Very nice, even though I'm not 49ers fan. I can still appreciate great moments in NFL history. And if you're a 49ers fan, and you see this, and you don't get a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye, than you're somebody I don't want to know.
Vin Scully was a bad ass. Football or baseball. great announcer. They don't make em like that anymore. These old school broadcasters like Scully and Enberg made it feel like a big game.\\
I was listening to Jim Nantz call the AFC Championship game and that call on the missed field goal was horrible.
The Montana / Clark catch was awesome because it was so intense since it was before the their 1st SuperBowl. The Smith/Davis catch was awesome too cause just like the Dallas game we weren't expected to win against the Saints. Just remember though there is still one more game to reach the SuperBowl. This Saturday will me more crazy than last if the Niners win. It's been 17 years since our last SuperBowl (94). It's been too long a stretch. Come on 9ers bring the Glory back to the Bay!!!!
The Catch III is much better than this one. Dwights catch is memorable, but if it wasn't 4 Eric Wright, Dallas would of won this game. Eric's horse collar tackle on Drew Pearson, and Danny White's fumble deserves a lot of credit 2.
Fuck up with this the "the catch III" shit, alex smith won that game for nothing since hes going to lose to eli manning and the giants on an upset like they did to the packers
@xXGermszXx The Catch II 49ers lost their next game, yet the name stuck. No matter what happens on Sunday, Smith to Davis will be The Catch III. Don't fight it, just accept it. Its a fact.
@xXGermszXx By "more haters for the Giants" you mean " more band-wagon fans" because when team does good they dont usually get haters. You will see next year , after the 49ers win the superbowl, how many 9ers fans there will be.
@jowen333 I am sorry jowen, the Giants will beat them Sunday and you can watch the Giants on Super bowl sunday play the Pats or the Ravs you missed this one.
I've heard from the old season-ticket holders that the The Catch III on Sat. (1/14/12) was more emotionally stirring than The Catch based on total crowd reaction.
Nine years of failure, losing the lead with four minutes to play despite having it the entire game, getting it back on an epic QB run on 3rd and long with 2:11 left, losing it again with under 1:40, then driving 86 yards to cap it off with a stunning catch with 0:09 to play.
Unbelievable. Let's hope it all brings Lombardi No. 6.
I PREDICTED "THE CATCH 3" IN MY SONG ABOUT THE 9ERS DAYS BEFORE IT HAPPENED! CHECK MY CHANNEL AND LISTEN TO THE TRACK "49ER EMPIRE" AND LOOK AT THE DATE IT WAS UPLOADED. WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US? NOBODY!!!!!!
When White missed Donnley on that 3rd and and 5 with 4 min to go that would have put them on 49ers 40 that hurt But in retrospect when you can't win with 6 turnovers in a playoff game to go to the Super Bowl maybe you don't deserve it I hate to say
@MrBootsdave If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry christmas. You can go over every play and find a way that the cowgirls could have won. Bottom line, 49ers won. Conversation over.
You are missing the drive the Cowboys had to set up the Field Goal but Danny White fumbled it to lose the game. Without the fumble a certain FG attempt would have happened.
Being from Guatemala, I had never seen a Football game in my life, 'til I saw this one live at my friend's house (who by the way was very rich and had a satelite dish). He had watch the niners at San Fran with his dad that season and he told me look...that's Joe Montana, he's the best. For most of the game I didn't know what the hell was going on but I learned then and I know now, Joe Montana is the very best. Been in love with football ever since.
30 years ago today,Dwight Clark made "THE CATCH" that help the San Francisco 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-27 in the 1981 NFC Championship game. They won SUPER BOWL XVI two weeks later in Detroit. GO NINERS!!!!
Fantastic recording, especially since they showed the entire drive and THE CATCH in context. What it doesn't show, though, is that after the subsequent kickoff, the Cowboys had a pass play down the middle of the field that almost won the game. The open field tackle by the 49ers saved the victory.
A great moment as far as significance goes, but this is a 6 yarder... and he was wide open... Come on. My favorite catch, be it pro or college is definitely Denard Robinson to Roy Roundtree with 2 seconds left against Notre Dame this year. Michigan Scored four TDs in the 4th quarter for a 17 point comeback. That is football. Joe Montana was a great QB, but he was really inconsistent. He just knew how to come from behind.
Why are Raider fans always hating on the 9ers? I went to a 9er game and there was a group of people n Raider jerseys booing the 9ers. The stupid part was that we were playing the Browns. I was like, don't the Raiders have a game going on? Born haters!
watching this on youtube 30 years later already knowing the outcome takes a lot of the excitement out of it. that why it may not seem so "great" to some. but watching this live would be a whole different story. every first down or every play you would be extatic and cheering. beleive me if you were watching this live you would be a lot more impressed
