I don't hear it but someone said the actor in this Doritos clip sounds like Norm MacDonald's brother - go to Crashthesuperbowl and put "tracker" in the search box
In which Norm MacDonald handles getting fired with incredible grace, then goes on to tell a gem of a story. The bit where he realises his father is dead is one of those stunning pieces of comedy that Norm seems to produce again and again.
Geez! Either Norm MacDonald did something heinous he can't discuss....or NBC are not so smart. Yeah, great idea to get rid of such talent. Way to go, dumbasses!
It's obvious he's just comfortable with Letterman and didn't want the firing to bring him too down. He definitely doesn't want to start running his mouth off at the execs and get in trouble.
Norm was always like the uncomfortable comedian.... you never knew whether he was telling a joke or breaking character.... and that's what i liked the most about him... what kind of fucking douche fires this guy -the only reason i watched snl was for HIS weekend update-, and for what bullshit reason?
Glad to have found this here. This interview made such an impression, when it originally aired, that I have a number of Norm's responses committed to memory to this day!
One of Norm's last jokes on WU: "At a press conference this week, FAA officials studying last year's crash of TWA flight 800, announced that they have pinpointed the cause: a frayed wire leading from the jet's fuel tank. According to the investigators, the wire became frayed when it was struck by a missile. That'll - that'll fray a wire."
@Tylerdude: Possibly, but my Canadian relatives pronounce While the same way he does too "why-L". The way British people pronounce herb. Is it "Herb" or "Err-b"?
@Axerty1234 I'm a David Letterman fan especially compared to one-trick pony Jay Leno. The problem is David Letterman hasn't been the "Letterman" we all loved and remembered from the NBC days for the last 12-13 years now. He was so clever and funny, and did some crazy hilarious things back in the day. By the late 90's though he just stayed behind that desk, you could see it was just routine for him at that point.
You want to see some amazing Late Night TV...watch Letterman from the 80's& 90's.
At around 2:58, NBC had to cut out that part of the interview because Letterman called him "Happy Hour Don" in reference to his alcoholism. That's why there's sudden unexplained laughter.
This is why I've always preferred Letterman to Leno; can you imagine Leno calling an NBC executive an idiot and a pinhead? And I know he was at CBS at this point but he did it when he was with NBC too. And he was genuinely supportive of Norm and showed it. Whatever you may think of Letterman, he's no phoney.
@conanfan33 Oh, well, yes that too. Also, he's no quisling. Though to be fair Leno was funny a looooong time ago when he used to come out and do five minute bits on Letterman's old show. But once he stabbed Letterman in the back and took over the Tonight show he was boredom incarnate.
@xbuddhistxfistx That's the exact reason I love Letterman; defending Norm and calling an NBC executive a pinhead and an idiot--which he was not afraid to do when he was employed by NBC. Imagine the boring, backstabbing Leno doing anything like that?
When did letterman decide to start mailing it in? He was awesome in this interview. He's so awesome as an interviewer here. I used to be Daves biggest fan, but *sigh* he needs to hang em up
later he says don wouldnt let him off the show, hmmm norm also is telling us he sucks in the skits but will be allowed to be in them. Its like don wanted to ruin his rep as a funny guy but places norm in stuff he wont do well in so when the contract was up no other company take him. Considering don was a known fan of OJ and norm did plenty of jokes, many people believe he was fired for those reasons. Love ya norm...always
The show after commercials is what 42 minutes? Norm got over 16? That's great for a guest, Dave respects Norm. Norm is one of the few genuinely funny people alive, doesn't need material or punchlines, can just sit and talk and crack you up constantly. He's one of my favs along with Adam Carolla, Tracy Morgan and Rick Gervais.
NBC tried to help Conan, the problem is, Jay Leno is a douchebag, and the TV scene is changing. Internet is to blame not NBC in regards to Conan, blame NBC for Norm for sure, and as far as Letterman is concerned...I wasn't around :)
I'm German, so I'm not really that good at distinguishing Canadian and American accents, but the way Norm says 'sorry' is definitely Canadian, right? :D
Why cause he ain't down with you southern racist conservative Evangelical douchebags who want to start wars with Countries that haven't done jack shit to Americans whatsoever???? Maybe cause he's ok with Gay people or is ok with Mulitculturism? Maybe because he likes the idea of poor people getting health care? MAYBE because he doesn't want to see a guy who smokes a J go to jail for year? Yeah, it's ok to drink cause it's in the bible...SHUT THE FUCK UP

The last decade has been a bit of a tragic story for Norm. Late 90's: voted 2nd best thing about turning on the TV. It's too bad he didn't play ball, but that was always his strength.
If you watch/listen to Stern w/ Norm on, he admits to being a 'loner'. No question he's one of the funniest men alive, but you have to be political to last. It's too bad he didn't listen to Letterman's advice in this clip.
best letterman interview I've ever seen. he actually seemed like a funny and decent guy. and he let Norm go on for about 6-7 minutes more than the guests usually get. canæt blame him, Norm is funny everytime he opens his mouth.
