nutn im 16 and your point of alot of places in canada you could be attacked by cougar and bear is acurate. in western alberta alone i can name at least 3 places it could happen easily! (waterton, crowsnest pass, and exspecially nordegg!) frigin most remote place ive ever bin!
@SuperKyleharrison big knives have their place...deff. worth it to have. I find that i prefer a large knife 10" + over an axe in the area that I live.
Very true. As a Canadian backbacker I know first hand what you're talking about. My Esee Junglas saved my ass from a cougar on one of my overnight hikes. It took myself with my Junglas and my two friends with a cold steel bushman on a spear and a sk5 gurkha kukri to drive the predator away. Always be prepared.
@deathsky- a decent length knife stuck in the right place could kill a bear. if you google it ill bet you will find loads of instances were this has been the case.
When you blur out faces, do it while editing the video. If you pause when the bar is there, you can just click the X at the top left corner, and that person's face is right there.
a knife is NOT in any circumstances a valid tool for bear defense. Unless you live in an area with small black bears NEITHER IS A SMALL CALIBRE HANDGUN. Stab it, shoot it with something too small- forget it that bear is killing you dead-if youre real lucky youll damage it first but it will kill you its his instinct. We like and watch you cause youre reality based. So reality check- you shouldnt even suggest people carry a knife for bear. For bear country bring 12 gauge w/slugs or bearspray.
Cold Steel SRK 6 is that a good knife choice for my every time backpacking trip. average 25 mile 2 day trips? Just using for occassional wood splitting and emergency surival.
Dude I know that I'm late, but I've watched these vids over and over add just wanted to say that you ROCK! Thanks for all the reviews and extra info. We newbies really need all that we can get to remain safe and enjoy! So keep all the reviews coming!
Bears in Canada? Hell yeah. See them ALL the time. Fortunately they are predictable and the second they see you, they bolt. Good to have options for the one time though.
I know it's years later, but to all people reading this, what is your opinion on a tactical saw blade ( the double hand loop type ?) as opposed to the sawvivors? To me it seems like you need less bracing (loop under the log), and you distribute the work to both arms, but at the expense of your back perhaps. Just poking for opinions.
These videos are not just a gear checklist but on almost all pieces of kit he goes deeper into the POU for that item, an awesome reference, lol I watch these videos cross checking and sometimes it helps me remember or even think of something new, awesome
not to try to be a smartass or anything but ka-bar got its name when an immigrant trapper in the mountains was attacked by a bear and his gun jammed so he used his ka- bar to finish it off and then he wrote a letter to the company telling the story and thanking them but all they could make out of his allmost non-legible writing were the letters k,a,b,a,r, so they changed the name. i like ur vids they help alot
I'm always impressed with your videos and this series is certainly thorough. Love these choices of gear. I'm a lightweight backpacker but I can appreciate your prepardness for most predictable situations. For this kind of backpacking, I think you have great selection of safety gear to choose from as well as general equipment. Wishing you the best. I still would like to see a video on how you go into the back country in "Light" mode, carrying the least you go in with. Thanks for all the info.
Great video, as always Nutn. I've got a suggestion for you, Instead of a large knife for woodsplitting, traps and things like that, I use an East German surplus folding shovel with a sharpened edge and a factory serrated edge. All steel and wood, so weight could be an issue, however, i've found in more than adequate for most things. Digging, Splitting, cutting, it does wonders.
good stuff, i learned more here than watching bear grylls..lol I just bought the kelty 3900 trekker for weekender trekking and i hope it holds its name and quality. I all so bought the kelty grand messa 2 person tent and the quality is super amazing and ever since that first buy i now buy kelty products.
Hey nice vid. So I found a little airhorn a wile back and it works great. I use that insted of a whistle I know it's biger and the whistle will last longer but the airhorn is a lot nosier.
Thank you nutnfancy great vid. I'm a former member of the US Army and haven't been out in the woods in a while and I'm currently looking to get a system together asap and found the info very helpfull and a great refresher.

