This has to be an old video. If that's Roger Houston, it's probably The Meadows, and they did away with the rail a long time ago, as did most harness tracks. Now they just use pylongs.
Harness racing has "bike" accidents that involve mtal, and which can be pretty nasty. I've seen accidents almost as bad as this one.
It was fine very little badly hurted standeredbred horses in crashes harness designed to quick detach and sulkys bend not brake it is better than the old timber ones
The Jockey of the first horse to go down sure was lucky to have gotten up and out of the way in time all the others came.. I sure hope the horse was alright...poor thing. :(((
by the looks of it it only looked like one horse would have been seriously injured (the one that fell first) because all the others semmed to have kept running!
Queen bee get ur facts straight these are standards with 3 strides pacing, trotting and galloping and they are used in that order at speed they pace. A canter is for a galloper . a full bred pacer will pace as a foal and when it goes slower it trots or gallops. Why forbidden. Get a life if u raced u would see it's good for u's and the horse. I own a horse and he keeps himself fit loves the cart. The other one doesn't give up until he passes the leader and that's without whip they are bred to ra
this races should be forbidden, not only because of these accidents but because of how badly horses are trained not to canter. There is a former trotter horse in my stable and it took years until it learned how to canter again and even now its canter is everything else but normal...
@QueenBee294 how badly they are trained not to canter? Uhm at the stb race barn I board at the one mare CANTERS her whole jog work out and is completely fine. And what does she do during races? she TROTS! Oh my they must have badly trained her not to canter. My boy from the same farm cantered just shortly after being off the track. Get your facts straight and learn something for once instead of basing your story off one incident...
Get ur facts straight they are not forced horses do the correct step by themselves and it's the same to go for a Sunday ride as a race. I race I fell I dont care the horses are treated like kings and petted ur horse that does what she wants is useless and a full whip hit is like flick on the ear for u it is to stop the horse backing and to encourage them. The whips are padded I've tried them on myself so shut up haters just cause u have no money to train them and no balls to race them
@horseluvr4 The guy that's running at like 0:43? he does look back....if you watch him you can see that...I believe he is "running" away because he got flung that way and he is going with the momentum...He is getting out of the way of oncoming horses to try and prevent further accidents. @HorseSlaughterSux Do you think any horse has a choice in what they want to do? Every horse is bred for something. No horse has a choice of whether it wants to race, jump, dressage etc.

