Wow, pushing up the volume to distort the recording makes it "HQ".???? I guess Men At Work didn't figure this trick out otherwise all their work would sound as abysmal as this. Fortunately, all their work sounds awesome without the amateur sound engineers destroying it.
One day your songs will also be outdated and irrelevant to the latest generation. They will probably even criticize the terrible sound. However, you will listen to them and remember a brighter time.
not real HQ but definitely the quality I recall first hearing in 80's latenight rural radio listening... even swear there's atmospheric fade-out because of cloud movement...
Bring back memories of when I didn't have any responsibilities as a teenager. Those were some great days and wish I could take a time machine back to 1983.
Men At Work's stone cold best! Bought the album for it when it first came out! Others off this album got more airplay, but none are as great! Love the sax, the scale climbing guitar and oh those haunting lyrics! Went and saw them in concert, thought the girlfriend, now wife was gonna cry when she lost the T-shirt. This is the kind of song that you buy a great sound system for! Thanks for the hard work on this one Men.
This song is the best I've ever seen about anxiety disorders, especially PTSD- the fear that never ends, the flashbacks of horror that come out of nowhere, the unending and unrequited search for even a brief moment of peace of mind that never comes...
This song was released on the year I was born, so I don't know if the cool kids liked it or not, but I sure do. It's nice to listen to older music. When I listen to the radio now, I feel like no one is trying anymore. This song has depth, meaning and the subject of the song does some emotional traveling. It feels like a complete experience, not a single band member just looking for attention or a bunch of parts thrown together at the same tempo and in the same key. I hate today's music a lot.
@bedofrazorsqwerty To answer your question, yes...the "cool kids" LOVED it. Men at Work came about when a musical revolution occurred. And you are dead on about the scope of musician's today: Seems to be more about showmanship. What was once evoked in lyrics seems to be more effective as a performance piece. Another haunting tune with great background melody is The Motels "Suddenly Last Summer."
and yet a sort of greatness in dealing with them...
oh that dock and then those lights in the streets...one of best ever made video and song from '80s...this masterpiece of Men at Work takes me back to days of my adolescence...only who experienced that taste can understand what the 80's were...
I Rank This song at #94 on my list of top 100 favorite music videos of the 1980's. Austrailia's own boys from down under (no offense to AC/DC) packed a huge punch in the early 80's with songs like this. Men At Work had what i like to call the IT factor in their own style of Reggae/New Wave music and it shows. Though the band didn't last long, who will ever forget Colin Hay belting out those high voice lyrics and jamacian style vocal range.
@campex I bet this was shot on a monday or a tuesday night. You can tell by how quiet the traffic is. Man how times have changed. I remember the days when sundays you could go to ANY shopping centre and the place was closed. We used to play cricket in the car parks at Kmart cuz the place was utterly and totally deserted!
I have to admit, I forgot about you guys!!! Get back on the radar, will you? Go to CBC radio!! Canadians love your stuff!!! Ican't get to sleep !!! ..complications... hahah
Love it love it love it!!! This song represents a time when music was music, not all that fake crap they pass off on the radio these days! How I long for music like this again. Thank god for YouTube :)
@klmg0074 I have to agree with you on that. Why is it that growing up, I loved music from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, alot of 90's, but now, there are very few new songs that I favor. And I was born in 1970, I liked music that was made 20 years before I was born. And alot of younger people just like now music, and don't appreciate the classics. Hell, I even like jazz, blues, and classical as well. Some country, I think I like older country is better than this new stuff also.
This song "sounds" like 1983 to me. I was so young and lived in a world so different than the one I have found to be real. I wish we all had one chance to go back in time to one point and begin again from there. 1983 and 1984 were the highlight of my life. All glory is fleeting. Stay young.
It takes superior talent to write complex lyrics as well as accompanying music that only enhances the the words. A job well done. This song will live on for years to come as an example of true artists that were insightful and creative. Were those that followed even half as good....

This is one of my all time favorite bands, and this song was probably my favorite... though I loved their first two albums entirely. This was the first band I liked that wasn't a band my parents grew up with.
@FelipeCO95 ...FOR ME THIS THING WITH THE EYE IS HOT!!! well maybe now is completely different (long time no see) but in this video THIS EYE THING HELPS HIM ......my point of view
This song hit during one of the hardest periods of my life. It always reminds me of a time when I was just on the edge of survival - staring at possible homelessness and not knowing where my next meal was coming from. "It's time to walk the streets, and smell the desperation. At least there's pretty lights, and thought there's little variation, it nullifies the night form overkill." No kidding!
@mysticjaz It's message is universal, I was between two intense relationships when it came out, and thought that it must have been written for me alone.

Colin is an incredible singer songwriter... This piece is so timeless... This is still fresh today as it was in 1983... The rappers of the world could learn a lot from him
i actually like collin hay's version of this song, i think its better because he adjusted the song appropriate for the current generation so that everyone could enjoy it

Colin is an incredible singer songwriter... This piece is so timeless... This is still fresh today as it was in 1983... The rappers of the world could learn a lot from him
