As for second part, you`re not completely correct: although I was not born yet, knowledge from that period can be found in books. I have version of international cloud atlas from 1953 or 63, and everything there is still valid, and I use it in everyday work (as a meteorologist). And what we see on this movie is caused by precipitation (you can see virga in the middle of the "hole"). Nothing unusual.
