  • I believe moses hogan's mom is in this, correct?

  • The Bass gives me Goosebumps.

  • 2:16 if you're a tenor and you have to sing that high A, you better squeeze your butt cheeks so tight you could hold a quarter in there.

  • @Arsenate22 or you could be a real tenor and just sing it

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!!!!!!

  • I JUST GOT CHILLS ALL OVER MY BODY....

  • actually it was first performed by the Sumter High Choir in 1998 at an ACDA written for and performed by Sonja Sepulveda. Moses wrote this specifically for her and the choir look at the top of you music...

  • Oh, Sonja...

  • @abercrombie9153

BOOOOOO DORMAN!!! SHS(SUMTER HIGH SCHOOL) ALL THE WAY!!!!!

THE ENSEMBLE FOR WHOM THIS PIECE WAS COMPOSED!

I really miss Moses, and am blessed to have had to opportunity to perform under his direction. A shining star truly taken too soon!

U can view an up-to-date reprise of the solo I sang under his baton by typing "BYRON BARR" into the search field....

    (:-)

  • @AnalogPirate

Woah, there. I'm not even getting into this argument.

It's just hard to be as good as we were ;-)

  • I could listen to 0:23-0:32 all day and never get tired of it.

  • Wow!

  • My choir is doing this peice, and i can say it is one of my favorite spirituals ever. Moses Hogan was a genius. May he rest in peace.

  • Absolutely AMAZING!

  • This is so freakin awesome. haha

  • At 0:28, watching the basses rock that low E loud and clear was amazing. That's hard to do.

  • @VanSensei i thought it was a D. im prob wrong then

  • They say it best at about "2:12-2:17 "oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, OH YES!"

  • they brought it to church from 2:18 to 2:28

  • YYYYEEESSSSS !!!!! the men are killin this !! ahhhh this song gives me chills !!!!

  • i sang this at region choir last year

  • Phenomenal. Nearly makes me cry each time. I can't wait to have my choir sing Hogan once I start teaching.

  • i got the chance to sing w bryan stratton of y

    he chorale amazing

  • FINALLY. of course the best would be moses hogan's chorale himself.

love Love LOVE the bass! and yes, i agree with yall, it doesnt drag.

bravo and rest in peace, hogan.

  • sweetjesus1234 why to be mature! no one can say anything about this video because this is the man himself! it is his music! it is perfect!

  • Soprano 1 rocked the FREAKING HOUSE! I love the speed of this two. Did not drag at all!

  • Amazing!!!

  • :29... Gotta love those bass voices!! It gives you chills!

  • When I was in high school, our chamber chorale pulled this song off amazingly. That was 6 long years ago. If you can't appreciate this song while it's being conducted by the original composer, you are obviously not a singer or even a musician for that matter. Good day.

  • wow....my favorite concert choir song to perform

  • Wow, reading some of the comments for this video is entertaining. All I know is Moses Hogan is amazing and I have had the pleasure of performing a few of his pieces. Choral music is an enlightening experience.

  • Quite amazing...:)

  • That soprano soloist is badass

  • I love these comments.... people talking about their choirs and degrees and their expert opinions critiquing a song that is being directed by the composer! IDIOTS!!! I mean it says "Moses Hogan Chorale" at the top... who would know better you are his choir..LOL! I love pseudo-intellectuals

  • And of course nothing could be wrong with Moses Hogan's direction. Apparently personal taste isn't allowed.

  • lol I didn't mean to give you a thumb's down. Sorry, but I COMPLETELY agree!!

  • Dude, this is the perfect tempo! We sang this at my choir, and we did the same thing with the same tempo --___-- Pssh, you people >:3

  • nice, very rich American heritage.

  • Guys what is wrong with you! This is the Original Moses Hogan Chorale and Moses Hogan (directing)..This is how it's done!!! Wake the hell up folks!

  • Why on earth did they have a final tour? What happened?

  • Moses Hogan died.... thats what happened.

  • yall betta sing is sounds rich!!!!

  • Yea my highschool choir is doing this we slowwed it down just a tiny bit because its suppose to be fast.

  • I think its too fast..

  • i agree-we sang this much slower.you can hardly understand what they're saying it's so fast

  • retard the man who wrote it is directing!

  • Who the hell is conducting?

  • moses hogan! the man who wrote it!!!! so u guys do itto slow!

  • That IS HIM!!!! What a Legend!!

