I remember Soviet propaganda claiming that there were villages in the USSR populated by people approaching 160 years old. At the time, this propaganda was used in an attempt to illustrate the advantages of life under communism. Surely some of that propaganda still exists in print form today. It would be interesting to see it again.

The reality is that due the years of war and obligatory military service families would consantly lose the men in battle and give their newborn sons the names of martyrs, this way they honored the dead and they didn't bother to make a new birth certificates for the newborns.

Agree with 4x4jeepjeep.I don't see the point in prolonging the inevitable to such an extreme.Everyone wants to live to a ripe old age but you'll never be as healthy as you were when you were 18.After a while you get tired of life and it becomes a chore instead of a gift.Some people live wonderful lives into their ninties & early hundreds but too much past that and life loses it's meaning.Man has always battled to hold onto life for as long as he could,the reason?We are scared of what comes next.

I don't think life would lose it's meaning at that age, if it were a "chore" the ones living would simply chose to live no more. I think if you've managed to live over 105 then you've figured out how to stay alive, and how to die. I've heard so many stories of people reaching past a hundred who simply said they were ready, and then died. There are many people who aren't afraid of what comes next. Just because they recognize life as a gift and live it completely doesn't mean they're afraid.

Have you not heard of Shirali Mislimov, who lived for 168 years and died in 1973. He was a shepherd in Azerbaijan. He could remember the Crimean War and other events that took place in the early 1800s. How would he make it up. He probably could not read or write, so he must have atually been around at the time to know of these events.
