I wish I found those books! Be kinda hard since im in the US. I just read The Fault in Our Stars and I loved it! I just went to the library and got An Abundance of Katherines and Looking for Alaska, my goal is to read all of his books. I am a huge book worm, do you have any other books that you would recommend reading?
What a beautiful gesture! I truly hope those books make their way into the hands of someone who will appreciate them.
I took 'Will Grayson, Will Grayson' with me when I backpacked Europe in 2010, and when I finished it, though it definitely pained me to do so, I ended up book-swapping it with another traveller simply so that I had something new (in English!) to read!
I ended up really loving the idea of sending that book out into a continuing chain of backpacking book-swappers :D
I love your sharing the joy of John's books with someone else as you wait for The fault in Our Stars to arrive. I have been telling everyone about them and bought a second copy of TFIOS for a gift. The gift of a book is something I never forget.
I think its really great that you left them for anyone. You could have just dropped them with a friend, but that you truly gave them away made it that much more special. Well done.
What a great gift, Rosi! I love leaving books in random places for random people, and the way you did it is perfect - some of your favorite treasures. I hope whoever picks them up appreciates it.
Were you worried that the books wouldn't get to someone who would appreciate them? It's just that I would be and then I'd probably abandon the project entirely...
I feel like if I saw those books, I would be too shy to take them... which is awfully sad because that was a lovely not and package of books your put together. :)
Firstly, I LOVE SHERLOCK, secondly, you amazingly kind, thoughtful personality is defiantly reflected in your hand writing, thirdly, How do you have the stregnth to give away books???
I'm super possessive of my books and could never have given those books away! This was a lovely video. I'm really enjoying seeing these project videos. Oh, and by the way, your handwriting is gorgeous!
I started this project a day late, but nevermind. Yesterday I collected a bunch of old clothes and shoes and gave them away to a charity clothes bank. Mission accomplished. I think I'm going to enjoy these little tasks, thanks for introducing them to me Rosianna! :) Oh and Happy New Year xx
I left "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult at the Central Station Leipzig. I got the book when I lived in the UK from my mom, but I already bought the book at the airport and it was the only german book I had there and then I had it twice. I hope it has a new nice owner now :)
Furthermore I gave some of my old clothes to the German Red Cross. It felt good to make some space!
I really liked & agreed with what you said about your own experience with a book being personal & how difficult it is to share that with someone else. That might sound kind of obvious but it's so true! Like, I always find myself wanting my friends or whoever I share something with to 1) like/dislike it as I do, & 2) feel everything I felt as I experienced them, but that's what makes these experiences (books, tv shows, films, etc.) unique & so special. Your video reminded me of that, thanks!! :)
I gave away my favourite page from a book because that complies with my book's request as well. Today I have to make a bet with a friend which isn't that hard although I'm going to have to make the bet online as I'm not seeing anyone today
your handwriting is gorgeous O.o I kiiiinda want to copy it. would you mind? =P
oh and I just went on your tumblr page and I can't believe you use a horizontal scrolly page too! I just changed my theme a couple days ago and it took me forever to find a code for it.
and also, this new year's revolution challenge that you've taken on is amazing of you, I look forward to seeing the rest of your videos this month, they're very inspiring.
I love the idea that someone will find these. They might give them to someone else, never look at them again, or they might, while searching for the author on the internet, discover a whole community of amazing people they never knew existed. That's why I love this. And Nerdfighterdom.
Bye bye books! :( I've yet to read 'Paper Towns', I've read 'Looking For Alaska', I thought it was amazing! Does anyone else here take notes in books, fold corners over, underline sentences (paragraphs, pages!), let me know please..? Thanks Rosianna!
Thank you so much for this, Rosi. I had no idea what to do for that task and wanted to wait to see what you did. It's a day late, but I've got a collection of children's books which I've been keeping because of being silly and sentimental together and I've just got to write a note and decide where to leave them. I thought it would be a good idea to link to your youtube channel in the note as well, to help them see why I did it :)
wow, I wouldn't have been able to part with those books, especially a signed copy but I do hope the person who picked it up enjoyed them and is now a nerdfighter =) Oh and, your handwriting is beautiful.
Since you linked on twitter to the Channel 4 New Revolution I'm doing the get fit and so far have only completed the Day One challenge since I don't live close enough to anything for the Day Two one.
I gave a copy of one of my favorite books to a friend and my brother and I "gave away" compliments. We left post it notes all over town that said things like "You're amazing" and such.
Quick question for you, Rosianna. Like, you, I am a lover of books...physical, dead tree book, but I received a Kindle for Christmas. I noticed at the beginning of your video that you seem to have some sort of eReader as well. Do you like it? I ask because I'm not sure if I should keep mine or return it and buy some lovely old-fashioned paper books instead. Thanks! And thanks for all of your lovely videos. You are one of my favorites. :)
