  • sorry im not a tree hugger but when you strip a mountain top off you are asking for trouble the ground can only soak up so much water when you remove it's capabilities to do this you get nasty destructive flooding such as this ........

engineers should care more for human life instead of greed.

i lived in canada ky for a few yrs went to bevins grade school and the old belfry high for period of time before getting the hell out of that place and coming back home to knoxville,tn

  • Ohhh boy lets hammer on coal. coal coal coal. Ya fucktards dont have brains god gave a flea . How about all the damn farmlands wilderness being cut out for fucking housing devlopments , thats wher ur damn main flooding issues come from . Either pull your head out of your asses . Or go climb the pole near your house and cut down ur entrance power line and live in the dark. DUMB FUCKS

  • It will still flood no matter if there is a coal mine or not . It just makes the mines easy targets because it floods sometimes were there might be a mines close to were it hapen at . But ther is floods were there ant mines so what should we do close down or mines set in the dark thats sounds so stupid.

  • flooding is an act of GOD flux you jackass. you and your treehugging buddies need to wake the hell up,have you shut that power off yet, i doubt it. set an example, all of you people that hate coal so much stand up and do the right thing, shut off your power, untill then, none of you have an arguement.

  • Philbusa, in a healthy mature forest, trees absorb 75 percent of the rainfall - according to the US Office of Surface Mining. The leaves on the forest floor act like a sponge to soak up the rainfall, and the ground absorbs much of the rest. With mt top removal, or logging, or oil and gas roads, the water runs off the mountains much more quickly, resulting in flash floods in the hollows. In Varney WV people told me mountaintop removal made the flooding worse.

  • Why no pictures of where the flood originated? I am curious in those photos as I have been to Gilbert the headwaters of this flood and the hollow I was told this flood originated has no mine in it. Does anyone have any photos to prove otherwise? Where can I email to get them please. Doing a documentary and collecting information. The rainfall amounts here were more than seven inches in 2.5 hours is what NOAA is stating.

  • MW,

If you go to Gilbert High School (which was flooded as you know), you can stand in the parking lot and see a big surface mine right above/behind the school.

Have you checked Google Earth? Might be helpful also.

If I get more info I will email you back.

  • However the flooding originated upstream from the town of Gilbert and the school is below the town of Gilbert. In fact the flooding from my continued investigation originated above Hanover in a hollow that there is no mine. I am still trying to find the answer but as of yet not even the men on the ground can give one other than the amount of water that fell. What is ironic is there is a dam just a few miles upstream that is supposed to prevent this.

  • Interesting. But most of the dams in the coalfields are for water filtration not to control flooding. They do fail. Jack Spadaro is claiming that a dam failure near Quicksand KY caused the flooding of homes in May. Its been in the Lexington KY paper. You can google Jack for more info, he knows a lot about mines and dams.

  • philbusa, KARMA ia an act of GOD flux too!!! one day your inconsiderate, boorish, rude and thoughtless attitude will bite you your jackass...why dont you shut off your mouth like your telling people too shut off their power because your argument stinks like your jack"ass".

  • its simple dvmusick, ill say it again and again. DONT LIKE MTR AND COAL,SHUT IT OFF,ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE,you and your treehumping buddies have all the anwsers how to do it right,YET NOT ONE OF YOU HAVE A GUTS TO USE THESE FAIRYTALE METHODS YOU BRAG ON,personally it makes me sick, and obviously a lot of others are as well. fact is coal miners are going to fight to the end,so get used to it or hit the bricks.

  • If you talk to the people of these communities, most of whom rely in part on the coal industry for their livelihood (correct?), what do the say about the mountain top removal? Personally, I would pay higher electricity bills to remove the need to post videos like this.

  • Mountain Top Removal did this ... not the weather

not sayin' it's not part of the same agenda though
