I think it's because they own the building I guess and not relying on anyone else. There is another Ethiopian Church in San Diego but they share the Church with Palestinian Orthodox Churches.

Thanks for the info but i was talking to my Friend in Cali and she talled me that most of the Orthodox Churchs in Cali and some around the us like the St Michael in DC or Medhanialem are also reffered as independnt and that basically means that they don't just follow Patriarich Paulos or Patriarich Merkorios something along the line like they accept all prists and pops and what not. "they are all abt unity i guss"
