I first heard this song on some obscure radio station in the SF Bay Area many years ago, maybe in the late 70's--I thought it was magical and mysterious back then and I still think ti today. O'Keefe is a unique artist.
Breezy Stories is one of my favorite albums and Mad Ruth my all time favorite song. I first heard the song on the radio from Moyock, NC in the early 70's and I heard Danny do it live in Sellersville, Pa about a year ago.
I find Danny even better as the years go bye, I guess in a way its good that he never got too popular becuase he is still making great music today. Unfortunately too many writers from his time are not anymore. What a rare treasure his words and music are.
yes, thank you. however, why no mention of danny's best work, "american roulette"? also, thank you to the buckley friend, how 'bout that "buzzin' fly"?
For those of you not familiar with Danny O'Keefe, he also had a hit back in the '70s with "Good Time Charlie Has The Blues" which was another great piece of work. I have the album and was pleasantly surprised that one of my all time favorite vocalists, Eddie Brigatti (formerly of the Rascals) does some backup vocals as well. Eddie is another great talent who should have had a lot more attention and success. Hope he's still singing and kickin' it!
The Leo Sayer version is very good ; and true to the spirit of the tune. (and perhaps Sayer makes it a little easier to understand the great O'Keefe lyrics) But the nod has to go to Danny's version for having a little more...well...."soul'...
Loved Danny O'Keefe in the 70's and still to this day, he is timeless talent.

One of the finest albums of the 70's. If you ever see it, buy it. You will never regret it.

Nothing will match the eclectic 70s, even the AM stuff was good. This tune another example of what we've lost.

this guy has an amazing voice, sort of like Donovan mixed with Tim Buckley, and his lyrics are almost better than both.
