i am 14 years old and have been playing guitar for a while. When i heard iron man i had to learn the solo by any means necessary. Never thought i could learn the solo but your video helped me. Thank you and rock on!
Great stuff, thank you! Listening to this right after your Cosmic Debris lesson... I never realized how much some of Iomi's solos like like FZ when he sticks to blues patterns
@effzee I agree, both soloing styles deeply rooted in the blues, there's a lot of overlap. Frank greatly admired Sabbath and came close to joining them on a tune live once, but it never happened.
that was awesome !!! but I'm just a beginner so I have to see every lesson for like 20-30 times cuz u teach too fast for me lol... but I rather learn like this than some old guy just teach every detail it 's so anooying:)) thanks for the lesson anyway
This is maybe not 100% original tab, but it's very good and simple (notes are same, just diff octaves i think) ...good lesson too..in other lessons i saw some confusing finger positions and probably Tony didn't used to play like that because his injured fingers. this is the best way to play this solo in my opinion. thank you very much. :D
eventhough sometimes you pass some parts very quickly you are a very good teacher.I learned the iron man and paranoid solo from you without even looking at the tabs you post just from the video.
cool vid man, its helping a lot with me getting the sound down. do you have the solos for N.I.B, into the void, and war pigs? i gotta learn these songs like asap and i know the rhythms, just not the solos that well ><
Noone cares if its official,or its not the exact fret hes playing. Its sounds right, so its ok.You must thank this guy insted for making that lesson and giving you free tabs. Now I can play the solo!Im 14 years old and palying for 1 month, thank u man for making this vid!
Sorry but this is incorrect, the official version (i have the sabbath book), has Toni playing this solo in the 2nd position on the A-string for the first three bars...it even describes him using the "thinner" strings to contrast the heavy sound of the intro chords...also at around 3:35, Toni does not bend the fretted G&B strings on the 9th, rather plays the two together followed by the e note (ie 9th fret on G by itself), in quick succession. The rest is fairly accurate.
@CenturionMachinery You might be right. You probably ARE right. But I am curious what book you have. The one I own looks very official but is riddled with errors. Most TAB books are released without artists' approval or consultation (just like my videos!).
@doctornerve The book I have is called "The Best of Black Sabbath" ..it is part of the signature licks series published and distributed by Hal Leonard....any tab books by Hal you can be guaranteed to be spot on and authorised...the trouble with the internet today is that alot of the stuff you find kicking around on sites like ulitmate guitar, fretplay etc is not correct...overtime this can lead to a dumbing down of the appreciation to play songs correctly.
Virtually every publisher of tab books has something a little different than the next guy's book, and that's not counting the numerous tabs uploaded by "Joe Axeman" that are available on the web. I usually look at 2-3 different versions, and then find some Sabbath concert footage on youtube, or my dvd's to see where Mr. Iommi is actually playing it.
hey nice vid, ive been playing guitar for a few years now and in those years i have not learned much just a few riffs, i would like to learn alot more but i do not think i am experienced to do something so complex like this HELP!
Hi there, i am greatly impressed by your teachings, can you make some vedios on the gears or amps or other settings that brings such accuracy with your each solo lessons, thanks a lot
@Abhiabhi22 Thanks much. Probably not going to do gear reviews since there's so many variables (gtr + pickups + amp + speaker + amp settings + mic placement & rec technique)... I think a lot of gear reviews can send a misleading impression. If it's an amp review people think all the tone is coming from the amp. Do the same review and call it a guitar review and people will think all the tone's coming from the guitar, etc...
Thank you! I'm still learning! tomorrow I continue! I know the beginning of the solo now (H) it's not much but it's a start (H) I know like 2:55 - 3:04!!