@MissTracyLord I have a Kindle and I also read lots of real paper books. I would keep the Kindle - after all, you can get paper books from libraries, but you can't get a Kindle. It's just really useful for things like holidays when you don't want your luggage to be too full up, or train journeys. Even if you read paper books far more, I'd still say it's a worthwhile thing to have, particularly if it was a gift. My Kindle is my baby, though, so of course I'd say that :)
@MissTracyLord i have a kindle and i love it. i actually think it makes me read faster because i can't see the end. and the page turn is really fast. it's really convenient for travel because it weighs less than 10 books. the only thing i miss the smell of books, so if you are really attached to the smell they you may want to return it, but if not, you should keep it :D
@MissTracyLord I love books too but since I'm a student my Kindle is just so much more convenient, and it's also easier to buy and read new books, which is always a good thing :)
@MissTracyLord I work in a bookshop and adore books - the feel and smell and physicality of them, how you can share them and pass them on like Rosianna has here, or lend them or.... you can't do that with a kindle. Plus, in the uk, amazon's profits rose last year by almost exactly the amount as Waterstones' fell (WS is like Barnes&N). Having been given one, i might keep it for travel maybe, but I couldn't use it to replace books, or bookshops would be gone, and that would be so sad.
@MissTracyLord I have an eReader, mostly because I read large books and as a guy can't carry round a massive book in a handbag, so I can read more because of it. Also as a student, a few pence saved over lots of books makes a real difference, if it is cheaper as a book, I get the book and vice versa. I think that whilst the physical book is part of the story, I enjoy the act of reading more than enough itself.
It's funny, as soon as you started talking about giving away books and mentioned that you had multiple copies of the ones you were about to give away, I knew you were talking about John's books :)
I wasn't able to go anywhere today to drop off my gift so I'm going to leave them in the airport tomorrow. I'm giving away a pair of Canada Olympic mittens that I bought a few weeks ago. Just before Christmas last year, I lost a pair of them, and a good friend gave me a replacement pair which was lovely and made me very happy. I'm flying back to school tomorrow, and an airport seems like a fitting place to leave them. I like that they could end up anywhere, with anyone. And Canada is cold!
You do have lovely handwriting Rosi, which means either the people that you said on Twitter used to criticize it are poor judges or that you've improved your skill since then. I wish I'd been the lucky one to find these since I've never had a signed one. But I will when my pre-order copy of the new book arrives!
You are so very kind and brave for giving away your books. I will definitely be doing this. I love the idea of doing something kind while being anonymous. I love the whole Robin Hood feeling that comes with it!
You have beautiful handwriting, and this is such a great idea. Leaving someone you will never meet something amazing to find, discover and explore. But I love my books far too much to give them away :(
This is such a brilliant video! You inspire me to do something just like that. Hope you enjoyed Sherlock!! (I've just finished watching it for the third time. SO good.) <3
This reminds me of how I left notes in all the John Green books at the bookstore about the vlogbrothers. I only wish I could find the people who found them...:)
When I was a Girl Guide we used to do a penny drive, and one day we covered an entire gym floor in a spiral pattern with pennies. The whole time we were laying out the pennies we sang that song "Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away, oh love is something if you give it away, you end up having more. It's just like a magic penny, hold it tight and you won't have any, lend it, spend it and you'll have so many, they'll roll all over the floor"
I love the style of the outside vlogs. It reminds of the amazingly edited photos on tumblr that i love <3 i am really looking forward to seeing more of what you have to offer in 2012
And good job giving books away! That's one think I don't think I could ever do. :) I'm also SO glad you are doing a video a day, it makes me happy! You've inspired me to do more videos!
@flaziola nerdfighter note, man. Making new nerdfighters. If they want to find me, they just have to google my name which is on all of the bookplates and at the bottom of the letter.
If I came across them I think I'd actually want to leave them for someone who doesn't already own them all. Although maybe I'd try hang around and watch who actually took them!
Additionally: I want to support independent book stores but I don't know where to find them. Do you have any favourites in London or know of any particular ones in the Tower Hamlets area of London?
I tried to come up with something today to give away, but it was a bust. I made homemade b-day cards w/ my kids for their little cousin's party tonight but we got snowed in. :( I'm fairly terrible with giving things. My creativity doesn't seem to reach that far.
@missxrojas It was a little upsetting, but it's an occupational hazard of living near a lake in the northern United States. My kids loved playing in the snow, though, so that was nice.
Such a great ting to do. But if their was a chance of knowing who read it and how he passed it to others to share, it would have been fun. Can you come up with an idea of doing some thing like that? Some thing like a Facebook page or a blog post or something similar...
@fahadforu I considered it but I wanted them to have an independent opportunity to read the book without really knowing anything else about me whilst they were reading. This YouTube and my Twitter are on the first page when you google me, so if they want to find me to let me know about picking up the books, they can.
