That's the Gibraltar Airport. I've landed there twice (not flying, just as a passenger). They also have to close down a main North/South road to land a plane. But nowhere else to put it. Gibraltar is on a very narrow peninsula, with tall hills all over it.

This would never work in the U.S., closing down a main road. Too much traffic & too many people who don't know what "STOP" means.

Wow, this is what is called a "missed approach". I'm in aviation and this made a very particular muscle spasm, which nearly created something in my drawers. This pilot did have to punch it to make it, you can hear him pour on power on final, then figures out it's not enough or to late, and juices it again right as he's over the sand.

The thrust reversers that sean patrick described aren't deployed @ touchdown but a little later on the landing roll. This pilot's an idiot and careless, dangerous.

It's probably the thrust reversers. At touchdown the pilots move a small lever on the throttle which opens panels on the engines directing thrust forward to slow the plane down. It helps conserve the plane's brakes.
