  • This video is popular on Bogota

  • tell me about dat cab. i want.

  • @moyersshred Avatar Traditional 2x12! It is for sale.

  • @zombielolocaust i pm'd you

  • I am on the odd a part of Youtube once more.

  • What amp were you using in this video?

  • @HaistaPaska92 Heh, really? Splawn Competition.

  • @zombielolocaust well yeah it was a Splawn head. I meant the cabinet underneath

  • @HaistaPaska92 Aha! Avatar Traditional, loaded with one Eminence Governor and one Man-O-War. These were the speakers Splawn used to recommend. Thanks for watching, HP.

  • @zombielolocaust Thanks. Nice video BTW, great playing and no bs

  • what a good day when receiving music gear.

  • this sounds reeeeeally good

  • awesome video im getting a quick rod and matching cab saturday, killer playing

  • To all my fellow guitarists...there's NOTHING like the feeling of opening your new amp fresh out of a box with wrapping and TEMPORARILY quenching your GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) until you start thinking bout your next purchase....enjoy.

  • Oohh, Cut that fuckin box!! LMAO

  • i never knew its ok to touch valves...is it ?

  • @rtfan13 I think, like with lightbulbs, a greasy fingerprint can heat up and cause damage. But this set rocked for over a year, which is good for Mullards. I suppose my hands are clean. :D

  • @zombielolocaust dats cool i thought you had to be ultra carefull with them

  • Nice playing Gray. I used to build tube amps and did the hi gain stuff. I have to say the Splawn sounds darn good. Gets the Y.J.M. sound very close like his old Marshall sounds. The home built guitar sounds good too. Does the amp have an FX loop?

    Cheers...

  • @5150Nobozos Oops, looks like I missed this. Yeppers, it's got an effects loop, but you can genuinely bypass it, so I usually try to do that to keep it as organic sounding as possible. Thanks for taking a look.

  • you touched the tubes, with your bare skin. big no no.

  • Fucking great video man, loved watching it!

  • I played one at Guit Center (used) it blew my mind the tone coming out of the thing. Have never forgotten about it.

  • Зверюга! Так жадно целофан рвал =) Усил мне понравился.

  • This was great...the watch cracked me up...thanks for letting us check your fun day out !

  • That video was fuggin' awesome!

The ONLY thing that was missing would've been you standing in front of some huge 100" Speaker and then use a Metallic pick to strum your first note!

[à la Back To The Future]

Awesome tones & nice playing as well!

    Thanks for sharing with us

    Scott

  • @Farout5150 Glad you likey. I got it sounding even better once I learned what the knobs did. :D

  • @zombielolocaust Very kewl, sir. Keep up posted!

    Take care

    Scott

  • Wow. REALLY impressed with this amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • can it get nice clean tones as well

  • @jossrules123456789 Good enough if you wind the guitar volume back. Never sparkly, though. After all, it always has overdrive on. Check my "Clean and Crunch" video.

  • @jossrules123456789 They clean up pretty good especially in First Gear.

  • great video, there's nothing like the feel of receive new gear, isn't it? cool sound, cool licks.

  • cool video. you are as weird as me. amp sounds great. looks even cooler. looks are important, when choosing women and amps, not books though

  • that is the most beautiful thing i've ever heard...

  • @MrJDinop That gave me a smile. You should hear it after I learned what the knobs do!

  • alcatraz tone! pretty great at getting the right kinda saturation that retains note definition for leads and chordal glory.

  • this video is great..makes me I did it with mine! nice!

  • I dont know why but there is something exciting about "new toy unpacking" clips like this....I just ordered a splawn nitro today and am really excited about it

  • Damn packing peanuts!!!! Agh!!!

  • I ordered my Splawn Quickrod and now I know what I am expecting when it comes delivered! Great video.....I cant wait to get mine now.....tick tock.....few more weeks.

  • i think if you put this in the tags section in your video description yt:crop=16:9 it will make the video fill the whole of the screen.

  • Your speaker cable looks rock solid, I'm obsessed with it! :P What brand?

  • Ha ha, it's just a Live Wire! I'm suspicious of premium cables and just wanted the thickest copper for the least money, so it's a 12-gauge donkey choker with giant Neutrik plugs. :)

  • are they making mullard again didnt they go out of business in 82?

  • Russian remakes.

  • wow thats awesome..

  • Splawn amps :) , own a 2007 QR, Scott and crew make awsome amps, cabs, all there product,

  • Just like Christmas morning eh? Awesome dude just awesome. How well was the amp biased? Does it run hot outta the box? Thanks for the video, great sounds.

