@risingskater you are correct about the timing of hetfield losing his voice. it was before the black album tour, he got his voice back a little bit at the beginning of the tour, but as the tour went on he lost it completely. sad story in the history of metal. one could argue that if hetfield doesn't lose his voice, Metallica dominates everything live until newstead leaves.
