for the control of heroin...traitor to the Irish...by propagating...english...lies...Your no Irish than the sow pig that OWNS you...TAL

  • @IRAprovos Love the way you completely sidestepped the issue. Your a dellusional republican tool answer me were the killings in omagh and enniskilleen right.

I suppose your also supporting Gadaffi since he ran funds for ye. So what if the british fought that war over drugs. Dont know the facts so wont comment. But I assure you my friend Im as much an Irishman as you claim to be. So go to your pityfull hatred.

Bet you never knew that churchhill commited 50000 to IR gov in case of Ger Invasion

  • @will00078 Churchill was not defending the Irish, he was defending the gain and wealth of the british empire..

  • @will00078 Churchhill was making sure the back door to britian was well and truly barracaded with that money. Omagh and Enniskilleen were acts of a minority who are cornered, and any cornered creature will fight tooth and nail to survive. Would save England a LOT of money to just give us back our land, and everything else you stole over the last 800 years and GFTO of OUR country.

  • MISE EIRE!!!

  • I wonder how the traitors who bargained and sold feel when they hear this wonderful song

  • This was a great version of Tommy's song. I cried to see the young people in awe as the proud words and lovely photos presented themselves to their youth and inexperience. Yes, this was a fine version.

  • so was wunderbares! wir haben celtic tiger in stuttgart gesehn

  • My best friend wrote this song. The late tommy makem.

  • The best rebel song ever...Respect to your mate Tommy Makem...a legend.

  • Oh you bet i do. I miss him every day of my life. There isnt a day that im not sure if hs watching over me from heaven.

  • That's wonderful, this is so beautiful, it's magic !

  • @irishpride9999 Tommy was my best friend too..........though I never met him.

  • that is the second best rendering of this song i have ever listened to, my favourite is from the late Kathleen Largey, great upload, was a pleasure to watch and listen to the song being sung from the heart.

  • Kathleen Largey..wasn't she shot dead by the british army???...WAS she in the group 'The Flynig Column'...the best version of this song ever sung.

  • hello IRAprovos , Yes, Kathleen was in the ,"Flying Column", and No, to the best of my knowledge, Kathleen Died of cancer after a long ilness, but i stand corrected if i am wrong.

    Tiocfaidh ar la

  • No you stand true she did unfortunelatey died of cancer...a woman who inspired a nation of oppressed people to rise...Fear Bas

  • Comment removed

  • @IRAprovos You are thinking of 14 year old Kathleen Feeney who was shot in the back by an IRA sniper!

  • So beautiful, I love it !

  • can someone please tell me who is singing this beautiful song,is it tommy fleming?

  • Against the backdrop of an air view over Ireland and its graves Paul Harrington, former Eurovision winner 1994- and pianist at Lillies Bordello, treated us to an emotional version of "Four Green Fields".

  • Tiochfaidh Ar La

  • Beautiful song and great video!

I love to see the girls' faces... they seem raptured!

Love to Tommy Makem, as well.

  • Super song....cuts deep to think the 4th green field is still in bondage....Tiochfaidh Ar La !!

  • What was the name of the song from celtic tiger that went something like this.

"So sing me an old fashion song, to raise my spirit high" ?

  • War touches the real life!! There is no pretending that history does not tread on our heels!!

  • Is that Michael singing? Great voice

  • No, it's Paul Harrington. I love his voice.

  • Four Green Fields Beautifully done my Michael Flatley Gives me goose bumps Totally awesome

    Marina Hoskins

  • Please excuse the typo - Rest in Peace, Tommy Makem.

  • This is what one would expect from Michael Flatley, but nothing matches Tommy singing this in the old days in his Irish Pavilion on 57th, located so conveniently by Doran's and so many other great Irish bars. God bless all, and R.I.P., Tommy Maken

  • OlIVER im drunk and im pissed now you cunt

im guessing your a 30yr old living in ur mum house and shages her now and then u insead cunt

  • georgepaul15,

I'm curious, are you really any more lucid when sober?

    Thought not....chuckle.

  • Aggravating people seems to be something you are good at. Please refrain from this as it is tedious and people are going to be much more unpleasent towards you.

This is a friendly remark, as I, by no means, intend to try and threaten you, only inform you that you do seem to be trying to annoy people deliberatley.