  • Yeah, it still gives me that feeling when I watch this video! I don't have a bias probe, but I hear these are shipped a little cold. 60% maybe? Someone smarter than me will know. Thanks for coming by!

  • This video made me buy a Splawn! Scott Splawn sets the bias between 30ma & 32ma for EL34 tubes. The plate voltage is 490-500.

  • Thank you guys for the info, my search still continues for my dream rig. This may have joined the list.

  • If only I had the money....

    Nice amp!

  • Yngwie rocks, great tone man... nice playing too!

  • This head rocks man, is that straight into it? I think I want to kick my JTM 45 to the curb

  • That's straight in, yeah, no boosts or effects. I like a really simple setup with no toys. I'm sure the 45 is a bit gain-light, but it's meant to be a lovely amp!

  • Rockin dude, to bad its 2k, no modern head is worth that, to me anyway. Guess its time to put a master vol in the JTM. If I can get more grit out of the pramp stage I should be good to go.

  • Well this is the Competition, only $1500. :)

  • Only? heh heh, well its a stellar sounding head and Im sure you are happy with it and thats all that matters right.. peace

  • $1,500.00 shipped to your door and well worth every penny.

  • That tone is totally bitchin', you've nailed the tone from hold on by Yngwie bang in the head!

  • Cool video! Great tones, too. I think I might need to get one of these.

  • Use it in good health buddy,

    God bless

  • I love how there were no words.... this video rocked.

  • It's so awesome getting new gear in the mail.

  • any of you guys have a combo you'd recommend comparable to a Splawn or Soldano?

  • for christ sakes use a fucking box cutter to open than mother fucker up.

  • what do u think about soldano hot rod 50+

  • Very nearly bought one blind before finding Splawn. But didn't get on too well with its big brother, the SLO, which was all I could demo.

  • Man I can't decide to get the Nitro or the Quick Rod.

  • Well where do you want your midz? Down low for the chugga-klang or up high for the bew-naw-deedle-widdly?

  • Not really sure, but I like the tone Eddie Van Halen had on the first two albums, Van Halen and Van Halen II. I like a tight punchy, ballsy sound.

  • Easy. Quick Rod. That's the modded-Marshall monster. The Nitro is modern voiced, for crushing brutal riffs. It's not aimed at that classic sound.

  • check out mojave amp site or roccaforte amps.

  • check out the MOJAVE web site and go under sound clips for the PEACEMAKER - best I've heard for early van halen sound- (I think clips 3, and 4 are van halen demos)

  • wheres the gain and volume set on this clip, I hope this wasnt asked before as I havent read all the comments, great tone and playing dude, carry on.

  • Like this video.

  • This has convinced me to get one of these amps (once I get enough money)

  • Remember to send my commission!

  • How come these heads look so vintage as if their straight out of the 50's

  • Well, they are custom made afterall. Mine's a gonna be grrrreen.

  • hey, what kind of power lamp are they installing in these? I might want to change mine out for a green one when mine arrives.

  • What is the name of the first yngwie song you play right at the 2:40 mark? thanks.

Also, what is the diff between your splawn and the quickrod?

  • "Hold On" from Odyssey. :)

The Competition has the distortion channel of the Quick Rod, no clean, and is 50 watts switchable down to 30 in triode (the QR is 100 switchable down to 50). We've heard from Splawn that they sound more aggressive than the QR just because there's no clean channel in the circuit.

  • Kinda like the Soldano HotRod or Avenger?

Is it not possible to build an amp with two entirely diff circuits so as to not have that problem? or would that require to much mass or something? Please excuse my ignorance on amp building....lol

  • I have a new shell coming from Scott soon, i have one of the FIRST built Comp's with the input jack on the front NOT centered, its LOWER and without the MODE selector switch on the front, DUDE, THIS AMP is THEE BEST amp Ive EVER PLAYED thru or OWNED, Im FREAKING OUT AT HOME BLASTING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Love your clip brotha!

I will have to post one too soon once I get the new shell.

  • This is still my favorite Splawn video! I compared all of the amps I was trying out before I bought my Splawn Quick Rod to the tones you are getting here, and nothing came close to Splawn. What song are you playing starting at 4:48?

  • You're always so kind, JD, thanks so much. That was just some random chordage with the guitar's volume rolled back. It's vaguely Hendrixy I suppose?

  • That was another one of the tones that sold me on getting a Splawn. I still wake up some nights in a cold sweat after I had the reoccuring nightmare that I bought the Marshall JVM instead of my Splawn Quick Rod.