How in the heck does a routine 6-yard pass go down in history as "The Catch"? It was a great drive, and the TD reception showed some great athleticism. And yes, it was an instrumental play for launching SF's dynasty. But as a play, it was pretty ho-hum. I was expecting to see something spectacular, and all I saw was some decent football.
@bluespectralhand " It was a great drive, and the TD reception showed some great athleticism. And yes, it was an instrumental play for launching SF's dynasty. " - are you stupid?
Vin Scully and Hank Stram broadcasted this game on CBS-TV. Everyone thought that Pat Summerall and John Madden did. Pat Summerall called this game on CBS Radio with Jack Buck while John Madden was off to Detroit for Super Bowl XVI
@SGRMProductions im a colts fan but i can still say this. dont insult tom brady by comparing him with joe montana. montana is prolly the most overrated piece of garbage qb in the history of this sport, and tom brady is one of the greatest, so plz just dont.
@indycolt194 Overrated piece of garbage? Montana? You MUST be on crack! Multiple comeback wins, 3x MVP, 3x Super Bowl MVP, HOF, some of the most EPIC moments in NFL history...can you tell me the last relevant thing Brady did? Wearing UGGS? Hooking up with a supermodel? Justin Biebering his hair? Thought so
@sanbrunojess no last thing he did was throw 50 tds in a season win 3 sbs and 2 mvps.. im not a brady fan, matter of fact i hate the patriots but i cant deny he is one of the greatest qb to play the game. and montana plz are u kidding me he is overrated if u want a great qb of that time look at dan marino.
@sanbrunojess but i dont expect u to know football since the only comment u made about brady was his dressing style, hair, and love interest. i mean i thought we were talking about football, no?
@indycolt194 I don't know..are we? Because calling a HOF QB garbage really sounds like football talk. I won't argue with you though...Tom Brady is a great QB and a future HOFer. Calling Joe Montana the most overrated quarterback is way off base, though. If you're not a Montana fan, that's cool. Montana's football career speaks for itself.
@indycolt194 For sanbrunojess, Tom Brady was rocking that hair style way before Bieber was.
Now, Tom Brady is good, there's no denying that. But he can't quite match Montana. I'm a Pats fan, but this is the same Brady that led an undefeated team to the Super Bowl, against a team he's already beaten... and lost. Montana wouldn't have done that. In any case, the game has changed somewhat since then, so it's really hard to tell who is better.
@raetekusu1 I am a huge patriots fan, and when they lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl, I was crushed. The truth is though, Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL, he lost to an EVENLY matched giants team that they BARELY beat in the regular season. It came down to the last play of the game and the giants won. Tom Brady is the best quarterback ever in the NFL
Man these were the games when the cowboys and 49ers use to meet up back in the day. I miss these game true talented physical football games This is the year the 49ers went on to beat the Bengals. It was good close Superbowl. it was all 9ers and Cincinnati made a good comeback attempt if I remember correctly. Cincinnati owned the Chargers in the AFC title game nothing has changed since then..
I remember seeing this as it happened.....it was amazing. Joe Montana was the most amazing QB in the game EVER. No one can beat his states in the same amount of games played.
Yo 70's Steelers, I'm really happy for you, and I'ma gonna let your dynasty go down in history as one of the greatest in sports history, but the 49ers 80's and+ early 90's Super Bowl dynasty was the greatest pro football dynasty of all-time!
greatest moment in NFL history. And you can see it in the fans. I hope we will see candlestick like that someday before we move to that new ugly stadium
Looking at the play, you can make a reasonable judgment that Montana was actually trying to throw the ball away and Clark went up and got it. We'll probably never know for sure.
@billythekid602 #51 for the 49ers was Randy Cross, who later became a broadcaster for CBS and NBC; and is currently at Sirius XM co-hosting their NFL Radio shows. #25 for the Cowboys was Rod Hill who later went on to have a great career with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
@lukeulriksen pads were much bigger back then. the reason pads are smaller today is that new technology allows for better protection from smaller equipment
@killahoekillahoecity ya was agood run for the niners - we came back on later as well - im not mad im getting to old to really get mad - just though id mess with the niners abit
@MrIzzyDizzy haha its all good, and your right you guys did come back, its funny whoever won when the two teams played ended up winning the SB that year...man if both teams could still be as good as they were in the 80's 90's when the NFC was dominant.
@Team903rd Thanks for the 411. As for #2, I know about that game...being from South Florida, the Chargers over the Dolphins 41-38 in OT, with the Hook and Ladder TD, Kellen Winslow Sr. catching like 14 passes, and being helped off the field at the end exhausted...it must have been some game, because years later a local newspaper asked fans to vote for the best Dolphins game...and the winner was The Epic. And the Dolphins LOST the game!
Too bad they couldn't pull off the same magic again this year, of course, the magic this time would have been don't fumble the football..

