2. it's great game with a great story

3. You will know for sure if you will like the second one or not

4. And you will understand the story of the second game better when you play it.

In the fear department I hear good things about Silent Hill and of course Resident Evil. Never played any of the Silent Hill series. I have played through RE4 and I thought it was amazing. Played through a part of RE2 and thought it looked promising.

Valve software's Left4Dead is being released this November, that may also be worth a look. If not for the fear factor than for the fact that any game created by Valve is just purely fucking awesome :)