@zmileyman I suppose, although they don't just carry on running in races, they jump as well. No matter how much you love something, there's always going to be a part of it you don't enjoy. I guess we'll never know unless we can see into their minds... :) They can get injured doing any sport really, and I know the horse I ride loves jumping even though that could hurt him.
@icepaw99 icepaw... not to get into to much in depth discussion... u say ur horse loves jumping...sure it does... but it doesnt know it can hurt him/her enough to be put down if it fails ... if u break UR leg... doctors do not shoot you when u fall trying to do the 100 meters hurdles...or break ur neck in the high/long jump...
attention NOTHING now fuking hear me out ta fuck!!!... riddle me this u freaks??? and the person thas put this up............ if NONE OF THE HORSES WERE INJURED why didnt thy get back up now????, this act will be band by me mark my words!!! it is self minded an crule to see this on u tube all i have to say is u a codding ONLY YOURSELF!!!! thm horses went to the factory cause thy got badly injured!!!!! the videos never LIE ME BUCKO..... in 2012 ther wont be any of this SPORT HOPE U BURN IN HELL
Got nothing against harness racing providing (which in most cases) the horses are well cared for and not pushed more than they can handle.. But i really don't agree with 'Pacing'.. it just seems so unnatural to make them trot (or run..) like that when teaching with the hobbles, i guess i just don't get why it is chosen when they could just naturally trot instead?? If there's a genuine reason i'd love to know, i'm not arguing here, just wondering i suppose?.. x
@megandsirus Actually, we just talked about this in my class recently. Some Standardbreds will naturally pace. For example, if you breed a Pacer to a Pacer, 99% of the time you will get a Pacer. Works the same way with regular trotters. I'm not sure how the harness they wear works exactly, but I know it just helps them from breaking pace or going into a canter. Similar to how there are gaited breeds that naturally pace.
@megandsirus I used to harness race a pacer when I was younger. She wouldn't trot for anything. I would even take her trail riding and instead of cantoring, she'd break into a pace - didn't need hobbles at all. Some horses just do it naturally. People choose to race a pacer because the gait is faster than a trot and hobbles help keep the gait smoother and controlled. Horses love to race - mine couldn't wait to get behind the starting car. Hope that answers your question :-)
RARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE BASTARDS FORCING THESE HORSES TO RACE WHEN SIMPLY THEY SHOULD BE WITH THERE FAMILY. fact: the uk grand national 2009 5 horses died because they FORCED them to race... it makes me sick for a fucking jockey gets his whip and smacks the horse. i hate it even more when they go for a jump and the horse misses it and breaks his neck and has to get put down :( just read it and see what u are really doing to these beautiful creatures :(
@bugattisupersport100 Shut up. Just shut up. It's ignorant tree huggers like you that make me hate the human race sometimes. Why not ban every other sport that involves horses or hurting anyone? Go put your kids in a padded room for all I care, God forbid they get a scrape on their knee. Wake up. You can't force a 1000+ lb animal to do ANYTHING it doesn't want. And what fucking family? A horse knows it's dam and that's the only parental unit they know of.
@bugattisupersport100 You're 12? Why don't you hurry on back to school then, come back to the internet once you've learned to compose an argument that is actually in the English language. For your information, horses do not know a 'family.' They know their dam, and when they are weaned, they get over it. Horses do not break down because they are FORCED to run.. They break down because of prior injuries, bad breeding, a wrong step, a clipped heel, and sometimes - just sometimes - because >
@bugattisupersport100 > because shit just happens. You think injuries are exclusive to racing? You've got harness racing, steeplechasing, and flat racing. Sure. How about eventing? Know how many horses die to injuries they get during cross country? It's probably more than you think. Upper level show jumping and puissance, you know what it does to a horse's front legs to land a 6-7 foot jump? Dressage, and rollkur - do you have ANY clue the kind of damage that does to a horse's neck and back?
my dad was there working that day. i know that Doug got pinned to the rail and had blood squirting out of his arm pretty bad. nasty crash. gotta love harness racing
annoy me is that when something happens, people leave their horses on the ground between the''fork''and they flee to the side. and then they do not care what happened with the horse, it's important that saved his own ass.
@pozeraczkazelkow I know, I can't help but think the same thing, but in a situation like this I can see where your first instinct is to get yourself clear. There's really nothing you can do really but add to the casualty list by doing anything else.
@pozeraczkazelkow I agree. When you have eight other horses running your way, the horse on the ground can withstand it better than a human being can. Save your own ass. And like the person said, none of the horses were hurt.
omg i know this is rude and i shouldnt be laughing but those guys r like "wheeeeee!" they like fly off their horses. anyways thats really sad poor horses and men :(
Attention: none of the horses were hurt at all, in fact every horse involved in this accident is still living today - eating grass from green pastures.
A few of the drivers were injured, but they have since made full recoveries and they are still driving horses today.
Sure, this video looks and certainly feels awful, but the standardbred horse is one of the hardiest animal around and they can come back from tragic events like this with supreme ease. They are amazing animals, to say the least
@burtonk14 SO glad to hear that, especially for the first one that went down - hard to tell, but it looks like he just collapsed which had me thinking breakdown. I have nothing but respect for harness racing people; from what I've heard those horses get treated way better that thoroughbreds and quarter horse racehorses, as far as longevity, stress and soundness goes. The retired harness horses I've seen for sale and "adoption" are always aged in double digits, as opposed to 2-4 for TBs & QHs
is the horse that get trampled on ok?? i was almost in tears thinking about my big lump of a horse being in that situation. :( i wudnt like to be the owner of that horse i feel so sorry for them :( :( that really is the worst accident :(
2) We don't have to argue about everything, although this comment may contradict me.
3) We have lives. That's why we go out every day to look after our horses, instead of sitting on our arses all day watching videos that we don't even care about.
No offense. I just get moody at the slightest things.
@XoDonutxBreyeroX- Drivers aren't allowed to strike the horses with their whip smart one. They only strike the shaft of the bike to make noise. If fact, when any horse ever returns to the paddock after a race with a mark from a whip the drivers are suspended and fined.
The backwards motion drivers make in the stretch are to create propulsion--much like on a swing--not to pull on the horses mouth. If you'll watch the lines you'll see they're not pulling backwards on the horses mouth at all.
Go to an actual race track and watch how the grooms, trainers, and drivers work there ass of everday caring for their horses. They do it because they love it not because they abuse their horses.....SO GET A LIFE AND QUIT BAD-MOUTHING DRIVERS AND HARNESS RACING AS A SPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASSHOLE!!
