You know folks i saw Shane and Popes at the Morecambe punk festival. Other singers wanted to break down the back walls. This man was breaking down the back streets, the beyond towns. his voice was the mightiest hammer that has ever been struck. and when he sang this song I was shaking. I'm not weak, but I was shaking.
Such a great song.. love this!! Sorry I am new to the Pogues... but can anybody tell me... did they do many ballads like this? and which ones do u recommend? Thanks :¬)
@hejafish I would recommend "I'm a Man You Dont Meet Every Day", "A Pair of Brown Eyes", "Dirty Old Town", and "Sayonara". Let those songs entice you, and then explore the beauty of the pogues. sorry about the spelling, but naturally, I'm driunk
@hejafish I wouldn't say there are many just like this one, but Misty Morning Albert Bridge, Summer in Siam, Kitty, I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day (sung by bassist Cait O'Riordan), The Old Main Drag, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Fairytale of New York and Lullaby of London are some of their best ballads.
I close my eyes and think YES! this is the best then the next brilliant song plays and I am at that point in knowin' that YES! this is the best yet and on and on and on it goes with me and Shane MacGowan. Since I do not know when.
this always makes me think of my Grandmother Sheil, who instilled the sense of pride in Irish history and heritaqge in me. Don't knowif the choice of song is weird but it makes me always think of her. RIP Sheila O'Donnell, still miss you, Noni xo
My Irish great grandmother died shortly before I was born so I never knew her, but her son, and his son instilled the true Irish pride I currently have, in me. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have any connection at all to that part of my heritage.
don't know the whole history behind this so please enlighten me if i'm wrong !!!!fantastic song and sentiment can be a good thing but don't forget that people go to prison for a reason !!!!!
This version is incredible. It creates for me a perfect mental image of the entire scene...I'm not usually sentimental but two lines in particular always make me want to cry. The seagulls flying is a subtle nudge at how close freedom is in proximity, but how far in reality. Also, the verse where the loik is crying as the day slowly fades away... I just imagine a grown man sobbing in a cramped cell, knowing that the unbroken cycle of captivity will continue again come morning. Best version.
this is nowhere near as good as the dubliers version in my opinion.. pogues are brilliant but dubliners had something about them. they way they sang it..
@thebl1ZzaRd is allowed to have his own opinion. No reason to wish death upon him for enjoying a version more than another. I enjoy The Pogues more than Dropkick Murphys but i'm not going to tell anyone who disagrees to go kill themselves.
I love this song and have listened to many covers of it. I'd have to say my favorite by far is the duet from the Jefferson Starship off their 2009 record Jefferson`s Tree of Liberty. Check it out by the title "The Royal Canal".
@BrotherBadSeed Ah, you've got to listen to the lyrics brother..." and the seagulls were wheeling..high above the wall.." " ...and I wish it was with them, that I did dwell.." The longing and sorrow in the words are palpable and Shane's delivery is brilliant, untouchable in my opinion.
@SuperDsweeney Oh you are absolutley right. I love the lyrics, and the melody. I just prefer the Dubliner's or the Murphy's version. Although this is definately better than Dylan's, U2's, or Tossers.
Not sure if i like it i might like the Dropkick Murphys more. =\ just my opinion

Don't missunderstand me: I love Irish Folk and I listen to Dubliners, Wolftones etc. a lot.
But I just like the DM version of "this" song more, what doesn't mean I don't like this song.
For example Pogues' Wild Rover is much better than Murphys'
