I couldn't understand a Gram-Schmidt example in my textbook so I found this video to explain it to me. Then I went back to my textbook to work out the example. Halfway through I referred back to the video and finally realized it's the exact same problem with the exact same values. I should probably sleep before I take my final

Why don't you just divide v2 by its length? What is the benefit of Gram-Schmidt?

@ZaneMcCaig Gram Schmidt not only gives you a matrix in which every vector is a unit vector, but it also forms an orthogonal basis in which every vector is perpendicular to every other vector. Orthogonal matrices have some very useful properties (for example, orthogonal Q inverse = Q transpose; also, Q times Q transpose makes a projection matrix). This process may seem like a lot of work (and it is), but the result is very useful.
