There were MANY towns like Mayberry in the USA before during the 60's. Places like these were brought about by the American PEOPLE. Businesses were closed on Sunday because these PEOPLE attended Protestant churches. You didn't have the foreign, Catholic influence where a priest absolved you of evil behavior encouraged today. Proper law enforcement, no gun laws, a dollar backed by gold and a government that feared the citizens made for a pleasant USA. Building structures won't do it.
I thought I was going to see a "then and now"...where they filmed the show. Then when you go to watch this totally waste of my time story you come to find out this town has nothing at all to do with the show. I am fucking over whelmed.
Will Blacks be aloud to live there ? I never saw a Black person in Mayberry
not even driving through Did Barny or Andy ever see a Black man ? How would Elverna Bradshor react ? Would every shop in town put the closed sigh in the window?
@Rollman1 That's why there will NEVER be a real Mayberry, there were no 18 yr old punks walking the streets in Mayberry with their fucking ass showing, no loud ass radios blaring jungle music, no white girls with 7 mixed babies with no daddy in sight. No sir it cant happen on this earth anymore.
Very interesting i like the Homage to the show. THE REAL Mayberry is in culver city though and it was torn down. because nobody cared about real. The residents were dreamers and storytellers who in real life were city folk who loved pretending they were country folk. I think the reality is much more interesting than the fantasy.
This is pretty retarded. Mayberry isnt about the buildings, its about the people.
Its sad how some people think life is all about stuff. I live in a small town in central NJ, with 2000 residents. Everybody knows everybody, and hunting and fishing are the most popular outdoor activities. The waitress at the diner knows my order. I can't walk down main street without running into someone I know. I love it. Thats not something you can get buying real estate.
Perhaps you can own a replica of the Remshaw House on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake for under $225,000.00. Or stroll down Main Street to the Snappy Lunch Sushi Bar, before dropping off your iPhone at Emmett's Repair Shop.
I wonder if ol' Barn's saving up for that little old lady's used Lexus SUV (the one she only used to drive to the Metaphysical church on sundays)?
Gosh, it'll be so nostalgic at Smith Mountain Mayberry!
The indoor scenes, and even some of what we thought were outdoor scenes, were filmed at the Desilu Studios on Cahuanga Blvd. Outdoor scenes were filmed mainly on the back lot of the Desilu Studios called 40 Acres...the old RKO lot.
When Andy was in Mt. Airy to have an interstate highway named in his honor, he gave a speech acknowledging Mayberry was in fact inspired by his childhood in Mount Airy.
What he said was that he could believe it was because of the way they've tarted the town up.
If you go to his interview on the Archive of American Television, he tells the whole story. Sheldon Leonard came up with the idea for the show. Andy didn't like the idea at first, but he liked Sheldon Leonard. So he went along with the idea. One of the early writers of the show came up with Mayberry. It's all on record.
In my conversations with George Lindsey,Betty Lynne, Margaret Peterson Mancuso and the late Howard Morris, they all pointed out Andy's childhood as his inspiration. His Grandmother lived in the Mayberry community just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Patrick county Va., 15 miles from Mount Airy. There was animosity years ago between Andy and the old Town elders, but Andy repaired those bridges during his acceptance speech I mentioned. It's all on record.
But the fact remains that Andy did NOT approach Sheldon Leonard or Danny Thomas and say, "I want to do a show based on my home town." It never happened. He started throwing in familiar town names in the scripts because he hates made up names. All the people you mention are not from NC natives. What THEY point out is neither here nor there. I'm telling you what ANDY has pointed out. He has basically stopped arguing with the town of Mt. Airy and moved on with this life. It's all on record.
Well guess what? It doesnt really matter what you say because Mt. Airy is makeing a profit from the Show. I live in the Mt.Airy area /Pilot Mtn. (oopps) or should I say Mt. Pilot as it was called in the show. He may not have came up with the idea for the show but its strange to me that in the show child hood friends names were used as well as you said names of towns. Mt. airy is as close to Mayberry as you can get.So come to Mt.Airy and enjoy a MAYBERRY state of mind!!!!!!!
LOL. You scholar, you. I'm sure Mt. Airy is profiting from the show. That's why Andy hardly ever visits there. Thank you, I will come to Mt. Airy sometime, but not when it's all tarted up. Mayberry can be anywhere you want it to be.
I agree with you as I have been thinking about living there when I retire as it just about 5 minutes away from the lake. I see you live in Los Angeles, talk about to many fish in a fish bowl, that area is extremely populated. I use to live next to Washington DC until 1997 when I finally left as there were way to many people there as well. As you know, California has the highest tax rate in the United states and than you have to add your city tax to that. Here, taxes are low.

They might end up with another New Granada which "ignored the fact that a quarter of the population was 15 years old or younger."

Myers Lake was actually in Fanklin Canyon.

Andy has said repeatedly that Mt. Airy was NOT the inspiration for Mayberry. The show wasn't even Andy's idea.