Ok since you know nothing about Horse racing. It is NOT!! abuse...Tust me if a trainer thinks that a horse doesn't either have the heart or the guts to race..their not gonna race him. The horses at the track probably get more care then you'll probably ever get. I should know I'm a trainer of 15 standardbreds and I race every week! They get more than enough feed a day and probably 5 flakes of hay each a day. New shoes every 4 weeks, a chropractor, and bathes after every jogging workout.
I appreciate the willingness of broadcasters to show everything. I was watching the 1/2 hour recap of the races for day at Gulfstream last week, and there as fall that took down several horses (I think it was four). All they did was list the horses as DNF. No replay, no explanation. I am not one of these people who seek the end of horse racing, but this hiding behind jargon and euphemisms is something I can't stand. It looks like the harness racers are more willing to trust the viewers.
Omg! Poor horse! Mare mare used to pace....Poor baby those sorry horses just like racing when they cant work guess what time it is???? SLAUGHTER TIME FOR THE CHINESE LOL!
Yep, there's always a risk when you step onto that dirty track. But ya know, there's gonna be risk in everything you do. My harness horses are loved to death. But I fear everytime they race somethings gonna go wrong. Pray to God to keep them and their driver safe. I love racing, but I love my horses more.
my father was a harness racing driver and trainer, he told me not to get into the business, and I didn't, its dangerous and there is no money in it, I pity the horses who get injured in falls like this one
@johnduthie316 theres money to be made man, ronny burke sunbathing in florida without a care in the world, johny cambell has got near 280 million made now. and theres always going to be danger in everything. you have to take risks to be great.
@DemonChinChilla355 Sounds like the harness racing business is doing well in the USA, but in Australia it is near death. I remember going to watch the races as a 10 year old ( 35 years ago ) and there would be 10,000 spectators, 75 bookmakers. Now about 500 spectators, and 4 bookmakers, and the prize money is poor. I am sure the better horses are making good money, but the rest its a hobby that is losing money fast.
TOO ANNOSEHOLAY ! HORSES ARE NOT A WASTE IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT WE ARE MORE OF A WAST WE EAT SLEEP SHIT AND ALL THAT SHIT THEN WE DIE HORSES BRING HAPPYNESS INTO OUR LIFES OK?
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX - ah a pacer well they are trained not to "canter" they are trained 2 go with and breed 2 go with there natural gate... if u want a horse that will "canter" buy a riding horse!!! simple but forward!
I grew up on a harness horse farm!!! our horses were and still are treated well... and these accidents don't happen very often! and when they do it's sad... but what we paid yearly to take care of our horses was insain! vet bills, feed bills, hay bills, not to mention the harnesses these horses are not like ur lil fluffy dog's and cat's at home they are trained well taken care of animals! and the time we spend with them is priceless!
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX pacing is how they naturally move. they are most balanced when moving that way. when you ask them to canter, they cannot find balance, which they must learn.
doug snyder had blood squirting out of his arm, someone had a broken arm, but that was it. horses were ok and drivers (for the most part) are too. and harness racing isnt animal abuse. its a lot safer than thoroughbred racing. if a horse doesnt want to be a race horse, then he/she just suck to a point where they quit racing the horse. so its not abuse. f*ck you tampaslice.
@wetanddry24 I find that incredibly ironic. Jockeys had blood squirting out of arms, broken arms... the horses were fine. Amazing how hardy these animals with legs like toothpicks can be.
@ Tampslice, you Fricking @ hole, I am a Harness driver and you know what @sshole, we have to take a breathalyzer test before each race, you must be one of those poor bastards who bet thier life away and don`t know how to pick a horse, WAKE UP.
Looks like the alcoholic cheating drivers got the worst of it. Harness drivers have the worst reputation than any other sport. Most bet on the races they're in and most are raging alcoholics. Would've been nice to see a few horses crush the drivers skulls, maybe break a few backs or necks. Horse racing is one of the worst cases of animal abuse on planet earth!
@Tampaslice Look, horses don't serve a purpose unless they can pull something or wion a race. Otherwise they are nothing more than hay burning, glue-pot-wannabe, french hamburg machines.
Is that what house pets are as well? Food burning worthless creatures? What about the elderly, the homeless, the children? Are they food burning worthless buggers too? Most decent humans get enjoyment simply out of animals being animals, including horses. Just because they don`t suit human`s purposes for their life doesn`t make them worthless. If you don`t suit my purpose, does that give me the right to send you to your tortured death in a bloody hell? A word of advice, THINK.
@BlindMagSoprano What does human kindness have to do with the truth? I have nothing against horses and I think they are perfectly fine in their natural environment running free. It's people and what you call human kindness that have taken horses and domesticated them and turned them into what I said they were.
@anooseholay Your truth is bullshit, that's what is has to do with. You start off saying horses serve no purpose then say they should be in there natural environment running free? If you look back at history, stupid ass, all feral horses started off as DOMESTICATED, the last true wild horses were the Przewalski's Horse, more closely related to zebras than anything. Any "wild" horse was lined back to the conquistadors of Spain, horses they released, and so on, so take your opinion and suck it.
@BlindMagSoprano I didn't realize horses (or any other animal) evolved pre-domesticated. Thank you for the education and for your OPINION as well. Have a great day!
@Tampaslice I would call you an asshole and an ignorant fool, but I think others already ave that covered. ;) But I will say give a few words to live by: Study everything open mindedly from both points of view instead of listening to a few lies from PETA. Ok?
Go to an actual race track and you watch how the grooms, trainers, and drivers work there ass of everday caringfor their horses. They do it because they love it not because the abuse their horses.....SO GET A LIFE AND QUIT BAD-MOUTHING DRIVERS AND HARNESS RACING AS A SPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASSHOLE!!
@HorseGirl28100 who would trust anyone who types like you? You start of by saying it IS abuse. You have just abused the English language there yourself.
@Sheza58 I fixed it, is that ok for you now??. And if you stil don't believe me then that's your fault... for being STUPID! I have my opinion since I race myself, and you can have yours...The wrong one!
@Tampaslice Listen here you mentally challenged moron, drivers are not riding drunk, these guys and gals are great athletes and like in any sport accidents happen. These race horses are treated like royalty with loving grooms trainers and owners. They are fed better then most people in this world including our great USA. The horses are athletes as well and have been bread to run for thousands of years. The ones that get to race are in fact lucky. Now go back to the grandstand with your budwiser
@Tampaslice couldnt have said it better myself! these arseholes that say how much raehorse owners "love and care" for their animals need to get their brains examined. If these people love their horses so much than why are over 50,000 race horse sent to slaughter every year? They only "love" them when they are winning and making money, as soon as they start losing they are sold for dog food. Thats the life of a racehorse.
@no1horselover god damn your just so fucking funny yknow? every racing video i go to i see you, shut THE FUCK UP and stop using exagerated facts from jump racing, you know 0 about our sport. go crawl under a tree, and fucking die