I encourage you to stop this as it is frustrating and people get annoyed by behaviours such as these.

  • Emikero,

I do not agree my friend.

If you are annoyed or aggravated - that is your problem.

I suggest you ask yourself why that might be.

I also believe you would deny me the right to free expression if you could; however you cannot.

If you choose to link yourself with an exponent of foul language, filth, and name-calling like georgepaul15 - that is up to you.

Birds of a feather and all that....

  • Oliver,

I am sorry to hear that you do not agree with me.

I believe that I would not try to deny anyone, no matter how annoying, their right to free expression. So I am sorry to say, my friend, that you have wrongly judged me in that court.

I am refraining from being exceptionally unpleasent for the sake of anyone else reading this argument. As I can write some very unpleasent things.

Yes you have the right to your opinion. And I have the right to think you are stupid.

    Which I do, Oliver.

  • Emikero,

Well at least you managed to compose a response without descending into foul language, filth, and name-calling this time.

Other than that you have no point to make except perhaps that you do not like the fact that I do and have the 'temerity' to express it.

  • Oliver,

I fail to see in any of my comments, me "descending into foul language, filth, and name-calling."

I am sorry to say, Oliver, that I do have a point to prove. It is the point that you make wars where none need to be made and seem to find some pleasure in aggrivating someones comment to mean something you find offensive.

This is a tedious way to live, Oliver and I suggest you refrain from it. It will only hurt you in the long run.

    Saoirse Na hEireann.

  • Paul Harrington is the best singer in the world. After Gyula Vikidal.!!! :D:D:D :P:P:P

  • :DDDD Are you idiot? By the way...you said it well.

  • @halmayg23 that`s right, dude

  • and you certainly sound like a cunt

  • oliver you sick little coword, next time you see an irishman i bet you wont say the things your saying to one of our faces, cause if i heard some english fella talking like that id jump all over there face.and id make sure they never talk bullshit again

  • berrier123,

    Interesting....

I take it you've done time in the past then?

You certainly sound like a criminal.

I stand by my comments, every word.

  • tell me, oliver, why shouldnt the 6 ulster counties currently under british sovereignity return to Ireland? afterall, it is my opinion that the british have no business in Ireland. imagine the french conquering England and when it became free once again theyd still have control over Northumberland, for instance. im serious here, so dont answer with bullcrap, if you please.

  • Chapels,

The Normans invaded England in 1066.

Should their descendents now be sent packing back to France with their heads bowed?

    Come, come now....

Are you seriously advocating that the British Unionist majority of Northern Ireland get out?

Perhaps you deny that they are British?

For the life of me, I really don't think you've thought this one through.

  • the example you are giving does not reflect the northern irish condition. along the course of history many peoples move here and there. in the case of the normans, afterwards normans and saxons alike formed part of what became the kingdom of england. the irish have always had their own culture, different from british culture, and the irish natives did not willingly become part of the uk. the fact is that the majority of the people in NI consider themselves to be british.

  • (sorry, but these things are too short)

If so, if the majority of the people regard themselves as british what are they doing in irish soil? because that land is irish, but the government that holds sovereignity over it isnt. of course that the people want to remain under british sovereignity if they were born there, lived there, sons and daughters of people who were british themselves. but, again, that was the result of discriminative policies and colonisation of Ireland in the 1700s

  • Chapels,

I suggest you consult the UN, EU, or the US.

Northern Ireland is internationally recognized as British and part of the United Kingdom.

That is what the last 30+ years of the 'troubles' were about.

A settlement is now in place under the St Andrew's Agreement.

Would you have them go back to violence?

  • of course not. and the north is in fact regarded as british territory. that is the official situation. but, once again, that territory was taken from ireland and the irish nation comprises all the island of ireland. if people in NI are irish, they may stay, british can stay, protestant, catholic can stay there. but the british government cannot. it has had no legitimacy to take the north to begin and as such as no legitmacy to keep the north.

  • I am sorry, I was Very angry at the last few statements I have read! I believe the UK should completley end all conection`s it has with IRELAND, The island of EIRE is Our land, Our Home, the Home of Our Ancestor`s , Our People. Fuck with Us ,Mess with Us All!!!

