"Elmo and his friends." Pssh, please. Back when this first came out, Elmo was no more special than any other character, human or Muppet. That was one of the elements that drives this piece: All the characters are presented as equals-- Elmo and the Anything Muppet are no more important than the fish or the robin. We are all Earthlings, we all share the same home, and we are equals. This original version of the song would never fit in today's episodes of Sesame Street...
I was watching the Thanksgiving Parade today and remembered this song when the cast was singing it on their float a few years ago along with a number of muppets from the foreign Sesame Street shows. After the parade, I couldn't get the lovely song out of my head and sang it while I was working.
But I could never forget that one parade where everyone was singing it on the float. Not only the muppets, but the humans sang a solo line as well, Bob, Gordon, Maria, and Luis. Ah, memories.
This song is so beautiful, it made me cry as a child now it's making me cry as an adult. I'm so sad my kids will never get to know the Sesame Street I grew up with.
oh, yay. i go to read heartwarming comments about a piece of my childhood, and i see political arguments. *sigh* youtube is so full of haters. can't you just enjoy this beautiful song in peace?
I love this song, but the thing that makes me sad about it, is that no matter how much of this sort of encouraging message we make, society is still killing our planet, it's not fair :(
I hope everyone remembers this song when they select their meals... Do we really want them to contain cows, pigs and chickens? Our fellow Earthlings? Perhaps it's long overdue time to live in peace with our innocent animal brothers and sisters... We could thrive on a plant based diet and no one ever would be harmed needlessly. We are all Earthlings.
@beaelliott um, what about the fact that natural habitats were needlessly destroyed to sustain unhealthy numbers of domestic livestock? What about the fact that habitats of endangered animals are destroyed every day to sustain our unhealthy lifestyle, crude oil, palm oil for food products, sugar cane, all grown or mined where beautiful ecosystems used to stand. I would rather give my sympathy to the wild, than to monstrous overfed domestic animals that we created in the first place.
@Muppephile Of course all you say is true!!! But it wasn't the fault of "livestock" it was the fault of humans and our gluttonous consumptive habits.Eating "flesh" of any sort only exacerbates the problem. Sure, I grieve plenty for the Orangutans, the exotic birds, cats, etc..Also in America there is the loss of coyotes, wolves, prairie dogs, wild mustangs, and countless others all for the sake of "beef" - I believe we are concerned with the same issues."Fattened animals" should not be "food".
I'm confused. It says "We all live together, on a planet called the sun. We are all EARTHLINGS...." First of all, you would DIE on the sun and earthlings don't live on the sun. And the sun isn't even a planet!
of all the songs I heard when I was a child...this was the most uplifting song ever on sesame street. Now I cry everytime, hearing it...it bring back so many memories.
We will mis you Joe Raposo. The man behind such masterpieces as "Everybody Sleeps
and "Somebody come and play"...he wrote this after he found out he was going to die. Instead of lashing out in anger and confusion, he decided to bless us all with one last glorious insight- his best work yet.
@Treemeadow Actually, this isn't a Raposo song. It was composed by the late Jeff Moss (who often collaborated with Raposo) with lyrics by Sara Compton. One of Raposo's last songs, that's similar in tone to this, is called Let's Make a Dream.
Certain songs on Sesame Street always made me want to cry just hearing them as a kid. This is at the top of the list along with Ernie's "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon".
OMG this is the song I have been trying to find for a looong time. There is another song that reminds me of it and I could remember the scene with everyone sitting around but wow this is the ultimate nostalgia!!!
Vintage Sesame Street never fails to restore my faith in humanity, even though I'm far past the target demographic age for it.... I feel so happy and loved and safe whenever I watch something like this <3
Thanks to Children's Televison Workshop for posting this so the whole world can feel good ^___^ "Onnnn a planet of the suuuuuun" <3
I thought this was written by Joe Raposo as his Good-Bye song. It made sad that he died. R.I.P. Joe Rapsos (1937-1989). Jeff Moss wrote "Things that I remember" as his good-bye song Because he was going to die soon.
What happened to this show? No education and no real human spark to it. They really never should have abandoned the Children's Television workshop model.
Now it's just a vehicle for Elmo (and I guess his merchandising.) The idea of Sesame Street being a tangible place, that was safe, nurturing, honest and imaginative.. has been replaced by numb CGI and terrible child-style illustraion. So sad to see SS spinning its wheels.
@crock703 SS is a shadow of its former self T-T & I mourn. But within that shadow, it still manages to produce some hilarious stuff. Its all Muppet/live-action based, the CGI/Elmo's World makes me want to VOMIT! But seriously, one recent episode, there was a Pythonesque "Bring out you Ks!" scene, a poem in American Sign language w/English voiceover&beautiful visuals, and a crazy awesome Bear Family hibernation plot in which another bear muppet acted as their "hibernation consultant"! SS LIVES!
@jr52990 I am a child of the 90's and this song gets to me. It is hard not to cry when I hear this song. It is so beautiful and an urgent message of take care of the planet, be kind to all people, and that we are all one.