  • @evifnoskcaj its Moses Hogan himself...thats who the hell it is

  • This has to be the most moving performances I've seen of this piece. I performed this piece in my college choir, and it so difficult. Hats off to this group!

  • haha becuase theses are the people who sing it orriginally :)

  • maybe i will because i can pretty much anything i want, i make 90,000 a year while you sit on youtube pretending you're in a choir thats St. Olaf. caliber, unlike an adolesent teenager i do not need to lie to comfort my own insecurities

  • Well then you may want to call the University of Michigan (The second rated music program in the country) and tell them to take away my masters degree

  • take your masters and shove up your asz...if u so damn educated and you're holding an arguement with a 11th grader about a song who in da hell gave u that shitty asz degree bozoo da clown get a life and the choirs in georgia will kill yall sorry shyt..tell em i said it

  • you obviously don't understand anything about music. You would not even be able to begin to comprehend all of the finer subtleties of a piece like this. And if he needs proof of his masters, I think we would like some proof that your choir is as good as you say it is

  • finaly someone who truly appreciates good choral music

  • datz shyt u can callem and tell em i say dey suck..and u probably bulshittn cuz we on da computer u aint got no damn proof u just a lil asz kid ..i'll piss on yo grave shut the fuck up tlkn to me

  • Cool grammar. I bet you're black.

  • Because black people are the only people on the face of the earth with poor grammar skills, right? And then you have the nerve to say something so idiotic in the comments section of a video of a composition made by a black man and his black choir.

  • i would be willing to bet my career as a professional conductor that you are talking out of your ass

  • i would be willing to end this conversation on that note because obviously u suck as a conductor if you cant get a song like this down pack show's how well u teach STUPID ASZ BOI

  • yess now that is how it's done my choir at my school sings thos song BUTLER HIGH SCHOOL SHOW CHOIR AUGUSTA,GA (superior ratings) and we aint perfect it like dat yet but we're almost thier ,that was simply beautiful..great job

  • i guarentee yo uany high scholl choir will never be able to do it this good, most college choirs cant

  • mmm true and i guarentee you we can u never heard us we know how to shut most college choirs down. ..

  • them basses representin!!!!!!!!

  • I love this song. I always get the 2nd solo. My high school choir sang this in Ithaca, NY for Ithaca College's Composer Contest. This was our opening piece before the contest. We take the tempo a little slower though, but still with the same power and passion

  • @OperaticRockstar

Go Dorman! I was with the Dorman Choir that originally went up to Ithaca. Loved that trip.

  • This is real nice . I had the chance to sing this with my school choir so I am greatful for that.

  • Love, love, love the basses in this song, goodness.

  • I love Moses Hogan. The chorale has one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. Thanks for the music Mr Hogan. Rest in Peace YOUR LEGACY IS CEMENTED.

  • Most of the groups on youtube dont sing this piece as well as the original Moses hogan Chorale....i have only found a few who are just as good or close

  • WE'RE SiiNGiiN THiiS F0R 0UR W0MEN'Z ENSEMBLE =]

    PRETTy JAMMiiN L0L

  • we're singing this song in chorale. i love their soprano sound..its very nice

  • Gives me goosebumps every time :D

  • well sung.

  • i loved when our choir song this

  • There is another choir that does a TON of Moses Hogan Arrangements. Sometimes better than the Moses Hogan Chorale themselves! See for yourself though. The group's name is Atlanta's Chorale New Creation. They have several Different Pieces Posted here on You Tube.

  • just me or are the soprano ones a little overbearing?

  • its just you

  • Nebraska All-State Choir 2008 did this! Love it so much!

  • So did New York!!

  • The OKC All-National is doing this '09

  • Its Great at any tempo! Maybe they were singing this as an encore and were in a hurry to get off stage. After a long concert, short and sweet is best.

  • This was my favorite song the Dillard Concert Choir sang on tour! It's up there for me with Joshua Fit the Battle.

  • Moses you out dont yourself...I sang this song about 6 or 7 yrs ago in competetion!!! Great composer!Love you man, RIP

  • The soprano soloist was amazing.

  • we won first place with this song!!! oh yes! hallelujah! oh yes! are you anchored... oh yes! yes my soul's been anchored to the lord!!!

  • It's anchored "in" the lord. Not anchored to the lord.

