My grandfather taught my sister and I this song in 1942 I was five years old. Our sur name is Dotson and my grandmothers maden name was Hudson. Pretty much English.
On a front porch swing on an Oklahoma farm. I rememberded every word and my Grandfather.
He died shortly after. He was a wealthy man his treasures I was denied. But he taught no one else "Bahara Allen".
I love this version. It is the truest I've heard to the old folk song, and it is easy to understand the lyrics. The simplicity fits the spirit of the tune.
Thank you, Mr. Sondahl, love the way you do this ballad. Sounds more authentic to the period. Listen to Greensleeves by the King's Singers, think you would like it. Maybe you would consider doing a version of Greensleeves.
I enjoy this version. I teach 12th grade language arts, and I used my new LCD projector to show this video to my classes when I taught Medieval ballads. I hope the performer doesn't mind. I mean it as a compliment. I'm also a guitar finger picker and string player. I enjoy the performance on that level, too. It's not super difficult, but it's nice.
That's fine with me. Youtube implies public use... Most of my other guitar work is more complex, but you don't want to overpower a ballad with fingerwork...
one of the best versions on youtube. very simple and traditional. My favorite version is from the classic english film " A Cristmas Carol" starring Alistair Simm. good job
AMEN to that! I fell in love with this song from Alastair Sim's version of "A Christmas Carol".....it pains me in that short scene that they stop singing, because they were singing it BEAUTIFULLY!!!! Glad to see that there are others that appreciate some of the obscure stuff I do!

Thank you for the memory from me. I remember my mother singing this with my father playing the guitar back in the 1960s.

Thanks for the memory. I have lately in my old age, looking up songs my Mother sang me as a girl. This was about 1945-52...

Greensleeves is my big Youtube hit (couple hundred thousand views), but I didn't sing with it... You can find it searching Sondahl and Greensleeves.