Great video channel. I just started watching a few weeks ago when i was looking for a 10/22 for my daughter. Great in site on your fist aids kits too (both levels).
shove a knife into a bear's throat? Nutnfancy I LOVE your vids but that has to be the single dumbest comment I have ever heard you make. The reason people bring bear mace, which has a 20-50 ft range depending which kind, is because a bear's arms are long enough and strong enough they can take your head from your shoulders with one swipe of their paw. You will not get close enough to use even a large knife unless you are ridiculously lucky. Bring bear mace! It's good weight!
@chushinryoku I some what agree but he is right, that is have KA BAR got it's name. The letter the bushman sent the company was written in horrible righting and really the only letters that could be clearly read was KA BAR. So it has been done not saying its easy, not saying it will happen but I would rather have something than nothing.
To secure my whistle, I use the plastic cord from a pair of earplugs. It holds together better than the snap lanyard you show, is lighter than any cord, while not posing a strangulation risk. They tend to break at about 10 lbs which is much more than the quick release one you show.
I used to work with an outfitter who catered to Black Bear hunters. It was seriously nerve-wracking work constantly wandering in heavy bear country, especially when carrying a gun is unacceptable according to our law. If you run into a bear with your 9 inch bowie and it is unhappy, even that is going to very rapidly feel inadequate. Its nice to have the knife for backup, but a big stick will give you a bit of range. A solid hit or two can sometimes turn an angry/inquisitive bear away.
@fuckiraq12 Hey partner, why not go get a smaller sized pack from Walmart and go on some local hikes by yourself. Not with friends, yourself. You'll pick up ideas from there and learn the ins and outs of outdoor travel. I picked this stuff up on my own while learning to learn from others. Backpacking is a great way to have fun while practicing non-impactting travel in the back country. Invest in a day pack, grab some empty plastic bottles, an apple, and granola, you can't help but have fun.
@fuckiraq12 I hear ya dude.. I'm in the same boat. Other half of my family is either too busy, or too out of shape. Nutnfancy's videos give me the resources to research and save a lot of time and money, so I can do this on my own as soon as I move out. I also love his philosophy videos, they're amazing. I admire you Nutnfancy, and someday I hope we'll get out on a run n' gun or backpacking trip! I'm going to be a cop later on. Stay sharp fellas. :)
You have some good advice, but I am shocked that you would suggest people bring an inflatable boat but not a light weight hatchet. A hatched can be one of the greatest tool in your survival arsenal. IMO the large knifes and saws you bring could be be ditched if you took a hatchet. I watched your ax vid, and your technique seems a bit lacking which may account for your dislike of the tool. If you're concerned about weight dump the full sized frying pans (take 1 if your fishing), boat, etc.
Hey Nutn, I'm just wondering, do you have a system for lightweight backpacking? I've just delved into it. But in any case, lightweight backpacking or not, do you ever really need those bear killer knives? haha
love the videos but just to avoid any confusion KA BAR is an acronym for Knife Attatchment Browing Automatic Rifle. the Squad automatic riflemen in WWII were not issued bayonets and needed a fighting knife to fill the void

