Genius...that's all. He transcends to another place when he's on. I don't know any other mando player on this planet who is as diverse and creative as Chris. His passion is palpable when you hear him live.
Thile needs to do Bach, because he can't play Bluegrass. New Grass yes. Which are nothing close to being the same. That's like comparing Metal to POP Rock.
Damn, I was hoping to hear some of those fiddle tune alternate endings! Yeah, I'm never going to play like that (I also didn't start playing mando until I was 35 or 36), but I agree that it is way too fast. He is incredible though - no argument there. I really like Goldberg Variation No. 1 he does with Mike Marshall.
@sosome57 Why the hell you want to here Thile do them. Go listen to a real Bluegrass mandolin picker. Bill Monroe, Ronnie Reno. Frank Wakefield. Marty Stuart. Sam Bush. Dan Tyminski.
@bluegrasssingingman Well, I prefer to hear baroque music on the mandolin. Everyone plays bluegrass on the mandolin here. I prefer to play baroque music because it is far more complex and more fun to play than bluegrass. It's also much more soothing to listen to. Bluegrass is pretty one-dimensional.
@sosome57 LOL More complex,Bluegrass is fun to play, Bluegrass will make you pull your hair out at times. there's times playing Bluegrass you try to get a run, or something you may be trying to do. It sounds like the most simple thing, and you can get it. LOL You think your hearing it right. Your fingers just won't cop-orate. Bluegrass can make you feel dumb at times. Then its time to lay it down, and go do something else.LOL Thile is a good mandolin picker. He's a great NEW GRASS picker.
@bluegrasssingingman Try Bach's Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin. I think this piece Thile is playing is great and a lot of fun to play, but there are others you might like. Thile really is an incredible mandolinist. He doesn't play Bach as well as say Ralf Leenen, but he is really good. I wish I had half his skill. I've played bluegrass, but over time I've come to appreciate baroque music. It really just feels right under your fingers.
@bluegrasssingingman Have you bothered to listen to Thile's collaboration with Michael Daves? That is as bluegrass as songs come. Thile is the best, at everything mandolin related. Whether you like his taste or not. Whenever he does reach back into his bluegrass roots, he never ceases to amaze.
@bluegrasssingingman, sorry you can't see how amazing of a player he is. But you don't have to come here and bash him to his fans because Chris Thile's bluegrass blood isn't as thick as yours. Ever consider that he just doesn't WANT to play bluegrass that much? True, you didn't say he was a bad player, but you said he "couldn't" play bluegrass. I think you just don't like the fact that someone that plays something other than bluegrass is more popular than your favorite mandolin players.

Thile's performance is technically flawless but the piece is played way too fast. Alison Stephens or Katerina Lichtenberg's rendition is much more enjoyable. After all a gigue is a dance right? imagine having to dance at this tempo!
when you're that good 'smug' is the least of your worries.... the guy just doesn't give a rip. he can look smug but just close your eyes and listen.... smug goes away.
He isnt even looking at the fretboard most of the time. I have seen some of his songs on Youtube and get a feeling that no matter where he places his fingers on the fretboard, the right note will come out. The notes are clean maan...real clean.
He does, he has two Dudenbostels but he recently acquired an Gibson Loar as well...I have yet to personally see him play the Loar but there are some clips of him on youtube with it...
Chris thile will go down in History for his Mandolin playing, Dancing, and hairstyles. He has truly revolutionized the way people look at the mandolin.
Sickest thing ever on mandolin. The thing is, when Chris Thile plays Bach, you don't think of the novelty of "cool... Bach on mandolin... what an idea." He could leave it at that, but he goes further and leaves you with a REAL thought-provoking interpretation of the peice.
Wish I could do that!

All the comments I see here are a teensy bit envious. Face it. If you play mando, you ain't ever gonna sound this good, so get over it.

I might be wrong, but I think the info means this is part 4 of 4.

It's 6/8 only if you (or the editor) cut the original 12/8 measures in half.
