I believe we are suffering greatly from the loss of "the commonality" when the car, tire, and petroleum companies conspired to: purchase, then dismantle, all electric streetcars, trains and trolleys from major US cities, beginning in 1930's. Los Angeles, CA was the first to go. ( For a source of info, check my video response to the bailout.)