Thanks for the great review and instructions. A group of 4 of us will be going remote north of Jasper this fall, for about a week. This vid has shed some light on some gear, thanks
"Thanks for the great review and instructions." Very much welcome and thanks for watching! Wish I could hang out in the comments more but I'm maxxed making new vids like my "Concept USK." Peace.
@nutnfancy Hey Mr. Nutnfancy, where did you get that drawstring sack for your sawvivor? I've been trying to find one everywhere and I've been unsuccessful so far.
@nutnfancy hey nutn i was wondering what u feed allie on ur backpacking trips. I was interested in bringing my dog duce along on my next trip into vermont and need to know the most efficent way of feeding him. thanks
i normally take a gerber BMF, it is big and heavy, but not to heavy, and a e-tool, and a wave, some times i take a camp axe but thats only 25% of the time.
ok if you get attacked by a bear or a cougar you better be good with a knife if that's all you have and you better hope that you dont get busted for killing in a nation forests
I can't get enough of your videos! These are great and really gives me a real world look at camping, hiking and backpacking that I would otherwise not know. Much appreciated!
great collection of gear... can tell you've been doing this forever. Everyone should have a pealess whistle and a good mirror if they're adventuring outdoors, and I like to carry a small lightweight roll of orange tape to leave a trail SAR can track just in case-- if you have to move. Tying a lil piece on here and there increases your footprint when they're searching. Also, if you're disoriented and start seeing your tape again, you're walking in circles. FYI for readers.
hey man , love all your videos on everything, learned ALOT from them, can you maybe doe a video on what you need in a survival pack, i have a 45 liter backpack with i think i will need, can you shoot a video for us "survivalist", like what we need in time of survival
no ka-bar does not come from kill a bear it was in 1820 when a hunter came across wounded bear with jammed gun and a blade witch he used to kill a bear and he sent a gratefull letter to knife smiths what was written in bad English but the signature saied K a bar and knife smiths where grateful and gave a compani ka-bar name. his sentence of ka-bar coming from a killing a bear is true but ka-bar meaning a bear killing is wrong.
haha, finaly someone who understands the failure of velcro in snow! I would always hate it when I went into the snow and had to adjust my coat and it wouldn't stick.
Heck Cougar attack/bear attacks even happen in my stomping grounds of northern California/eastern Nevada. Yes i always have a a form of defense with me.
Watching a video like this is pretty overwhelming for somebody like me that has no real backpacking background and would like to start doing it lol :S. It looks like I need to spend a lot of money.
Wen I go out in the woods I take ma Brusletto Hunter with me.
btw Brulsetto is a Norwegian brand I live In norway and it has a classic Norwegian Design it is very large and are meant to slice up deer. IF you run over one in ex Ebay u Should buy it
bear atacks are rare but the do happen...when camping/hiking most happen because food is improperly stored..or if ur find a grizilys "bear pile" if you stick arourond your gonna be part of it. cougar attacks are more common and they are goiung after you, not because the are courious, but they view you as a food source. there has never (in canada at least)been a negative bear incounter with a group of 5 or more.
im not saying that it cant happen or humans aren't a prey option for bear or couger. im saying that they will, 99.999% of the time, not mess with you cause they ARE more afraid of us they we are of them. plus we are a larger prey thus making them expend alot of energy taking us down, in there mind. make your self known in the bush and you souldn't have any problems, granted the animal isn't starving, sick, pregnent or seperated from there young.
thers an old mountain man saying "give a man a knife in the wilderness and he can survive, give him an an axe and he lives like a king" i do undestand why on your type of backpacking wuldnt merit it thow lol
yeah ur right except my grandfather was backpacking at blood mountain and got attacked by a black bear so your right? brilliant comment? you know others bears like brown bears in alaska and other areas have actually been known to stalk hunters and other human beings? please do your research.
you obviously have no idea how often cougars see a human and stalk them to eat. happens quite often out here in CA. since they banned hunting them here they are no longer afraid of people, and now we are merely 2 legged food.
you have a very good vocabulary and you really sound like you know what youre doing which i presume you do and that whole good weight bad weight thing i had never heard about it until you discussed it good vid
its true. A man who was an imagrant to the USA wrote a letter to the knife company, and in the letter the only things they could make out were the letters K A BAR Kill A BeAR
i completely agree with you on keeping a multitool in a sheath/pouch. I was hiking with my brand new leatherman skeletool cx and lost it somehow. i had it in my jacket pocket, and i know if i had it on my belth in a sheath i wouldnt have lost it.
heck,i don't claim to be an expert at anything but even topics i know quit a bit about i will still research and be grateful for anything i can learn or help others with.i think the goal should be to learn while having fun and bickering with someone about what they choose to use is a waste of time after all they are using it NOT me.THANKS, NUTN!!
with the whistle, i have the habbit of it being around my neck along with a full size compass (usually silva compass) so ensues i will have means of signal and nabvigation on me, combined with a pocket survival kit which i have secured to my belt... i think this woks well in my opinion as 'just in case' scenario
nutn im 16 and your point of alot of places in canada you could be attacked by cougar and bear is acurate. in western alberta alone i can name at least 3 places it could happen easily! (waterton, crowsnest pass, and exspecially nordegg!) frigin most remote place ive ever bin!

