Could somebody explain this to me? I don't watch hockey, so answer me something: When are they allowed to fight, if they are, and how long? Also, when does a body check become a foul or whatever?

they are allowed to fight while play is going on. once the whistles blow to stop play they cant(unless they are fighting). They fight until they go down to the ice, someone gets knocked out or blows havent been exchanged for a while. body checks are fouls when you hit from behind or hit someone headfirst into the boards

They can drop the gloves whenever they want. They fight one guy drops or until the linesmen decide it's enough. Body checks can become penalty if the elbow is used, if the hit is to the head, if the victim is not carrying the puck, if you use your arms(with the stick, crosscheck), If the guy is 3-5 feet from the boards...there are a few more, but it's usually up to the refs.

According to the rules, they are never allowed to fight. Fighting is NOT a part of icehockey.

In Europe, anyone who throws their gloves receives an automatic suspension. In the NHL they are less strict: you get a personal 5 min. penalty.

There are several ways to foul up a check. One way is taking too many strides before hitting your opponent (called charging). A few other ways are to hit a non-puck carrying player (interference) or ram him into the boards (boarding).

its part of the game everybody loves a good fight! if the game is still going and 2 guys want to fight they have to drop gloves then the refs let them fight until one has had enough, but if they are about too fight after the wistle was blown then they arent allowed and have to wait to the game starts again then they are free to punch each other out, both of the fighters get a 5 minute penaltie and the number of players on the ice does not change

I'm also a South African and have played plenty of rugby. I've been to NHL games and quite enjoy the sport. I agree however that there is really no place for fighting; rugby is every bit as physical yet fighting is absolutely not tolerated. Hockey is a poorer sport for it.

Fighting part of the sport. I'm guessing your either British or Australian based on the fact that you played 'Rugby' at school so I'm guessing that your not used to seeing this in a sport. At an international level fighting is extreemley discouraged, but in the NHL it is just what happens, either to spur on your team or to send a message to the other team. Either way its an accepted part of the sport, happens all the time and the two guys involved only have to sit a five minute penalty

There have been injuries in fights, lots of guys get cuts and sometimes on the take-down guys hit their heads on the ice and injure themselves and I belive there was recently a death from such an injury in the OHL (not sure, but I think I heard that somewhere). This is one of the reasons that the Hockey comunity is so split on fights. Personaly I think that they should be allowed, but I cannot ignore that injuries do occour.

Finally though. These guys are awesome. The way they skate and move is beyond impressive. I have tried to skate a few times and even attempt one of those spinning jump things but a mild concussion clearly indicated to me that my involvement in ice skating will be purely audiovisual.