If there's a genuine reason i'd love to know, i'm not arguing here, just wondering i suppose?.. x
megandsirus 4 months ago
@megandsirus Actually, we just talked about this in my class recently. Some Standardbreds will naturally pace. For example, if you breed a Pacer to a Pacer, 99% of the time you will get a Pacer. Works the same way with regular trotters. I'm not sure how the harness they wear works exactly, but I know it just helps them from breaking pace or going into a canter. Similar to how there are gaited breeds that naturally pace.
broodmare25 4 months ago
@broodmare25 Thanks for the reply =] it's good to know that it's not forsed upon them so much =]
megandsirus 4 months ago
@megandsirus I used to harness race a pacer when I was younger. She wouldn't trot for anything. I would even take her trail riding and instead of cantoring, she'd break into a pace - didn't need hobbles at all. Some horses just do it naturally. People choose to race a pacer because the gait is faster than a trot and hobbles help keep the gait smoother and controlled. Horses love to race - mine couldn't wait to get behind the starting car. Hope that answers your question :-)

RARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE BASTARDS FORCING THESE HORSES TO RACE WHEN SIMPLY THEY SHOULD BE WITH THERE FAMILY. fact: the uk grand national 2009 5 horses died because they FORCED them to race... it makes me sick for a fucking jockey gets his whip and smacks the horse. i hate it even more when they go for a jump and the horse misses it and breaks his neck and has to get put down :( just read it and see what u are really doing to these beautiful creatures :(
bugattisupersport100 6 months ago
@bugattisupersport100 Shut up. Just shut up. It's ignorant tree huggers like you that make me hate the human race sometimes. Why not ban every other sport that involves horses or hurting anyone? Go put your kids in a padded room for all I care, God forbid they get a scrape on their knee. Wake up. You can't force a 1000+ lb animal to do ANYTHING it doesn't want. And what fucking family? A horse knows it's dam and that's the only parental unit they know of.

