This movie has a hole in it. It is stated as a known, that once gene-recombination is in, it is impossible to increase lifespan.
At best the replicants returning to earth supposedly seeking "more life," must be aware that they are acting on a hunch and that no extention may be possible. Ofcourse staging a mutiny and killing a human crew is a capital offense that will get them killed if caught.
So why risk return to earth? Deckard asks, and is lied to.
Probably is irrelevant considering that Roy Batty knows his mortality and basically is searching for vengeance to the Tyrell Corp. He knows that he will never live free and sooner or later he lost all his friends, even his love. Concept that is enforced when Deckard understood to be a replicant and decide to escape from the business/system with Rachel. It's a typical noir story in sci-fi key, you know.
@centurion180ad I would say it probably was a hunch. Like Tyrell said, they had all the knowledge that the geneticists had. But maybe they figured Tyrell knew more than he programmed them with? Who knows.
This is honestly what I hear in my head on Valentines day...

That question is never answered.