I'm certain that I will loooove seeing your face every day this month! this was lovely, as per usual. and giving away your john green books? so much respect for you.
I gave away lots of things to my local charity shop today, which if I'm honest felt a bit of a cop-out so whilst I was down there I gave away some of my free time. I start my voluntary work next week. :)
I'm doing the TSN challenge as well. Today, even though it was raining quite heavily, I walked down the street to a little playground I used to go to when I was younger, and I left an old basketball there (inscribed with a nerdfighter note). My dad used to take me there to teach me how to play b-ball, so perhaps another kid will come along and pick up the game as well.
That was such a beautiful thing to do ! I would find it very difficult to give away my favorite books, especially special ones like John Green books ! Thank you for being a wonderful person and doing that ! I'm sure it has made someone smile today :) . I couldn't hear why tearing out the page of your diary was hard for you to do though ?!? Your handwriting is beautiful !
@xfifax3 Oh, sorry! Because I only have three (now two) pages of my diary left -- a diary I started in 2009 and so much has happened in that time that I've been clinging onto the diary, trying not to finish the pages and writing in tiny handwriting in order to make it last. I'm not quite ready to start a new one yet. In denial!
@missxrojas Aww, that is very sweet ! I know the feeling , I am forever clinging on to things that mean so much ! But when that diary does run out, you will start a whole new one, which it turn will be full of the events that make up the life of Rosianna, and will be just as wonderful as the one you have now ! Thank you for replying to me- it means so very much - I truly think you are great and always love watching your inspiring videos :) ! ~ Aoife (Ireland ) ♪
@missxrojas I read somewhere that Keats' will read: "My shelf of book divide equally amongst friends." but I cannot find that quote anywhere so I must be mistaken...
As a bookcrosser (bookcrossing-dot-com) I've been doing this kind of giveaways for many years... only that the books have an identification number so I am able to follow their journeys whenever the new readers update their journals (each book copy has a travelling journal). It amazed me when a book that I had left near my house in Spaun was found in Canada some months after! So readers, enjoy the books and share them afterwards, if you want to!
Such a lovely idea! Parting with books is difficult but incredibly meaningful, so I should do it more often. Giving someone a copy of your favourite book is such a personal, lovely thing to do. The opportunity to pass on something you've connected to and loved so much is a great one. :)
I hope the person who get the books gets an amazing experience with them aswell.
I really understand the meaning of certain copies of the same book, most of the time im scared to lend them out to people. Giving them away is a really hard thing to do, but i bet it made someones day better.
Such a nice thing to do! I couldn't hear some of what you were saying on the tube so you might have said this in the vid, but did you leave your contact details so you can find who took them? It'd be great to see!
@InHonorOfRowling ugh I know the sound was so bad, I'll try to transcribe it and put it underneath! No I didn't, but my name is in each of the books on the bookplates.
i think its really important when you've found something that means a lot to you and you pass that on. The best experiences people have is when they learn something, read something or listen to something they weren't expecting to. Enjoyed this video.
This was so nice!!! (three exclamation marks for great emphasis!) I hope they enjoy the books, although, who wouldn't?!
P.S (:P) you just reminded me of Sherlock! I still haven't seen it yet! I was gonna watch it today on iplayer (we don't have a tv that I watch) but I forgot.
Also this really reminded me of The Perks of Being a Wallflower where Charlie gives all his copies of his favourite books to his friends so they can enjoy them too. It's a lovely idea.
@missxrojas Wow thanks for replying :) Probably more exciting than it should be... I reread TPBW the other day and while it was still good I did kind of feel like it's the most meaningful at the point in your life when you can most identify with it, which I think I've passed. I'll always have a soft spot for it though.
I really had no idea what to do for the challenge today, or what to give away, after a bus ride to Brighton I decided on the way that when I got back I would leave my day rider bus ticket at the bus stop wedged into the timetable holder. unfortunately when I got back and I did this, a gust of wind caught it and blew it away, so I failed today :( I hope whoever got the books loves them. it was a great idea Rosianna :)
I'm so excited for this month of videos! Also your book parcel was so pretty and thoughtful, whoever found it is lucky - hopefully they love those books as much as you did.
Aw, man! I was at Waterloo around the time you sent that tweet. If only I could check twitter on my phone. I could've made a District Line journey, I think.
But probably better that these books are going to someone who's never had the pleasure of reading them before. I admire you for parting with them.
Loads of youtubers did daily vlogs in December so I was worried January would be awful by comparison, but then Rosi saved the day or the month more specifically! :}
I wish I had done something like this. I like the idea of leaving a package with a letter somewhere and having some stranger find it. But I just gave my friend an early copy of TFiOS that I got and told her not to spoil it.
Why so many of the same book? does the story change slightly in the editions? or is it just the cover that's different?
- I realise I probably sound really silly here but it's something I've always wondered about x