@nutnfancy hey nutn i was wondering what u feed allie on ur backpacking trips. I was interested in bringing my dog duce along on my next trip into vermont and need to know the most efficent way of feeding him. thanks

i normally take a gerber BMF, it is big and heavy, but not to heavy, and a e-tool, and a wave, some times i take a camp axe but thats only 25% of the time.

ok if you get attacked by a bear or a cougar you better be good with a knife if that's all you have and you better hope that you dont get busted for killing in a nation forests

hey nutn you were talkin bout a whistle....my new pack has a little whistle built into the pack strap. very useful for emergency whistling
MrLaxaddict1 2 years ago
great collection of gear... can tell you've been doing this forever. FYI for readers.

no ka-bar does not come from kill a bear it was in 1820 when a hunter came across wounded bear with jammed gun and a blade witch he used to kill a bear and he sent a gratefull letter to knife smiths what was written in bad English but the signature saied K a bar and knife smiths where grateful and gave a compani ka-bar name. his sentence of ka-bar coming from a killing a bear is true but ka-bar meaning a bear killing is wrong.

Watching a video like this is pretty overwhelming for somebody like me that has no real backpacking background and would like to start doing it lol :S. It looks like I need to spend a lot of money.

btw Brulsetto is a Norwegian brand I live In norway and it has a classic Norwegian Design it is very large and are meant to slice up deer. IF you run over one in ex Ebay u Should buy it
Tardjei939 2 years ago
bear atacks are rare but the do happen...when camping/hiking most happen because food is improperly stored..or if ur find a grizilys "bear pile" if you stick arourond your gonna be part of it. cougar attacks are more common and they are goiung after you, not because the are courious, but they view you as a food source. there has never (in canada at least)been a negative bear incounter with a group of 5 or more.
hobbyist22 2 years ago
im not saying that it cant happen or humans aren't a prey option for bear or couger. im saying that they will, 99.999% of the time, not mess with you cause they ARE more afraid of us they we are of them. plus we are a larger prey thus making them expend alot of energy taking us down, in there mind. make your self known in the bush and you souldn't have any problems, granted the animal isn't starving, sick, pregnent or seperated from there young.

if u r attacked by a bear or couger , u were doin somthin wrong. jus lettin u no. they dont want to b around us at all. even for food.
jube1123 2 years ago
yeah ur right except my grandfather was backpacking at blood mountain and got attacked by a black bear so your right? brilliant comment? you know others bears like brown bears in alaska and other areas have actually been known to stalk hunters and other human beings? please do your research.
eminempkr 2 years ago
you obviously have no idea how often cougars see a human and stalk them to eat. happens quite often out here in CA. since they banned hunting them here they are no longer afraid of people, and now we are merely 2 legged food.
ww1enfield 2 years ago
jUBE1123 To think humans are not considerable prey options for bears, and cougars is ignorant at best.
Do some research, and you will find that you should always take into consideration, and prepare for an encounter with a predator.

with the whistle, i have the habbit of it being around my neck along with a full size compass (usually silva compass) so ensues i will have means of signal and nabvigation on me, combined with a pocket survival kit which i have secured to my belt... i think this woks well in my opinion as 'just in case' scenario
