Excellent explanation for Banjo in the hollow.

Some time ago I said no but I'm very happy with my banjo and practicing every day.

This is my the 6th North American folk songs bluegrass style.

Hi Rick, your lessons are a tremendous help...I have been playing for only one week and just had a basic Banjo in the hollow only using the 9,10 and fifth fret and your vid taught me to use the 1st,2nd fret and put the roll in it on the second part...Wish you were in texas for private lessons....Thanks and please post more....

A pinch is when you play two or more notes at once. If you use your thumb and another finger together it is kind of like a pinching action.

Need help a bit. Anyone know an easier way to hold down the2nd and 3rd strings at the same time on those 5th through 8th notes? My fingers are skinny--not probably as big as this player because he has no problem holding them down. Whenever I try, alot of the times the 2nd string goes dead. Any suggestions? (besides cutting off my small index finger haha)

Hey Navigatr,

I'm assuming you are talking about the second measure where we fret the 2nd and 3rd strings at the 5th fret. You can use any fingers you want. I use the middle and ring fingers of my left hand. Just make sure you get up close to the fret, get up on the tips of your fingers, and push down with enough pressure to get a clear sound. If you don't use enough pressure you will get a muffled sound.

Very good, but I cant figure out what a hollow is. Ive asked everyone I know. My uncle calls the song Banjo in the holler but wont tell me what it is. He thinks its funny. Does anyone know?

Yes, a hollow is a holler. If you live up a little valley in the mountains, you live up the holler. :)
