I love how people talk about him being all quiet, sissy, whispery and stuff when this guy's voice is immortalised as rough in Beauty and the Beast lol, and as for being laughed out of hollywood... Thank Goooodd Robby Benson wasn't cast as Luke Skywalker! Lucas may have even been tempted to since Benson had some name value at the time (unfortunately), and Mark Hamill was an unknown. But again, how nice that horrible mistake wasn't made.

I'd think Lucas wanted more of a typical 70's looking ladies man for the role of Luke.

Benson was playing in sensitive roles then. He isn't really portraying a Jedi knight, nemesis of Darth Vader (sp?), ladies man (we thought he liked Leah at first), big shot pilot very well through whispering and whining w/ Solo/Ford.

No offense to Benson. He was good in Ode to Billy Joe and some other films where sensitivity was key to the role..

Benson had to be a possible final cut, but he doesn't "anger up" enough to show he has a tie to the dark past of his father. What's interesting is he does have a Hayden Christensen vibe, but Hayden is darker...though neither quite pull off a dark heroic figure.

Ralph Fiennes to me is one guy that is a perfect fit for the Star Wars universe, but they never used him--at least the Harry Potter crew saw what I saw.

Does anyone know how close Robby came to getting the Luke Skywalker role? As I mentioned in another post, I think he and Mark Hamil have by far the best grasp of the role. Here Benson even keeps going when he flubs with the "Organa Minor" line. Now THAT's ACTING!

Do you even wonder if people think that only because Hamil & Ford were cast? So that is what they are accustomed to seeing (the end product)? I wonder if SW would have been as successful with Benson & or a Nolte or Russell as Han Solo? Personally I think Russell with that cocky attitude (think Escape from NY) could have done a good job as solo. But Benson, while technically "right" for Luke's role (slim build,young) & probably a better actor than Hamil, I just can't "feel" him in that role.

It's fascinating to compare the readings of Hamill and Benson.

Ford is obviously taking his cue on how to play it from their performances.

Luke Skywalker is young and naive and also a dreamer with a noble heart. Benson accentuates the young/naive angle while Hamill accentuates the young/noble angle.

I've watched it several times and Benson is clearly playing it as a boy while Hamill played it as a young man. I think that that was the difference that landed Hamill the part.

He was great in The Chosen, but that's pretty much the only role I ever liked Benson in. Part of the problem here is the script was still garbage at the point of this audition. By the time they got to the final shooting script it was much more stripped down and clear. Still had some rough lines, but not so bad as this.

Mark Hamil had that spontaneousness (I don't even know if that is a word yet or not.) that really I think is what George Lucas was looking for.

I mean seriously...he does the voice of the joker, if that isn't spontaneous then I question my sanity.

I liked that Mark Hamil had that worried teen nature about him, he was rather young when he did the roll-call anyways.

Basically, Leia knew "the art of mind control" because she was supposed to be a Bene Gesserit. As the movie developed Lucas dropped most of the overtly fantastical things (with the exception of the Jedi and the Force, of course) and gave it the rough-edged, lived-in space western feel it's now famous for, but at this stage in development it was basically a Dune movie with a few names changed around to avoid getting sued.
