  • Not sure if i like it i might like the Dropkick Murphys more. =\ just my opinion

  • wow best song ever

  • You know folks i saw Shane and Popes at the Morecambe punk festival. Other singers wanted to break down the back walls. This man was breaking down the back streets, the beyond towns. his voice was the mightiest hammer that has ever been struck. and when he sang this song I was shaking. I'm not weak, but I was shaking.

  • This is great but I have to give my preference to Luke Kelly.

  • Hope they come back to Zagreb again....Greetings from Croatia!

  • how does this only have 40,000 views?

  • no. i love this version. but i still reckon the Luke Kelly acapella version with the Dubliners is the best.

  • this song breaks my heart clean in two

  • Such a great song.. love this!! Sorry I am new to the Pogues... but can anybody tell me... did they do many ballads like this? and which ones do u recommend? Thanks :¬)

  • @hejafish I would recommend "I'm a Man You Dont Meet Every Day", "A Pair of Brown Eyes", "Dirty Old Town", and "Sayonara". Let those songs entice you, and then explore the beauty of the pogues. sorry about the spelling, but naturally, I'm driunk

  • @hejafish thousands are sailing, streets of sorrow/birmingham six, navigator, a pair of brown eyes

  • @hejafish I wouldn't say there are many just like this one, but Misty Morning Albert Bridge, Summer in Siam, Kitty, I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day (sung by bassist Cait O'Riordan), The Old Main Drag, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Fairytale of New York and Lullaby of London are some of their best ballads.

  • @jeffpalf1n1 TRUE THIS!!!

I close my eyes and think YES! this is the best then the next brilliant song plays and I am at that point in knowin' that YES! this is the best yet and on and on and on it goes with me and Shane MacGowan. Since I do not know when.

Ah, for sure this is The Best!!! ( :

  • the worst thing about pogues videos are all these wannabees who want to be irish

i mean just stop pretending, sit down, drink and listen to the god damn music.

also this is just the best band ever

  • its no wonder us irish are so proud, you hear ireland in this song, it means so much to me! god bless the irish!

  • I think this works because I could imagine Shaun being a prisioner. x

  • my mum used to sing this to me to get me to sleep

  • New Irish band CASTLECOMER do an AMAZING a capella version of this song.

Check them out by typing in "The Auld Triangle - Castlecomer"

  • this always makes me think of my Grandmother Sheil, who instilled the sense of pride in Irish history and heritaqge in me. Don't knowif the choice of song is weird but it makes me always think of her. RIP Sheila O'Donnell, still miss you, Noni xo

  • @nonirockify

My Irish great grandmother died shortly before I was born so I never knew her, but her son, and his son instilled the true Irish pride I currently have, in me. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have any connection at all to that part of my heritage.

  • jingle bloody jangle

  • don't know the whole history behind this so please enlighten me if i'm wrong !!!!fantastic song and sentiment can be a good thing but don't forget that people go to prison for a reason !!!!!

  • at times I say "what the fuck has Shaun ever done" then I hear something like this. This version leaves me breathless.

  • @1diesel1 SHANE has done more things than you could manage in 8 lifetimes - one of the best lyricists ever

  • i'm french, i don't understand the lirycs but i love this song!

    Kampai !!! :)

  • @therealdeepo the lyrics... pfff

  • @therealdeepo pfff .... it's a friggin historical document. Don't pffft lyrics!

  • @nonirockify I'm sorry... (the 'pfff' was because i wrote ' llyrics ' on my first commentary) :\

  • @therealdeepo the english are shit, they keep us in too small prisons. I wish I was down at the women's prison etc but with more Irishness

  • guiness makes you drunk!

  • This version is incredible. It creates for me a perfect mental image of the entire scene...I'm not usually sentimental but two lines in particular always make me want to cry. The seagulls flying is a subtle nudge at how close freedom is in proximity, but how far in reality. Also, the verse where the loik is crying as the day slowly fades away... I just imagine a grown man sobbing in a cramped cell, knowing that the unbroken cycle of captivity will continue again come morning. Best version.

  • Dropkick did it so much better than every other band

  • @SuckMyVEVO totally agree!

  • you can feel it, bloody brilliant

  • 0 people have no taste whatsoever. Good on you lot.

  • if u feel like this.... have a look at my posts and wake up

  • Murphys version of this song is fuckin lame.

  • @Duckofdeath67 lol....murphys are the best

  • @Duckofdeath67 It's different.

  • i love this :o) a genius shane is :D awesome live too!!

  • this is nowhere near as good as the dubliers version in my opinion.. pogues are brilliant but dubliners had something about them. they way they sang it..

  • This tune ignites something deep in me DNA. Thank you Pogues.

  • @thebl1ZzaRd is allowed to have his own opinion. No reason to wish death upon him for enjoying a version more than another. I enjoy The Pogues more than Dropkick Murphys but i'm not going to tell anyone who disagrees to go kill themselves.

  • Shane does exquisite justice to Behan's words.

  • Damn I love the Pogues, but all in all I think Luke and Ronnie are the true masters of this great song;-)

  • I like the Dropkick Murphys version much more.

  • @thebl1ZzaRd pretty obvious who the american is

  • @BloodofErin1798 neither ... nor. I'm German ;'D

Don't missunderstand me: I love Irish Folk and I listen to Dubliners, Wolftones etc. a lot.

But I just like the DM version of "this" song more, what doesn't mean I don't like this song.

For example Pogues' Wild Rover is much better than Murphys'

  • @thebl1ZzaRd yer a fukking moron,,kill yerself

  • Shane has a great voice, nay? There is something about this version. Hail hail.

  • I love this song, too bad it's so hard to translate!

  • woohoo fucking love this tune, brings a tear to my bellend!

  • @deeppiledreams Thanks for that mental image

  • @wigwanwo hehe sorry it's just such a touching tune it. Best of the slower Pogues tune... probably in my opinion.

  • best version!

  • I love this song and have listened to many covers of it. I'd have to say my favorite by far is the duet from the Jefferson Starship off their 2009 record Jefferson`s Tree of Liberty. Check it out by the title "The Royal Canal".

  • ewan mcall what legend. and shane to boss it

  • @jamespem What has Ewan McColl got to do with this ? This was written by Behan.

  • Well I like it, but it's a wee dull idn'it?

  • @BrotherBadSeed Ah, you've got to listen to the lyrics brother..." and the seagulls were wheeling..high above the wall.." " ...and I wish it was with them, that I did dwell.." The longing and sorrow in the words are palpable and Shane's delivery is brilliant, untouchable in my opinion.

  • @SuperDsweeney Oh you are absolutley right. I love the lyrics, and the melody. I just prefer the Dubliner's or the Murphy's version. Although this is definately better than Dylan's, U2's, or Tossers.

  • Coole musik^^

  • für alle zeiten die beste version!!!

  • greatest version. From the heart....Brendan Francis Behan style .... up the republic!

  • Though my favorite version is Dropkick Murpheys, this is still really good

  • this version gives me the chills, just awesome!

  • simply brilliant!!! this is by far the best version!

  • @alongcomesthewind have to disagree with you there mate, its without a doubt auld ronnie, who sung the best version

  • @BloodofErin1798 my father thinks so too, so that's okay :)

  • @alongcomesthewind

    Ok i disagree hugely

have you not heard Luke Kelly singing it acapella?

    ???

    now that's some serious shit.

  • wow....when u go from the kings to this it makes ur ears hurt a bit....

  • Jaysus!this is brilliant!!!!

  • Comment removed
