The problem is David Letterman hasn't been the "Letterman" we all loved and remembered from the NBC days for the last 12-13 years now. He was so clever and funny, and did some crazy hilarious things back in the day. By the late 90's though he just stayed behind that desk, you could see it was just routine for him at that point.

The last decade has been a bit of a tragic story for Norm. Late 90's: voted 2nd best thing about turning on the TV. It's too bad he didn't play ball, but that was always his strength.

If you watch/listen to Stern w/ Norm on, he admits to being a 'loner'. No question he's one of the funniest men alive, but you have to be political to last. It's too bad he didn't listen to Letterman's advice in this clip.
