My Dad, Seaman 1st Class aboard the USS Pillsbury 133 DEE, when he took part in the capture of U 505..He died 2 1/2 years ago. I have seen the shorten version of this film, but I am amazed for the very first time seeing this video in length in the capture of the U 505.. All the men who took part in this mission are our heroes. My brother and I are very proud of our Dad taking part of this secret mission. Dad, you are our hero, May you rest in peace.

I had the priveledge of meeting Hans Goebler, who served aboard the U-505 at the time of her capture. At the time of our meeting, he resided in Florida. He was a most gracious gentleman and I truly enjoyed meeting him. Mr. Goebler died several years ago. If I remember correctly, at the time of his capture he was 17 or 18 years old. I would not be surprised if he was one of the surviving vets that mbasell posted about. Hans worked closely with the museum assisting with his knowledge of the boat.

@price7204 Yes, reading Han's book gives you a good idea of what it was like aboard U-505 and you get a good idea of Hans himself - he was in my opinion U-505. I would have loved to meet this great U-boat man. RIP Hans! Shame the U.S flag is flying on the sub now...should be the original German one to be honest.

I was fortunate to meet both Adm. Gallery and the Captain of the U-505 at a 25 year re-union aboard the sub at the Museum in June 1969. There was plenty of press coverage, mostly WGN, and several surviving vets from both sides were there. It was quite interesting to see those folks shaking hands after shooting at each other only 25 years earlier.

Its good to see this film again. When I was kid they used to show a shortened version of this film right after you ended your tour of the U-505 in Chicago. I live near by the museum and have probably been on the U-505 twenty times in my life. But they don't show this film any longer. Seeing it again is very nostalgic for me. Thanks for posting it.

I played on this vessel back in the 60s, during a field trip, didnt some scouts sink it in the Lake (early 60s) by messing around with valves ??? seems like I remember that story