@doctornerve Thank you very much, I would try it in gain at 3 or 4, is there any advice for Trebble Middle and Bass?? Thank you again keep making that awesome lessons!! :D
@lucasfilms1297 I used a Krank Dist Max and a Line 6 Flextone II amp, and they mixed together nicely to get this tone. But I didn't note the settings, just dialed it in by ear. Not too much gain is the key, in my view. Good luck in the tone quest!
@doctornerve Thank you very much, I would try it in gain at 3 or 4, is there any advice for Trebble Middle and Bass?? Thank you again keep making that awesome lessons!! :D
dude......omg.....I must be deaf.... I've been trying to get the riff by ear, and I got most of it, like the ending part very well and the one part after the rythym.....................ohhh lord thanks bro for the help keep rockin'!!
@SuperCrazyR18 These are 60's vintage Gibson P-90's. Thick bright single coil pickups that sound superb. BUT they are hummy and noisy and so they don't play too nice with modern high gain amps for example. Check out Lindy Fralin's wide variety of pickups, read up on the various reviews... they offer your money back if you're not happy with the pickups you buy from them. Fralin makes a hum-cancelling P-90. Also makes a high output humbucker. But you gotta do some homework before you order!
@SuperCrazyR18 I would recommend Seymour Duncan pickups, with these pickups you can play vintage and modern styles with a click from your selector switch. The only downfall is that they are on the pricer side.
The most motivational thing i ever heard, when it comes to learning Iommi's solo's, was: If i can play it with 2 fingers you should be able to do it with 4. just like to add doctornerve is a fucking champion!!
@stevelgm Sorry I wasn't clear at all. You wrote asking about chromatic steps in the pentatonic. All I mean is that it's ok to connect two notes in a scale by playing the chromatic steps between them. Those are called passing notes: notes that do not belong to the scale but are used to pass from one scale step to another.
Newbie Question: I am just learning the pentatonic scale. Why does this song not follow the scale? I notice there are bits from the chromatic scale also, is that correct? I managed to get the main riff and chorus down myself before seeing your vid and the tab, but it was all at least one step lower but all from the pentatonic scale. Where am I going wrong?
Thank providence that there still exist people such as your self who have not forgotten what Rock is all about. Sabbath for life, today's music is pure shit.
I've got my left handed SG and I'm ready to ROCK! Not willing to lose a finger tip though! Thanks so much for this it's a great informative lesson and very well played. Excellent teacher, what youtube should be all about.
a very good lesson but there are lots of mistakes on tabs. (not on your playing just tabs) First of all it didn't mention about hammerons and second that I have recognize just for now there have to be another 9 after 9 9 9 11 9 then go down at the first part.
@yasthedoomed haha, thanks much. Zappa was a fan of Sabbath's, came out and introduced them before a couple of their concerts, came thi-i-is close to jamming with them onstage one night. You can clearly hear both guitarists' commitment to the blues and a common love and respect for it.
@doctornerve No probs... I noticed the tabs on your site. It's very rare to find tabs combined with the notes. Very handy! So you rock... I'm just trying to rock, but getting there eventually. (subscribed and don't worry, I ain't gonna bother you with any further comments...)
Muy buena tu explicacion del solo de black sabbath, a mi me ayudo mucho y gracias por la tablatura pero habeces es bueno que alguien te explique como tocar porque seguir una tablatura habeces marea, muy buen aporte, thank you XD
@lemmycro No idea, sorry ... I dial it in by ear. I used the Krank Dist Max and a pretty clean channel on my flextone amp with just a touch of gain. Kept the gain levels down on both amp and krank so that the guitar tone still shines through and sings instead of being squashed by massive grind.
@doctornerve i dialed mine in by ear too on my line 6 spider IV. but thanks doctornerve :] i have to say your guide was incredibly helpful and also probably one of the best guides on youtube. i respect you and your guitar skills so keep shredding bro!
Fantastic lesson! I'm still just a beginner at guitar, but this video is helping me a lot with learning the solo! It's nice being able to hear how every part sounds like slowed down. Now I'm working on playing it up to tempo! This will be my first real big solo.
Hey doctornerve I can now play Iron Man and Paranoid. What other Sabbath songs should I try? I'm thinking about War Pigs but it might be to difficult. What do you think?
@Itswalrus War Pigs is a big meal. But a satisfying one! I'd maybe check out N.I.B. or slow things down and try Behind the Wall of Sleep. Lots of feeling in that tune.
Why doesn't your tab note pull-offs or hammer -ons? I'm here trying to listen to the song and guess em by ear. Kinda defeats the purpose of a tab/lesson...
@doctornerve I can do that too (and have been)... but then again, I can try and learn all the individual notes from the video while I'm at it :) Point being, it's much easier when it's tabbed out. I've looked at many tabs for this song and yours is the most accurate and best one. I just wish it had all the legatos noted.
I want to learn this solo & paranoid, Youre great dr. though I dont' see tab and I really need the tab to learn this, If you can help me learn, I will make up to ya
Hi, I just want to say 'Thank you for your lesson'. I learned the first and second solo parts from your video. Your explanation is very easy to understand. I just uploaded my video, which is a fruit of your lesson !! Thank you!
That's hilarious. " If you're a big Sabbath fan, you'd probably enjoy my band Doctor Nerve." I seriously cracked up when you said that. Beautiful. The kids out there should also check out Miriodor and Blast. Seriously, this lesson was very helpful. I have to teach a student this solo and because of your wonderful breakdown of the solo, I don't actually have to sit down with the album and learn it. Thanks.
@MisterNiles haha, well I ain't lying about that. Miriodor and Blast - great just see those two names in the same sentence. We shared some shows with Blast. Nerve had a ridiculous jam with Blast after hours in Tilburg, heavily fueled by Duval. I have a few snapshot memories of that, including looking up and seeing Dirk pounding the drums mercilessly with a pushbroom. Precious moments.
When i go to the site fot the tab,it doesnt load anything. Just a tan background screen. And the backing track...it only lets you listen to it. It is available for an actual DOWNLOAD? thank you! GREAT video! Sweet guitar. Your a great instructor!
thank you man I learned both first an second solo of the song in less than one week with these videos :) really

