National Geographic gets great footage, but I wish they'd follow the example of documentarians like Ken Burns and David Attenborough, and lay off the overdramatic narration. It's a freakin' 5000 pound bomb! They're talking about the Chicxulub impact and K-T boundary extinctions! Do they think we'll think it's trivial if they don't pile on the the "Oooh, What a Big Deal This Is" narration? Give us credit for more brains than that.
The video was pretty cool until I realized there was a girl in the bunker. If there's anything that can accompany awesome explosions, it's chicks. Where else are we gonna get our sandwhiches?
If you tried to destroy it with bombs, it would probably not affect it much--depending on what it was made of and how it was structured. The best solution would probably be to divert it into a slightly different orbit. All you'd have to do is change the trajectory a tiny bit to make it miss. You'd need time to do that, though.
There's this amazing new product called gravity. Blow crap at it wouldn't do anything other than make more little pieces. Haha, well it was a good idea though. Blow it up... lmao. It's the size of DC!!! LOL XD
to be honest i think this is one of the reasons why a giant meteor is more likely to wipe the face of the earth... I bet if that scientist was given the opportunity to detonate a nuclear bomb just for "the sake of research" he'd do it... "it was a beautiful explosion"....á_á
try to also consider the impact an explosion of such an item. That would cause an outward force. They're measuring the damage capacity for an outward force, then magnifying it to scale.
Downward, could be tested, could be too unsafe though.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC needs to stop putting fear in people....one minute its 2012 or Nostradmus....now its a "DEADLY BLAST"...its gettin kind of redundant!
i love how national geographic accually shows the full video, unlike discovery they only show trailers and preview which leave you hanging, it sucks for those who dont have cable
Lets be serious here. If there's a giant meteor coming towards Earth, so what? What are we going to be able to do? Absolutely nothing. Live life while we still have it folks.
@farvision And the earlier it's detected, the easier it is. It would only take a small nudge in the right direction if you found it when it was, say, 10 years out. If it's only 1 year out, that's a much harder problem. And at 1 month, nothing to do but get ready for the end.
Well I suppose but this is huge from what I'm understanging. Anyways, what can we do? We can just run into it, that would be useless. Anyways, thanks for your comment I guess.
what a loser, lmao. last thing you wanna do before you die is play a gay ass video game. lol guess family and friends don't mean anything to you.... sad.
Magnificent experiment just saw 2012 and it's really spooky to see that the concussion wave is more devastating than the explosion itself it was a movie but very well simulated and seriously gets ones attention. The really spooky thing is it's easy to comprehend.
First off, that chick in the bunker is hot. secondly i dont see what the big deal is.. we are familiar with what majority of asteroids are made up of.. your telling me we cant come up with a "nuke" equivellant to the force of 100 trillion+ tons TNT force? I dont see how that would just not melt the shit out of something like we just saw. what is nasa even for?? americas most expensive hobby? just play with estes rockets or something...
whatever, i hate these little teasers NGC puts on youtube, gets you all into it and makes you watch on tv (which is what they want). But i always miss these shows :(

Because the kinetic forces that carries will keep it going towards the Earth ,
only now is coming in fragments like a shotgun more dangerous maybe .

Cool explosion, dumb experiment.
Since when does and outward blast compare to a solid object with a downward force?

In a sense you are correct,

Nirvana4554, if we detect it soon enough we could deflect it. This is a good reason to be out in space.

Right. So having outposts in space watching for such things would give us a big advantage, aside from getting us off the planet.
farvision 2 years ago
Maybe. We've been doing a reasonable job of finding them from Earth though.

not a good experiment
i mean the Meteor who would or had hit was made of ice and stone , iron i guess but not nitro. so the effect is hard to compare.
a computer simulation should show a more trustful event than this small A-team trick.
