Thanks. I really need to learn how to rewind that spring for I've bought 3 weedeaters now for pull cord reasons only. I always like engines of all sorts & have always looked at that little 26 cc engine thinking what else it could do. And also its design life, for a throw away engine, I'll bet it'll last longer than people have patience. Of course, souping 'em up changes things.
I have built engines for people that have lasted for years. The key is to mix your oil 6 to 8 oz. per gallon. Gives better protection . I actually have a 4 stroke lawnmower that I use to mow a hillside that I burn the same mix in. The engine has out lasted the mower deck. It doesn't smoke or foul plugs either .
Being the airplane nut I am, I see a future for my Homelite engine swinging a small propeller for shits & grins on a static display. For now though, I'll just dream about it.
How would you rate these throw away engines ? My first '94 Homelite weedeater 26 cc (USA?) ran every season for 11 years when the pull cord broke & I gave up on the recoil spring. Foolishly I threw it away. My 2nd one was very similar & this one I have after its cord broke. My latest Homelite is still a 26 cc (new weedeater) but has a made in China, low emission (lean jetted carb.) engine. I've had no problems in the 1 season I've been running the same engined blower.
@kolbpilot The older homelites are the best for rc use. If you up the compression , do some port work and some other tricks , you can have a great engine for little to nothing if you can do your own work on it. I have rewound many pullstarter springs . If your spring is broke , I have a spare to 2 . If it just needs rewound I can do that also.
@chipbreakr Thanks for the info. I now realize my older Homelite is a 25 cc model. I ordered a Zama adjustable carb for it & the whole affair is now powering my 26 in. Huffy mountain bike. I'm impressed that a little engine like that can get my 185 lbs. (& the 45 lb. bike) up to 25 mph. My new moped but a little more versatile really.
@chipbreakr man you should look for a source of gasoline that is pure( without ethanol mixed into it) ethanol is not good for 2 strokes it develops a sludge over time that clogs carbs and deteriorates rubber gaskets and fuel lines or any thing rubber it touches in the carb and engine
If you know anything about a Homelite trimmer engine , you know they have half cranks in them . If you look closely , you"ll see there is a bearing on the back side of the engine . I modified the block and the crank on the engine to make it a full crank engine . There are only 3 of these known , and I built all 3 . So, that is what"s special and it's modified to run at higher rpm than a regular homelite .
In r/c boat you can have the water force fed from the rudder or run a vacuum operated fuel pump that is connected to the engine block to pump the water.
On some of them, it sounds like you've lightened the fly wheel. Then do you just re balance the thing? Do you explain any of this in detail anywhere? Let me know if I'm not intruding on your secrets.
I grind down the fan blades on the flywheel. You have to be careful not to remove to much material , as it will weaken the flywheel., then I rebalance it . You don't want to do this mod if you aren't watercooling the head .
This was a "one of" engine it had a custom full crank in it that I made. A regular full mod 30cc with pipe and engine mounts is $375.00 , if you furnish a good repairable engine $275.00 I won't be building any until this fall.
I roll them by hand out of 22 ga. sheet metal. You make a pattern for the front cone and one for the rear cone. I use silver solder to connect the seams and then weld the 2 cones together ,add a 1/2" pipe for the stinger and a 7/8" pipe for the header .
Awesome! how do you make it fit onto the exhaust port, being that they're oval shaped, and how do you measure the exhaust port accurately? Thanks a bunch!
Take your box muffler apart and remove the plate the is at the exhaust opening in the muffler , It has 2 holes and the exact opening that you will need to make a new exhaust manifold with , just measure it and you got it.
You have to have to take your time and don't try to to much metal at a time. Make small gradual bends until you make the cone. . You need and lathe and mill to make a aluminium billet exhaust manifold . If you don't have access to them it ain't going to happen .