Is that Jerry Seinfeld @ 7:33 LOL

I remember seeing this as it happened.....it was amazing. Joe Montana was the most amazing QB in the game EVER. No one can beat his states in the same amount of games played.

Literally brought me to tears. Best play in 49ers history.

Yo 70's Steelers, I'm really happy for you, and I'ma gonna let your dynasty go down in history as one of the greatest in sports history, but the 49ers 80's and+ early 90's Super Bowl dynasty was the greatest pro football dynasty of all-time!

IGameUpEverything 4 months ago
@vanrales This was the beginning of the end for the Cowboys. The '80s weren't too kind to them.
lakebay972 4 months ago
Looking at the play, you can make a reasonable judgment that Montana was actually trying to throw the ball away and Clark went up and got it. We'll probably never know for sure.

I didn't know Huggy Bear was @ the game... chk out 6:40... there he is, that pimp!

who ever #51 was for the Niners, he L A I D out the DB #25 for Dallas... check it out @ 1:21 - 1:33.... AWESOME!
billythekid602 4 months ago
@billythekid602 #51 for the 49ers was Randy Cross, who later became a broadcaster for CBS and NBC; and is currently at Sirius XM co-hosting their NFL Radio shows. #25 for the Cowboys was Rod Hill who later went on to have a great career with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

howcome it seems like football players from the 80s and 90s are a lot bigger? do they wear bigger pads and why lol?
lukeulriksen 4 months ago
@lukeulriksen pads were much bigger back then. the reason pads are smaller today is that new technology allows for better protection from smaller equipment

On a added note this post-season was a notable one for a couple of reasons:
1) The aforementioned "The Catch"
2) The Epic in Miami
3) The coldest AFC Championship game ever (Cincy v San Diego)
4) The only SB in the Silverdome (SB 40: "The Bus's going away party" was played at Ford Field)
5) Beginning of the 49ers dynasty
Team903rd 6 months ago
@Team903rd Thanks for the 411. As for #2, I know about that game...being from South Florida, the Chargers over the Dolphins 41-38 in OT, with the Hook and Ladder TD, Kellen Winslow Sr. catching like 14 passes, and being helped off the field at the end exhausted...it must have been some game, because years later a local newspaper asked fans to vote for the best Dolphins game...and the winner was The Epic. And the Dolphins LOST the game!