@yasthedoomed haha, thanks much. Zappa was a fan of Sabbath's, came out and introduced them before a couple of their concerts, came thi-i-is close to jamming with them onstage one night. You can clearly hear both guitarists' commitment to the blues and a common love and respect for it.

dang it, it doesn't sound half bad when I play it alone, but once I try and play along with the bass track I fall apart.

@doctornerve No probs... I noticed the tabs on your site. It's very rare to find tabs combined with the notes. Very handy! So you rock... I'm just trying to rock, but getting there eventually. (subscribed and don't worry, I ain't gonna bother you with any further comments...)

Can you tell me your amp settings
lemmycro 1 year ago
@lemmycro No idea, sorry ... I dial it in by ear. I used the Krank Dist Max and a pretty clean channel on my flextone amp with just a touch of gain. Kept the gain levels down on both amp and krank so that the guitar tone still shines through and sings instead of being squashed by massive grind.
doctornerve 1 year ago
@doctornerve i dialed mine in by ear too on my line 6 spider IV. but thanks doctornerve :] i have to say your guide was incredibly helpful and also probably one of the best guides on youtube. i respect you and your guitar skills so keep shredding bro!

Fantastic lesson! I'm still just a beginner at guitar, but this video is helping me a lot with learning the solo! It's nice being able to hear how every part sounds like slowed down. Now I'm working on playing it up to tempo! This will be my first real big solo.
Thanks a billion!

Hey doctornerve I can now play Iron Man and Paranoid. What other Sabbath songs should I try? I'm thinking about War Pigs but it might be to difficult. What do you think?
Itswalrus 1 year ago
@Itswalrus War Pigs is a big meal. But a satisfying one! I'd maybe check out N.I.B. or slow things down and try Behind the Wall of Sleep. Lots of feeling in that tune.
doctornerve 1 year ago
@doctornerve I checked out your video of N.I.B. and it seems easy. I'll try it, thanks.

Why doesn't your tab note pull-offs or hammer -ons? I'm here trying to listen to the song and guess em by ear. Kinda defeats the purpose of a tab/lesson...
valkiris 1 year ago
@valkiris Why don't you watch the video and stop guessing?
doctornerve 1 year ago
@doctornerve I can do that too (and have been)... but then again, I can try and learn all the individual notes from the video while I'm at it :) Point being, it's much easier when it's tabbed out. I've looked at many tabs for this song and yours is the most accurate and best one. I just wish it had all the legatos noted.
valkiris 1 year ago
@valkiris Point taken, thanks for the constructive input. Rock on

Thanks.
MisterNiles 1 year ago
@MisterNiles haha, well I ain't lying about that. Miriodor and Blast - great just see those two names in the same sentence. We shared some shows with Blast. Nerve had a ridiculous jam with Blast after hours in Tilburg, heavily fueled by Duval. I have a few snapshot memories of that, including looking up and seeing Dirk pounding the drums mercilessly with a pushbroom. Precious moments.

Gah, the bends are hard to get to the right note (so I just play the actual note by not bending :p ). Thank you for music that is actually right. :D