The cylinder is a homelite cylinder. I have a fixture that I use in my lathe to turn down the top 5 fins on the cylinder. Once you remove the fins you can make a waterjacket [either round or square] to fit over the cylinder and drill and tap 2 - 8x32 holes in the top to attach the jacket. Put 2- 10x32 holes in the jacket for the water to run in and out of the jacket. you can buy 2 water fittings to connect the water lines to .
I don't make the full crank version like this anymore . A regular full mod with this waterjacket would cost 250.00 without the pipe . I mod mostly zenoah now .
i have a promblem on my huquvava 325 e tech the starter rope ciol has a plastic peice the attaches to a metal peice the metal peice has a rod that runes throught the engine and turns the flywheel but i attached it but the fly wheel does not turn but i did find a metal peice that was broke ive never done any work on these engines before but this one is a real pain in the but
The 254 plugs work fine for me. I have a fixture I made for my lathe that has a offset hole in it that makes setting the crank up to grind the pin a lot easier .
I use a autolite 254 sparkplug , I have a few 167 carbs , but you can find them on ebay from time to time . Is the crank you are making forged or just made from one piece of steel? Both work fine, just make sure you harden the rod pin .
Do you get any radio interference with the 254plug? The Autolite site says the 254 isn't a resistor plug. I've been running champions but got some Autolite 425 copper plugs to try which have a suppression core.
I'm not making the crank I'm going to modify a 25cc. I got a hold of an older 25cc for free and it has the old style forged crank. I'm going to have to grind it down to accept a 30cc rod/bearing because the old rod is thin.
What plug are you using? Also where did you get you 167 carbs? They stopped making them and I have a hard time finding them. I've been messing with Homelites a while now, but now since I have a machine shop at my disposal I'm making a Forged crank 25cc to go with my other WHH 30cc Pros. Awsome work.
oh... so it does have a coouple of cones inside the pipe???
well one is above the intake, and the other is below the exhaust.... if i do need a new head, could i use one from a 30cc motor???? nah i didnt use the degree wheel, cuz i did it when i was like 12 when i first got the motor. now i am 16 ad know a little more about this stuff.
also what do i need to run an alky carb on it? thanks
It's one of my steel tuned pipes front cone , rear cone. If the place you put in the cylinder is below where the ring rides , it will be OK , if it above where the ring rides you'll need a new cylinder. If your not familiar with modding homies , you can do more harm than good. Did you use a degree wheel to set your ports?
is the pipe hollow or does it have staged cones in it?????
btw i seen your 25cc motor and want to do the same to it.... i have the intake port ported a bunch, and the exhaust as well, but when i did the porting i seemed to catch the cylinder wall with the bit,.. can i hone that out or do i need to just get a new sleeve????
i have an old school homelite and im not sure what it is i.e what cc it is or year it was made in if you have any tips to find out or if you can help me (cause you probably know alot about homelites) let me know ill give you all the info i can. its going inot an airboat btw its about 5ftlong by 3ft wide its going to be alot of fun
read the comments on this page for information on mods . you can remove the muffler and look in the exhaust port ,if the piston has 2 rings and the exhaust port doesn't have a divider in it , it;s a 30cc . Otherwise it's a 25cc.
It could be a real old homie , some had a one ring piston on them. Look on the base of the cylinder and see if it says 30cc . If it's got a one piece crank , it would make a good modded engine .If the piston is 1 7/16" diameter , it's a30cc.
It's a walbro 167a , it called a big bore . If your homelite is stock it will help some , if it's modified you can use a 167 or a 257 .They are on ebay all the time for around 25.00 to 35.00
That's a beautiful engine. I am wondering how you made your muffler though. I've got a bike powered by a Homelite Super 2 chainsaw engine and would like to mod the muffler so that I don't bother my neighbors ever time I go for a ride.
As I stated below , I made all the aluminium parts and modded the engine. I've been building High Performance 2 cycle engines for over 10 yrs. The waterpump is a vacuum operated fuel pump .
If you were to run a nitro engine without a chassis, it'd be a total nightmare...