  • you tell em ,What sort of english fool would even speak such rubbish(sorry I am aware of the language I use for FEAR OF BEING EDITED OUT)

  • Chapels,

The North American 'indians' had and still have their own separate 'culture'.

I tell you what....if you can convince every single United States resident of non-indigenous origin to get back on the Mayflower and sail back to England, then you might be taken more seriously.

  • thats a nice point! in fact the american settlers(i.e. british, dutch, french, etc) they completely smashed amerindian culture. do you think they had the right to do that? do you think they should have taken the natives out of their homelands and put them in reservations and deprived them of their cultural habits? i dont. but nowadays it isnt possible to make american as it once was. theres no solution now, but the northern irish problem Does have a solution. give ireland back to the irish.

  • You are not making alot of friends are you Oliver. Opinions can be voiced, but shouldn't alwyas be.

"Yes you have the right to your opinion. And I have the right to think your stupid."

Why don't you just stop picking fights and enjoy the videos? It would be so much easier and alot less hassle. Or maybe you like picking fights and having a go at totally inoccent comments...?

  • Emikero,

Do you have a point to make on the subject matter?

By the way, I love the "totally innocent comments" line.

This song is an endorsement of the Republican terrorist campaign in Northern Ireland my friend.

    Your protestations, however, are hilarious.

  • Oliver,

You are going to annoy completely the wrong people if you keep this up.

I knew some-what what the song was about, I do listen to lyrics, unlike most people.

And all I can say for your comments are that they are interesting to read, if you must make a point, make it silently, because though I am not one of the people you are liable to annoy, I am going to warn you that others may not appreciate your opiions as much as me.

  • Emikero,

    Please explain.

If you're going to issue threats then why not stop beating around the bush?

Who exactly are "the people you are liable to annoy"?

  • Oliver,

If you took my words of warning as a threat, then I beseach you to actually READ what was written.

It seems that this is something you do not often do, READ. If perhaps you read all the comments you argued with, you might actually see that there is nothing wrong with them and that you, my friend, are starting wars where none needs to be started.

We have ebough wars carrying on in life, we do not need your bad tempered arguments filling the comment boxes.

  • Emikero,

Please explain why I would need a "warning".

Also, you have not answered my question, perhaps you did not read it?

Therefore, I'll ask again, who exactly are "the people you are liable to annoy"?

    What might they do?

    Do tell....

  • georgepaul15 is a prime example of the people you are liable to piss off.

Please, I do ask that you retire fropm this tedious argumentative stage of your life. I have warned you because people are likely to get you blocked from youtube.

I am now tired of this conversation and ask that you refrain from getting into arguments that are likely to end with someone getting hurt, either menatlly or physically.

Because you have started to annoy me greatly and agree with georgepaul15's comment.

  • @Oliver1649 This song was written prior to the beginning of the Troubles. The words spoken by the female character in the song are taken directly from a play by W.B. Yeats written decades vefore the song was written.

  • Chapels,

Are the British of Northern Ireland not part of the United Kingdom? It is not just remiss to ignore this, but insulting.

Northern Ireland is British and will so remain as long as the majority want it.

I, for one, cannot ever see that changing.

  • that problem concerns not the territorial issue, but the national issue. the people of northern ireland, the majority of it, are british, as a result of the plantations of ireland. they want to be british, they want to remain in the UK. i completely understand that. they were born there. but that doesnt mean that NI should be under british sovereignity. just because the majority of the people there want to remain part of the UK doesnt mean the UK has any right there.

  • F off you twat,I would ring your neck you sad english royalist!

  • @Oliver1649 The rights and culture of Unionists must be protected. The former Prime Minister of Ireland said that if a united Ireland is to be achieved Unionists need to fell that they belong to a united Ireland. Nationalists and Unionists share a common island and history. That's my position also.

  • @Oliver1649 I never even suggested that this song would change the opinions of Unionists nor would I expect it to do so. I simply stated that there are misconceptions about the intent of the song. I would never feel at home in the U.K. I respect the U.K. and deplore the actions of terrorists but I'm not British.

The Irish people have their own history, culture, and objectives. By culture, I mean much more than music, etc. We form a nation in other words.

  • I'll join you! (and I've only a little Irish blood)

  • A true real great Song...

  • cunt

  • This song as sung in this video takes my breath away it does.