  • How does your Yamaha DG80 compare with the Splawn?

  • Heh, well, I still have a soft spot for the Yamaha (mine is a DG100-212) but after the Splawn, modeling amps seem like toys I must say. They sound like low-bitrate mp3s of cool guitar tones where a real amp like the Splawn just gives you giant, raw tone. I was apprehensive about dealing with tubes and all their issues but I can never go back!

  • I lol'd at 2:14

  • Did you have to bias the amp or just pop the valves in and play?

  • Fuck me! Great playing too.

  • This amp is sick! Thanks to your 2 videos Im getting a splawn, but Im getting the Quickrod because I need a clean channel.

  • Yeah! Splawn and some Malmsteen crystal ball!!!!

sounds great man... what guitar were you using?

  • I think at this point I was using an Ibanez I built from parts, the one in my 'Bedroom Volume Splawn' video. But it sounds great with the Malmsteen Strat too! Cheers.

  • drool

  • Great video, always exciting getting new gear.

I dig the tone, nice playing too! :)

  • Such a cosmetically beautiful amplifier.

  • Thanks. Splawn lets you choose your own tolex, piping, chassis, grill, headbox etc. I spent a while mocking this up in Photoshop first to see what would work. Love it.

  • hey what is their site cause i cant find it?..

    appreciate it.

  • Do a search for splawn. If that doesn't work, try splawn amps.

  • Awesome movie, awesome amp :D Can you tell me the exact gear you used in the video?

  • I'm afraid I cannot. Being fresh out of the box, I didn't know how the three gears & two overdrives worked yet. I was just pressing buttons. :/

    They're all good though!

  • Now that is funny; because I still watch your video to copy your different tone settings. What are you playing starting at 4:48?

  • great tone! I never heard of Splawn before... they seem like a great manufacturer.

which guitar is this? sounds fat!

  • I bought a Splawn Quick Rod after watching this and other Splawn videos without even getting to play through one first. I can not say enough good things about my Splawn and Scott Splawn's company. I have owned a Mesa Dual Rectifier and Marshalls before, plus I have played through other things. My Splawn is in a different league than anything that I have ever plugged into before. Splawn amps have Serious PRO TONE.

  • hahaha i really liked this vid, it's about time someone made an interesting unpacking vid Amp sounds great :)

  • Wait for it.. waaait for it. Rofl at the stop watch! :P

  • Hi,

I've checked out splawn's amps on the web due to the f/x loop bypass. Can you let me know how that works.

  • Hey Fred. It's a switch on the back of the amp, can't be done via footswitch (if that's what you wanted to know.) Thanks for coming by.

  • I watched your vid again, you kill me! Whoever does your editing is a genius. I felt like I was watching a reality show. Great job.

  • I agree. When you get your new Splawn try setting the Overdrive volume at around 9:30 or 10:00 and stick a volume pedal in the loop to control the actual volume. I got to speak with Scott Splawn when I called and was told they have plans to add another volume knob on future models since so many people are doing this. I bought a Avatar 2 x 12 cabinet after watching Zombielolcaust, and they installed a V30 & Celestion G12H Heritage also. It is like a large portable combo with thump & TONE.

  • Thanks Zoom, appreciate the kind words.

But wait -- whoever does my editing? You think I have PEOPLE?! It's all me on my lonesome I'm afraid. :'(

  • what's up with the watch part.. :S

  • He is waiting for the tubes to warm up before engaging the standby switch.

  • so the competition is the same gain stage/voicing as the quickrod with the exception of a clean channel ?

  • Correct! (And it's 50 watts; the Quick Rod is 100.)

  • thanks for that. I thought it had the half power switch as well. Great amp nonetheless! one of the best I have heard as of yet! The nitro is really grabbing my attention as well. Damm these amps are badass !

  • Oh, I am SOOO getting a Quickrod! I have a Dual rec right now. It's not a bad amp by any means, but the tone is not really my thing. It sounds great for what it does, but I want old school like that. I have a 1960BX cab with Greenbacks, so it sounds like it would be a great match! Thanks for the vid. You just gave me GAS!

  • Great video, you should make tv commercials for Splawn.

  • Like watching a kid open a new toy on Christmas morning. Thank you Santa Splawn! :)

    I want one too.

  • That sounds to good man

    Beautiful amp!!!

  • What power setting are you using in this video? It sounds amazing and I don't think that you are using a lot of volume either.

