  • pick playing on" so far away "--all wrong-- its a classic finger magic technic song

  • Great to see him use a pick for a change.

  • I remember watching this particular show..incredibly tight with the band. Check out how much fun they are having with the legend.

  • This is top ten stuff at Letterman.

  • Yeah you can here this is not Dire Straits,, :D

    Knopfler is still good, ofc.

  • jack sonni is way better then that guy with the yellow guitar

  • You got to be kidding, obviously you haven't seen much of Sid McGinnis. I respect Mark Knopfler, I just had to speak out for Sid. Sid is a phenomenal guitarist. Obviously he had to take a back seat to Knopfler, he's the guest. Sid has toured and/or recorded with numerous artists including Barry Manilow, Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, Dire Straits, Robert Fripp, The Sisters Of Mercy, Cool It Reba, Laurie Anderson, David Lee Roth, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel and others.

  • @mickd01 I think Sid played on the Making Movies album which contained Expresso Love.

  • I said it before...this version of the late night band (Schaffer and the boys) by the far the best line-up, the show ever had!!

  • the shecter strat from calling elvis 1992 i love this guitar:-)

  • Letterman is so young!

  • knopfler can finger better than a lesbian :)

    long live mark

  • hahaha that comment made me laugh alot...great video...pick or no pick love it

  • Mark Knopfler is wonderful!! Forever... But...The "musician" with t-shirt blue is a great Idiot from the world!

    Oh my God!!!

  • Simplemente el mejor!

  • This late-night band was Paul Schaffer best band...I haven't seen this since the one time on Letterman...Great posting!

  • Agree with you completely. Will Lee on bass and Steve Jordan playing drums. I really liked Steve Jordan's drumming on Keith Richards X-Pensive Winos albums and live. Always thought Sid McGinnis was an excellent guitarist, can't compare him to Mark Knopfler but he does trade licks with Mark pretty well on this video. Thanks for the comment!

  • Knopfler plays better with his fingers...

  • 1st time that I've seen MK use a pick!!

  • nice!! never seen this before

  • I like that he uses a pick in this song :) Also in so far away :)

  • Hey Leksingen, you have some great guitar playing on YouTube. Couldn't have a better influence on guitar than Mark Knopfler. Didn't know that about "So Far Away", really like that song, one of my favorites on Brothers in Arms.

  • Yes, I think he uses it on The Man's too Strong :) And a lots of the songs on the new album as well :) Like Punish THe Monkey and Let It All Go, True Love Will Never Fade, and the lovely song Our Shangri-la :)

Thank you! I will keep writing/playing!

  • On the 83--85 tours, knopfler sometimes used a pick on the INTRO ONLY to Tunnel Of Love, then he'd through it to the front row of the crowd. On the Alchemy version however, he is using a pick AFTER the intro to TOL for the first half minute or so...check it out!

  • Answer to mickm305;

    Here's the Alchemy - watch?v=lWCXHjia2Sk

At 1:34 he don't have pick.

At 1:42 it looks like he play the rhythm stuff with a pick, but in 2:12 he finger picking. So I don't think he use any. :)

  • I dont know what you see? but he is using a pick the entire song (:

  • Did he use a pick in the early versions of So far away? I know he do it now.

  • Don't think he did that during the BIA tour.

  • I think he played it with a pick since the emmylou thing

  • Emmylou thing? He uses a pick here!

  • Of course. He never played Expresso Love without a pick. I thought about So Far Away. I think he started playing it since the Tour with Emmylou?

  • No he used it in 2005 as well.

  • no he whas playing whit a pick in the 80 for the first time like here on this movie greets

  • he did serveral songs already with the pick such as so far away with the dire straits
