  • keiko's birthday march. such a beast tune :D

  • @NormanSmith1960 The two Joes pretty much dominated after Coltrane and before Brecker matured.

  • if somebody has the LP "The Ultimate" Elvin Jones Trio with the same group as "Puttin it together" please let me know. I love this group who lasted one year and this record is only avaiable on a 8 CD box set "the complete blue note sessions".

  • Joe Farrell is one of the greatest underrated players EVER. And he was a fantastic flute player as well. Check out "Humpty Dumpty" on the Chick Corea side "The Mad Hatter". It's burnin' and Farrell tears it up. One of the great losses in jazz.

  • His first beat is very similar to the one in Larry Young's "Zoltan" , innit ?

  • @FunkySkunk90 Absolutely, you nailed it. Zoltan!

  • The Great Trio. with the master Joe Farrell!! I always thought that after Elvin left coltrane , this was his best group he ever had. I like the concept of sax Bass and Drums without the piano. Great clip from copenhagen. super performance Wauw.

  • I agree, I love their album "Putting it Together" , but I also like "On the Mountain" with Jan Hammer and Gene Perla and Elvin LIve at the Lighthouse

  • @AS5A I NEVER get tired of On The Mountain! Still sounds modern today. Pretty sure it's the only time Elvin appears in an electric configuration.

  • @Sax4Him Yeah, I call it Elvin's Fusion album

  • @AS5A I love that element of the LP, super swingin' drums with Hammer's melodic Moog/EP and accoustic bass----beautiful!

  • @Sax4Him Gene Perla plays electric on Genesis... it's pretty heavily produced too

  • @Dionysosable I agree..its amazing with no piano or guitar that the music doesn't get redundant.. elvins work with these 2 was definitively the best. i have his complete blue note recordings boxset..some of the best music i own..regards

  • Of course. He's a great player, too. I have my own favorites. I have my opinions. I'm not as big of a Coltrane fan as I am Farrell, that's all. I like Farrell's big sound and "fatter" chops. Not everyone hears the same things in music as everyone else does. There's room for lots of perspectives. To me, this trio is just incredible.

  • Listento that! This is the first time I've heard Joe Farrell & I'm impressed.

The fire the 3 bring is hot. Coltrane

    would be proud.

  • yeah, I said it and I meant it. Obviously John Coltrane was great. But not everyone enjoys the same thing as everyone else or hears it the same way. Coltrane could have gotten any drummer he wanted. He picked Elvin. Elvin could have gotten anyone to play in his band when the time came, too. He picked Joe Farrell. Put that in your pipe.

  • @OLugs I don't think you're crazy. Joe is incredibly focused. Just listen to the way he develops those triad and suspended ideas. He had a great feel, a great sound, and a killer harmonic sense. Brecker doesn't mention Joe, but I know they knew each other and Joe had to be one of his influences...along with Trane and Joe Henderson.

  • Joe Farrell is more ballsy than Trane? ok man...

  • master

  • Oh man, Elvin and Jimmy are syncopating so sweetly behind Joe...this is what swing is all about! Great trio...

  • Brecker sure can play, but he sounds too much like his great teacher to be considered in a class w/Farrell.

  • Who is Brecker's teacher ?

  • Joe Henderson

  • I love Joe Farrell's playing almost as much as Michael Brecker's...for many of the same reasons. I just wish more of it was available.

  • Awesome...Amazing what Farrell can do on one chord..The master of the pentatonic.