  • This is full power (Pentode/50 watts) throughout. Bear in mind YouTube shaves a bit of the brightness off. :)

  • If I could put the Quick Rod on 50 watts, plug in my Strat, and get a sound close to yours in the video I would be grinning from ear to ear. I might be able to loss some of the brightness by using the EQ on my Rocktron Xpression unit. My nearest Splawn dealer will sell me a new Quick Rod for $1800.00 out the door. He has the Quick Rod in stock and it would be a couple month wait if I ordered the Competition. This is also factoring into my decision to go with the Quick Rod. Thanks once again.

  • I got my Splawn Quick Rod and I played it at church for the first time today. The amp is in a different league than anything I have played before. My old Mesa Dual Rectifier and my Marshall Jubilee head can't compare to the Splawn. The Splawn does not have any bad sounds and it is extremely versitale, and extremely quiet for a tube amp. The Worship music was really special today and I believe that the amps amazing tone played a part in that.

  • how much did that cost?

  • I thought the orange Marshall sounded better. That sounds really good though.Alot like a Peacemaker.

  • Its like christmas morning!

  • Thanks for the information. I do not have a Splawn dealer in my area.

  • Haha I heard before you started to playt Malmsteen that you were close to his sound. (The tone, not music).

    I sounds really good.

  • How is the high gain noise level? The amps in some other Splawn videos have a lot of high gain hiss, like bacon frying. I do not hear any noise in your video.

  • It's possible they have old tubes maybe. I feel the noise level is very low. I need to be at the top of 3rd Gear OD2 to get any sort of real hiss.

  • Splawn comanda!!!!

  • SEXY!

  • But what did you think of the amp?

  • Dude! wtf? that's what I think about the amp :D

  • how does it clean up on gear one?

  • the ywngiwe sounds mean through that amp!

  • Such a beautiful crunchy tone, congratulations!

  • lucky!

  • Dude, I have GOT to thank you. I've been playing YJM Fenders for a while and I NEEDED to find THE tone! And thanks to you, I'm going out and getting the Splawn Competition...this is what Marshall is SUPPOSED to sound like.

This vid was like guitar porn! 5 and 3/4 stars!!

  • I love to hear this sort of thing! Go buy and enjoy. Glad I could help you discover Splawn tone.

  • I think the tone is wondefull. This amp sounds like a classic marshall. When I hear your style of playing I can't help but think of a high gain amp like Soldono or 5150 which might match better with your playing. I don't really know it's just a little strange hearing those neo classical metal runs with a classic sound.

The amp looks like a winner though.

  • After I read what I wrote it almost sounds like I'm insulting you. I wasn't!! I just dont usally hear that style with this sound is all I meant.

  • Ha! No offense taken! To be fair though, Yngwie uses only Plexis, so I don't know why neo classical should sound weird with a classic tone. It is perhaps the upper mids focus of the Splawn that changes the flavor; the amp has masses of gain, but it's not all scooped and chuggy so it's perceived differently. Demo'd the Soldano SLO - too stiff and raw for me; 5150 was oddly muddy, and jeez, everyone has one of those! Love my Splawn. Now sounding even better than this with a Celestion Gold and V30.

  • Watthiman: When I hear your style of playing I can't help but think of a high gain amp like Soldono or 5150 which might match better with your playing.

Bro, the Splawn amps ARE high gain amps. Well, to be fair, The Competition isn't high gain per se. But it IS capable of screaming tones. However, the Splawn Nitro is THE monster high gain amp...right up there with all of the other boutique bests out there. Just search YouTube for Splawn Nitro and hear the shred.

  • very good!!!!!!! 5 stars

  • Isn't that the most beautiful tone. Loved the Yngwie "Judas" and "Rising Force" bits. Seriously, this thing sounds like it would rival a Dumble. Are you playing this at an extremely high volume on this clip?

  • Quite the opposite! If it's indicative of anything, the master volume is third from the right. If you like the tone here, you'll love it opened up. Everything kind of rounds out. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words.

  • You're very welcome, sir! No doubt that this amp has an amazing sound, but a lot of this sound is due to your hands and technique. You are a brilliant player (and yes, I do know what I'm talking about here). Unbelievable that it has that "huge" sound at a nominal volume like that. Me likes. And me wants one. I need to convince me wife that me NEEDS one! LOL!!! This thing absolutely DEVASTATES my JCM-900 (and the JCM-900 sounds pretty damn awesome). But there's no comparison, really.