I gave away a book too, although it was only to my sister. (I say only like my sister isn't one of the most important people in my life... -_-)
You have lovely handwriting. :)

Your handwriting is BEAUTIFUL.
And good job giving books away! That's one think I don't think I could ever do. :) I'm also SO glad you are doing a video a day, it makes me happy! You've inspired me to do more videos!
Thanks for that!

@flaziola nerdfighter note, man. Making new nerdfighters. If they want to find me, they just have to google my name which is on all of the bookplates and at the bottom of the letter.

I am so jealous of both your awesome looks and of the awesomeness of your gift :] I gave away a bunch of things recently :] good stuff!

VLicious8704 1 month ago
@VLicious8704 Oh that's a gorgeous idea though. Sorry about the snow :(
missxrojas 1 month ago 2
@missxrojas It was a little upsetting, but it's an occupational hazard of living near a lake in the northern United States. My kids loved playing in the snow, though, so that was nice.
VLicious8704 1 month ago
Way to go!! That seems so tough. I'm too selfish atm to do anything like that, but you've inspired me!
OddmentTweak 1 month ago
I would have NEVER had the strength to give those books away! (or any of my books) CONGRATULATIONS!
AzuVlog 1 month ago 35
Such a great ting to do. But if their was a chance of knowing who read it and how he passed it to others to share, it would have been fun. Can you come up with an idea of doing some thing like that? Some thing like a Facebook page or a blog post or something similar...
fahadforu 1 month ago
@fahadforu I considered it but I wanted them to have an independent opportunity to read the book without really knowing anything else about me whilst they were reading. This YouTube and my Twitter are on the first page when you google me, so if they want to find me to let me know about picking up the books, they can.

Your handwriting is beautiful !

xfifax3 1 month ago
@xfifax3 Oh, sorry! Because I only have three (now two) pages of my diary left -- a diary I started in 2009 and so much has happened in that time that I've been clinging onto the diary, trying not to finish the pages and writing in tiny handwriting in order to make it last. I'm not quite ready to start a new one yet. In denial!
missxrojas 1 month ago
@missxrojas Aww, that is very sweet ! I know the feeling , I am forever clinging on to things that mean so much ! But when that diary does run out, you will start a whole new one, which it turn will be full of the events that make up the life of Rosianna, and will be just as wonderful as the one you have now ! Thank you for replying to me- it means so very much - I truly think you are great and always love watching your inspiring videos :) ! ~ Aoife (Ireland ) ♪

GatitaMica 1 month ago
Such a lovely idea! Parting with books is difficult but incredibly meaningful, so I should do it more often. Giving someone a copy of your favourite book is such a personal, lovely thing to do. The opportunity to pass on something you've connected to and loved so much is a great one. :)
evieeeox 1 month ago
I hope the person who get the books gets an amazing experience with them aswell.
I really understand the meaning of certain copies of the same book, most of the time im scared to lend them out to people. Giving them away is a really hard thing to do, but i bet it made someones day better.
PsykoDay 1 month ago
@PsykoDay Honestly there was a point, just when I was putting them down on the bench, that I was like... do I have to?
missxrojas 1 month ago
@missxrojas If it had been me I'd probably just run away with the books and hid somewhere I could read them. I do very much admire your strenght.

i think its really important when you've found something that means a lot to you and you pass that on. The best experiences people have is when they learn something, read something or listen to something they weren't expecting to. Enjoyed this video.
