Dan never loved anyone except himself, Larry says it best "you don't know the 1st thing about love, bcz you don't understand compromise". Larry knows what compromise is, bcz he fights for Anna, and even forgives her. He tries to understand her and the source of her infidelity. He was even kind enough to give him the address where Alice was, partly so he could get rid of him, but also for Alice's sake. However, he can't bring himself to be THAT kind, cz Dan is an arse so he takes a parting shot.

I can't remember if it happens in the film but in the play, Anna tells Dan that she loves Larry because he's kind, to which he responds, "Don't give me that, kind is dull, kind will kill you. Anyone can be fucking kind." The point being that "being kind" can be derided, but do so at your peril, because when a "kind" person is crossed in the way Dan did to Larry, the kind person's revenge will be brutal.

And I disagree with the couple of comments that bashed Julia Roberts - I thought she did very well in this role, which was quite harsher and more flawed and nuanced than her typical rom-com persona, and I was certainly more invested in her character than I was Jude Law's. Clive Owen and Natalie Portman definitely gave the best performances, though.