  • i was refering to myself, that my soul is anchored to the lord, for the lord, in the lord. get it?! what im saying is different from the lyrics. storm-a-DORK

  • Great song of praise. Awesome indeed! Thank you and posting. Thank you for mentioning Trinity Episcopal church in New Orleans.5 stars!

  • this song will be our second song for the choir competition aside from the contest piece. and i agree that this song gives anyone the chills to who ever is listening. we will win with this song, and our souls are anchored in the lord! -patrick (bass/baritone)

  • omg the first time i heard this i was blown away i get chills still

  • GOD BLESS MOSES HOGAN a great man and writer!

  • damn all i can say is BRAVO Moses Hogan--rest in piece...i agree you dont tell a great man how to sing his own piece...if you dont agree of how the man made the song then i think you should go tell him yourself that you dont like the way he want the people to sing the piece...

  • the tempo is a little fast in places, but it sounds like rushing on the singers part, not the conductor. men have a decent sound, women are a bit warbled in places, but in some the soprano is dynamic.

  • in most cases I would agree.. but! thats moses hogan himself directing soo yeah.

  • Well they did say that it was the singers rushing...not the conductor...

  • what a virtuoso choir and director!!! my teacher went to school with Hogan and speaks of him much

  • oh yes and the church said amen

  • sing chirun!!

  • this song is amazing!!! one of choirs sang this at Warwick High School!!!

  • It's so FAST! Oh my gosh. It's a fast paced song, but you lose all the value of the song when it's so sped up.

I guess that's just the classical singing talking. :x

The basses at the beginning were a little sharp when they went to the low note.

    But other than that.

Great job on staying on pitch at this tempo.

  • This is the arranger directing this. I think his tempo is exactly what he wants!!!

  • What's your point?

  • Moses Hogan is directing the ensemble and he is taking his piece at the tempo he desired (unless he had too much coffee). Your critique about "lose all the value of the song when it is so sped up" is like telling a famous painter, you don't agreee with his painting.

  • this is my fav piece :) we had 2 sinq this in chamber choir

  • gahhhh amazing!

  • Moses Hogan is greatly missed...his pieces are raw emotion created by his wonderfully composed music.

  • This song is so much fun to sing!

  • amazing.

    the age of the singers

amazes me. they still have it :)

    the fast tempo is what

    he wanted, which makes

    this song even more intriguing.

  • We performed many arrangements by Moses Hogan when I was in high school. We took top honors at many national competitions with performing his work and some of our members had the pleasure of being under his direction before he passed.

These are the pieces I most deeply cherish!

  • go tenors - 2:16. And go sopranos! of course I'm biased though :D

I'm glad I got to hear it the way Moses Hogan intended it to be. Now I know my choir sang it way too slowly.

  • it should be slowed down

i mean my favorite part is when you hear the cords and blend of everyone

and it sounds amazing when you hear the notes held out

but u cant hear it when u sing it fast

  • The tempo given is also a musical allusion and sets the tone for what he really wanted out of the song. The chaos of life may come but my soul is anchored in the Lord. It created a very intense feeling which is what Dr. Hogan was going for.

  • Stunna, that is a sharp observation you made there! I love the fact that someone else caught that on here. I'm sure Moses hogan would have appreciated it too.

  • I think this song is too fast... even though he is directing it and composed it, I like it slower. The slowest I heard it done was by St. Olaf and they're about the only choir I know that could do it as slow was what they did and still make the song interesting.

  • slower? i think this tempo actually shows off the superiority of the choir.

  • We're singing this in our chamber choir and we sing it in a pretty slow tempo. I mean not slow~ but a moderate tempo. I perfer it like that; I feel like it's really rushed at this tempo

  • I'm not saying it would sound bad in a slower tempo, but when my choir sang this, we sang it this fast and it really showed off our superiority. I guess i'm just used to the fast tempo, though.

  • You have to understand. Anton Armtrong tends to slow everyting down... He's the director of St. Olaf. Some people like his slow tempos ohrs hate it. But I think hogans tempo is the tempo that he originally wanted so I can't argue with it.

  • i agree with kwjohnso....its his song lol

  • He can sing it however fast he wants! He arranged it. lol. One of my favorite songs from my favorite director/composer. Go Moses!

  • it fine just the way it is!!!!go head moses.

  • Great sound, but could this be any faster? Slow it down!

  • GREAT!!!! beautiful singing! we are learning this in college choir right now and thats exactly how we want it to sound like!! glorious job! keep it up! God bless!