bugattisupersport100 6 months ago
@bugattisupersport100 You're 12? Why don't you hurry on back to school then, come back to the internet once you've learned to compose an argument that is actually in the English language. For your information, horses do not know a 'family.' They know their dam, and when they are weaned, they get over it. Horses do not break down because they are FORCED to run.. They break down because of prior injuries, bad breeding, a wrong step, a clipped heel, and sometimes - just sometimes - because >
Jailbirdx 6 months ago
@bugattisupersport100 > because shit just happens. You think injuries are exclusive to racing? You've got harness racing, steeplechasing, and flat racing. Sure. How about eventing? Know how many horses die to injuries they get during cross country? It's probably more than you think. Upper level show jumping and puissance, you know what it does to a horse's front legs to land a 6-7 foot jump? Dressage, and rollkur - do you have ANY clue the kind of damage that does to a horse's neck and back?

annoy me is that when something happens, people leave their horses on the ground between the''fork''and they flee to the side. and then they do not care what happened with the horse, it's important that saved his own ass.

They are amazing animals, to say the least

bigfilmhat 9 months ago
@burtonk14 SO glad to hear that, especially for the first one that went down - hard to tell, but it looks like he just collapsed which had me thinking breakdown. I have nothing but respect for harness racing people; from what I've heard those horses get treated way better that thoroughbreds and quarter horse racehorses, as far as longevity, stress and soundness goes. The retired harness horses I've seen for sale and "adoption" are always aged in double digits, as opposed to 2-4 for TBs & QHs

I hate harness racing, it's soo crooked. They got the drivers whipping the horses while pulling back at the same time.
XoDonutxBreyeroX 1 year ago
@XoDonutxBreyeroX- Drivers aren't allowed to strike the horses with their whip smart one. They only strike the shaft of the bike to make noise. If fact, when any horse ever returns to the paddock after a race with a mark from a whip the drivers are suspended and fined.
The backwards motion drivers make in the stretch are to create propulsion--much like on a swing--not to pull on the horses mouth. If you'll watch the lines you'll see they're not pulling backwards on the horses mouth at all.

HorseGirl28100 1 year ago

I grew up on a harness horse farm!!! our horses were and still are treated well... and these accidents don't happen very often! and when they do it's sad... but what we paid yearly to take care of our horses was insain! vet bills, feed bills, hay bills, not to mention the harnesses these horses are not like ur lil fluffy dog's and cat's at home they are trained well taken care of animals! and the time we spend with them is priceless!
muffinsmama7 1 year ago
pacing ruins the cordination for when they retire. My friend has an ex-pacer, still cant canter and its been a year
XxXjazzwazzerXxX 1 year ago
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX pacing is how they naturally move. they are most balanced when moving that way. when you ask them to canter, they cannot find balance, which they must learn.

doug snyder had blood squirting out of his arm, someone had a broken arm, but that was it. horses were ok and drivers (for the most part) are too. and harness racing isnt animal abuse. its a lot safer than thoroughbred racing. if a horse doesnt want to be a race horse, then he/she just suck to a point where they quit racing the horse. so its not abuse. f*ck you tampaslice.

It's people and what you call human kindness that have taken horses and domesticated them and turned them into what I said they were.
anooseholay 6 months ago
@anooseholay Your truth is bullshit, that's what is has to do with. You start off saying horses serve no purpose then say they should be in there natural environment running free? If you look back at history, stupid ass, all feral horses started off as DOMESTICATED, the last true wild horses were the Przewalski's Horse, more closely related to zebras than anything. Any "wild" horse was lined back to the conquistadors of Spain, horses they released, and so on, so take your opinion and suck it.
