My dog, Candy, looks like a Basenji though she is all white, her hair is a little longer than a basenji and she CAN bark...I'm not sure what breed she is but I do know she is mixed... She listens to commands and is VERY energetic and active( she can jump higher than 6"ft) plus I assure all of you she is very very healthy :) and I do love her with all my heart. Oh and she only listens to my dad and I though there is five people in my family total...
My dog snowball is lab/rat terrier/ basenji and licks herself a lot but barks a lot like a lab and is medium size but my dog mostly acts like a lab or a terrier not much of basenji but for the licking and biting part lol
@Kisamenouke Dogs are actually one of the breeds that aren't independent unlike cats since they bathe themselves, Dogs will require you to clean them, if you aren't too busy then you are able to care for them, If you have them young you can easily train them but they will be hard to manage in controlling like running out the door, if you pick a old one they won't have energy as they used to which makes it easy to care but harder to train

This is because, like cats, they are very independent and feel as thought they are your equals. They don't blindly follow/listen. They have a lot more personality then most dog breeds I have encountered because of this trait.
@hockey6221 see my response. Dog associations seem to equate intelligence with ability to train, which is misleading. Also, in their native Africa, they are treated as equals and they have only been domesticated in the western sense for only little over a century.
I've had a basenji for almost ten years, she's a great dog, trained, and an awesome companion. She rarely even yodels unless she needs to go out. She's almost 10..but she has great charisma and energy, she loves running around. (:
We used to have a Basenji but we had to give her away since she kept runnning away. I just hope she got to a good home where she had more room to run and be herself. I loved that dog. We used to wrestle all the time and her and my other dog cuddled together when they slept. :3

Basenjis are active dogs and need a fenced-in yard or nearby dog park to stretch their legs--if they don't get sufficient exercise, they'll unleash their energy making mischief (AKA eating your couch). Boredom would drive them insane if they were cooped up in an apartment all day. Anywho, basenjis are great dogs for those willing to make the effort to train and handle them properly. I have two and will likely never own another breed.

@asgarnon I had a friend who had hunting dogs. He had pictures of his small (50LB) dogs cornering terrified mountain lions that were 7-10x the size of the dogs. The mountain lions were just scared of the audacious dogs, I don't think they even knew they could shred the dogs. It's the same thing here, I think.

I've owned close to a dozen basenjis over the years and have had no trouble with them getting along with other animals. Alpha males can be aggresive if raised alone, but like any other dog, as long as the owner is the alpha without being abusive, they are just fine
@UndoCreation89 It's wrong I would say. They are far too small. They are used for hunting yes, but in the rain forest, and they are used for hunting by having bells around their necks so the hunters here were they are going. They bark as well, but like dingos and NGSDs only monotone.
Furthermore an "aloof" personality is not cat-trait the dogs mentioned above have the same trait, so do many livestock-guardian dogs and other types of feral and Shensi- and Pariah-dogs.

When we bought my dog, the papers said he was a basenji. turns out there was many signs that he wasn't a basenji. 1st he can bark. 2nd he doesn't have that curled tail. We finally found out that he was a Portuguese Podengo. Sort of like a basenji. But basenjis are gorgeous dogs though.
@NachosYumYum123 I'm so sorry :(~~ I had to put my dog down and then they had my wolf put down within a few months of each other. I sort of walked around like a zombie for months. Only God got me through it.
Basenjis are low maintenance as far as grooming goes but not the best to bring to an office because ther are extremely energetic although my basenji sleeps and lounges around til late in the day then has tons of energy. They don't use the bathroom as often as a really small dog would and it depends if it's been playing and running around. Def an awesome breed though!

I have a bullmastiff and was at the dog park once, my dog was a 7 month old pup but already over 100 pounds. He approaches a basenji to greet him, they sniff eachother a bit, and the basenji proceeded to chase him around the whole park! Big personality and lovely dogs.

It depends on your allergy.
If you have an allergy to long fur and the sorts(most common), then you should be ok.
I do know their are other types, but i dont really know how a basenji would affect them.

@NachosYumYum123 I'm so sorry :(~~ I had to put my dog down and then they had my wolf put down within a few months of each other. I sort of walked around like a zombie for months. Only God got me through it.

Basenjis are low maintenance as far as grooming goes but not the best to bring to an office because ther are extremely energetic although my basenji sleeps and lounges around til late in the day then has tons of energy. They don't use the bathroom as often as a really small dog would and it depends if it's been playing and running around. Def an awesome breed though!

I need help we are gonna get a new dog and we want to get a basenji, 4 people in the family, my mom will bring it to work, and need a low maitneece dog. is this the dog for me? to they have to use the bathroom alot?

HOLY CRAPP I cant believe they uploaded this to youtube, my dogs in this vid, the only trindle dog that you see in the beginning with all the red and whites is my dog sabra, and that guy in the purple shirt who had her over his shoulder was my dad.

Basenjis are #2 on the list of world's dumbest dogs... My aunt had one once, and when I slept over her house, I woke up to having no pants. The stupid dog ATE my pants while they were folded up on a chair. The dog got surgery to have it removed from her, and it eventually died from eating a handful of needles. Maybe because my aunt doesn't care enough to train her dogs, just sits around in piles of gold, petting her purebreeds....

@amax7895 Basenjis are actually extremely intelligent, but they're one of the hardest breeds to train because they have a mind of their own--they're very much like cats. And eating clothes doesn't apply to basenjis...it applies to pretty much any bored dog. xD Anyway, me and my brother watched dogs 101 obsessively waiting for the basenji episode because we have 2. We love them dearly, although I do believe they're smarter than us. They look at us like they know something we don't....LOL.

Well my basenji knows how to sit, lie down, roll over and go into the house when we tell her to. Besenji's are beautiful dogs and need to be trained at a young age because we have a very smart basenji :)

basenji's on an average is ranked 99th for intelligence. rank 100 is Afghan hound.

I have a bullmastiff and was at the dog park once, my dog was a 7 month old pup but already over 100 pounds. He approaches a basenji to greet him, they sniff eachother a bit, and the basenji proceeded to chase him around the whole park! Big personality and lovely dogs.

@mizznickjandtomk My Basenji mix is a master cuddler. I don't need a calking bed, like I did with my GSD, because he sticks to me like glue. I absolutely love him, he is an awesome dog.

You know I have been waiting forever for them to do this breed. Once when I was in seventh grade I saw a pic of the Basenji in a dog book and have loved it ever since. (Actually I love any breed.) and had always wanted to learn more about this breed. When did they finally get to this breed?