  • Hi..I just bought a quickrod on ebay instead of a marshall reissue 1987x reissue...Do you think I made the right choice? What speakers do think it will sound best with..I have some v30's and a cab with greembacks....thanks

  • If the Marshall was not modded by a genius (Bray/Splawn/Cameron etc.) then heavens yes, you made the right choice. You have more gain than you know what to do with, and three gears with their own flavors. Speakers: go with that Greenback cab, lots of QR folks love them. V30s are a notorious mismatch, their big upper-mids hump on top of the QR's upper mids hump is too much for most. Congrats and enjoy!

  • After viewing Splawn vid numerous times will temporarily assign to "Dated" listing. To satisfy Tuber's demand for New and Different Viewing for stagnant shut-ins I suggest...a Day 1 Alessandro American Coonhound chronicle (with NOS tubing)including stopwatch and gloveage. Feel free to utilize previously sent R8 for testing purposes.Peace.

  • Would have liked to have seen vinyl or latex gloves used when handling the Big Bottle Mullards...:) Do you break in your speakers? If so, HOW? No new Vids lately...? Am considering REMOVING your name from YouTubia Members-in-Good-Standing Roster..:( Peace.

  • I post videos of me wearing vinyl and latex under a different username.

I break in my speakers by using them. This set took five months to loosen up. In this vid they are brand new and a little hard.

A new video was recorded recently, demoing some cool pickups, but on review it was discovered that my face was quite drunk and unsuitable for broadcast.

  • hey zomebieolocaust, i've been recently looking at splawn amps and i'm extremely amazed by them, and i would just like to ask, from your personal use, is your amp good for classic rock/bluesy tones too? or are splawns more for hard rock and metal?? ty :)...

  • Look at me, not replying to this for ages. Sorry!

I think that depends on what you're calling classic rock and blues. 1st Gear will get you early Van Halen and AC/DC, 2nd will get you blues-era Gary Moore, say. But if you're talking about Zeppelin and BB King, I have no idea.

  • That Splawn sounds real nice...What cab?

  • Thanks Miko. Just a simple workin' man's Avatar cab, which I bought empty and loaded with an Eminence Man-o-war and a Governor. (A notoriously good combination for Splawns.)

  • Sounds great!

  • TODD! Todd Duane watched my video!

    *not worthy*

I did wonder when your perpetual amp search would lead you to Splawn. I think it'd be a great match.

Thanks for coming by, made my day.

  • LOL! yea they are great amps

  • nice head man! you should grab an overdrive pedal for that thing and run the drive on it around 9 o'clock...that thing will scream!

  • LOVE the stopwatch for heatup , blastoff. GREAT VID! Lots of thought and editing skills. Avatar cab? Will send you a Les Paul Reissue for Total Tone and to slow you down so we can feel your notes. Peace.

  • Will be gratefully received - the Splawn loves mahogany. I shall be in touch with my address for home delivery, and a photograph of my special purpose.

  • maple fretboard on the axe I hear???

    Is this the competion?

I have a NITRO coing soon.

Great tone my friend, and cool way you did the video, KUDOS!

  • Maple fretboard, yep, it's the Ibanez with the face on it that's in some of my other videos (though this was before I swapped the Evolution in the bridge out for a Duncan Custom). And yeah, the Competition head.

Congratulations on the Nitro. I remember when I was waiting all those weeks for my Splawn to be built, I was surfing all the You Tube clips like crazy too. :)

  • Maple fretboard and evolutions! The Evolutions are INSANE on my Vai jem, now I play Weeping Willow Lutherie axes, your right Im looking at clips and drooling...lol. Good luck to you and great playing as well bro.

  • Nice amp !

  • Your a trip bro. Great tone

  • AMAZING! congrats man thats an amazing head

  • Awesome playing!! Love hearing bits and pieces from classic 80's tunes from Dokken, Lynch, Yngwie, etc!

How is that amp now that you've had it for a while? Can it do early VH type tones at low volumes?

  • sweet editing. feels real.

  • Cool!Congratulation!

  • OH OH WHAT IS IT WHAT IS IT!! ITS.....ITS....ITS...another box lol!!!

  • The tremolo tip was super nice, and after seeing this, I am going to have to kill you and take the amp for my own... UNLESS you can tell me what the riff at 4 minutes is, because it's 2:30am and I'm losing my mind trying to remember where I've heard it.

  • This is a toughie, but I don't want to die right before Christmas. I'll have to spill it. That would be "Crystal Ball" from Malmsteen's essential 1988 album, Odyssey. Now take that chainsaw back to Home Depot.

  • A wise decision! I thank you. AMERICA thanks you, son.
