  • This is jazz at it's best!!

  • Listen to that gorgeous, achingly beautiful sound and melodic constructions of the one and only Hank Mobley. No tenor player out of hundreds has reached me more. Almost the same could be said for Kenny Dorham. It's all about making beauty.

  • Some jazz history texts treat this recording as the cornerstone of the whole hard bop movement. Great music and players--far better than "Song for My Father" (for juveniles). But Horace would write better songs: "Strollin'", "Ecarole," "Nica's Dream," "Moon Rays," "the Outlaw" for starters. Unfortunately, "Dad's Song" made tons of money and the result was the end of Horace's status as the Ellington of small-group jazz composition.

  • @caponsacchi eh, song for my father is pretty good...

  • Found this completely by chance, and I'm glad I did. It's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing :)

  • @ilap617 haha same, im so screwed, aside from the notes in class ive barely looked at it, listened to it probably about 5 times all the way through...not feeling good about it

  • @jwb4291 same class. any idea how to do this?

  • @mrwizparkour hahah nope, so screwed. think ill do it tomorrow.

  • Thanks for posatin' this. I just got thru reading Horace's Biography "The Real Nitty Gritty)" and he's a very insightful spiritual musician.

  • Horace always keeps it simple and direct. A great jazz communicator. Thanks for the post.

  • Art's solo is just ridiculous on this!!

  • At 1:19 in Silver's solo he's quoting Gene Krupa's "Thanks For The Boogie Ride" as sung by Anita O'Day.

  • I love this song.

  • Kenny Dorham- The Best Trumpeter.

  • Dizzy Gillespie's big-band version of this at Newport '57(Verve)is a classic, with an hysterical, overblown spoken intro for the baritone saxophonist,Pee Wee Moore.

  • Rogerjazzfan! Recomendei o David, meu grande parceiro de jazz esse video.

Maravilhoso poder compartilhar com amigos! Lindo demais!

Maga Jazz das Minas de Ouro :-))

  • Nice one Rog-thanks-david

  • @teazle2 thank you for the comment, David. 'Glad you liked.

  • This is my wife's favorite HS tune, because she LOVES to sing along with the words which Sarah Vaughan recorded on her "No Count" LP with the Basie Big Band. No Count??? Well, pianist Ronnell Bright substituted for The Count, on the '58 release, so naming the album was easy! We have a very worn-out CD of it (a "used" gift from Judy's father, also a total jazz nut!), which just happens to be able to play Doodlin' w/no problems, but not some other tunes on the CD, so we got lucky!!!

  • My second favorite composer next to trane.
