  • I feel sorry for the ones who had to pick that trash up.

  • I remember this commercial - it was produced by the very talented Julian Cole. As I recall, the Corvair was selected in part because the engine was in the rear, which made it easier to remove the front hood and place a rear pointing camera for some of the shots. The closing quote was from Walt Kelly (Pogo)

  • I CAN'T GET THIS SONG OUT OF MY HEAD! I grew up seeing the 90's version, but this one is way more soulful and rockin'. Whew!

  • This video tells a lot about TN, There are a lot of trash throwing nasty ass pigs in TN...oh yea; keep your trash out of my yard....

  • I was just talking about the JFG "come butter come" ad and am trying to find a recording of it....no luck but have found the history of the nursery rhyme. It actually goes back a couple of centuries. Also knew Irv Kane back in the day....great guy.

  • Excellent find, I remember it...

now, does anyone remember some kind of thing that played often, maybe late '70's. Had 1 or 2 grandmothers showing how to make or just churning butter by hand in old churn, to the vocals of (country accent - just listen to me)..."come, butter come...come, butter come..." ? I remember it, so does my friend, probably on WCYB Bristol.

  • @kbconv

If I am not mistaken.. I think it was a JFG commerical of some sorts... I do remember it... I am in Morristown, TN and we also received WCYB from Bristol, and that commercial aired on the Knoxville stations as well.. But I am 99% sure it was a JFG coffee commercial or some other JFG product commercial. Hope this helps..

  • I am from Nashville and I recall this as a kid, too! Thanks.

  • I wish that these were rebroadcast today! They don't get better than this!

Also, does anyone have a copy of the terrific tourism 'episode' featuring Russ McCown (Sir Cecil Creepe) where the aliens are identified as Yankees?

  • Remember this well. Was created by my father when worked at Hudson and Associates.

  • @volntitan When did your father create this? My dad wrote and produced original Tennessee Trash commercial in the 1970's. He also wrote 'Follow Me to Tennessee'. A great jingle.

  • Back in the 70's as well when he worked for Bill Hudson and Associates. He was account exec./creative writer.

  • I'm so glad I found this. I remember watching this in the late '70s, when we first moved to Tennessee.

It sure was a lot more clever than most PSAs.

  • thanks gamoonbat. I try to keep his memory alive as opportunities present.

  • 1975. I was living out of state then and never got to see the thing, although my brothers were laughing their butts off about it over the phone. Beautification officials were responsible for getting the ad pulled, since they claimed it actually increased the amount of littering... it seemed that Tennessee Trash had become a folk hero.

  • Classic commercial!..I remember it well!

  • you scum suckin sons a bitches stay the fuck outta tennessee. we dont need you and we dont want you neither. godamn bastards.

  • I remember this from the late 70's at Ft Campbell. remember the weather by George and the news report that use "Music Box Dancer" as the theme

  • Was that the late great Ed Bruce singing the theme song?

  • That is indeed Ed Bruce's voice, but it would be inaccurate to speak of him, at this writing, as "late". He is still very much alive.

  • The Greatest Public Service Spot Of All Time!

  • Its funny that I remember every word to this song. I never saw this one before though. The one that ran when I was a kid is the top vid on the right

  • I always thought this PSA was far more clever than the usual finger-wagging 'Don't litter because it's not nice' ones they had! Great seeing it again after all these decades (and I hope fans of this check out its sequel which features Elrod +Elvira with Elvira rocking the day)! LOL

  • While working as an EMT in Bowling Green, KY during my college years in the 70's at Western Kentucky University this PSA ran. Being the only one from TN, one of the firemen began calling me "Tennessee Trash" or just "Trash" for short. The nickname has stuck with me since. How would you feel being picked up by an EMT that everyone around is calling "Trash"? The actor is really Ed Bruce who played the sheriff in "Fire Down Below" with Steven Segal" and is a great guy.

  • Wow, I haven't seen this in 30 years. I was a kid when this was on TV in TN. I just thought of it and here it is on YT. Thanks for uploading. Wow, amazing that some commercials stick in the recesses of your memory even after all these years.

  • @23literford140 I know what you mean----Havent seen this commercial in YEARS!!!!!! Yes, thanks for uploading it!!!!

  • I remember see this PSA when I was young and though it was about as effective as the crying indian.

  • That's a funny exaggeration, but unfortunately not far from the truth. It seems to be getting better little by little.

  • Even today, in Fayetteville, Tennessee, you see stickers that say "Tennessee can't take l(it)ter anymore!" Maybe they SHOULD put the "Tennessee Trash" PSA back on the air.

  • Part III -

Irv was brilliant and extremely funny. Several members of the orchestra came to his funeral services & played his compositions as part of the service. Our family was not allowed to pay for our hotel and they insisted we move his gravesite closer than we had originally intended so people could visit the cemetary. We will always miss him very much.

  • Thanks so much for the info about your late brother! He sure seemed to have fun getting into the character, though. I remember reading an interview in which he said he put Vaseline in his hair to complete the look- and it took a week to wash it all out! It seems he ranked up there with the late Jim Varney for being a LOT deeper than his iconic role! Thanks for sharing that!

  • Part II

Irv was a consummate musician, able to play all brass and wind instruments, and possessing a wonderful voice. He made Nashville his home for over 30 years. In turn, Nashville found room for him. A "Google" of his name, will show him listed among the session men on many great country albums. He played a lead in a local production of Glengarry Glen Ross, and like many musicians, he did whatever he could to scrape together a buck. see part III

  • Irving Kane went back to bed, however, when he did not get his American Ace coffee.

  • This coomment must be split. Part 1.

    Um,

I don't know, that may be sung by Earl Bruce, but it definitely STARS our older brother Irving Kane, who passed in 1993. Tennessee Trash made him a household name in Tennessee, but he was also a composer of classical music, who conducted the Nashville Symphony playing his compositions in Tennessee and at Carnegie Hall. see part II

  • I grew up in Nashville near your brother. He was a great guy who make great contributions to Nashville's arts world.

  • @gamoonbat thanks. Hope you didn't get waterlogged. Sounds just terrible. Best to you.

  • @oak1day - I live in Valdosta, Georgia now. My dad still lives in Nashville, but he was high and dry up on the Belmont mansion hill. I think that it might not have been a great idea to build expensive apartment buildings down in something called "The Gulch"! !

  • I agree, there is no lower class than tennessee trash ;)

  • @gj4bama - ain't that the truth!
