  • Fantasic :) Looking to buy a Geddy Lee Jbass aswell, which would in turn make me have a similar setup as you (The bass + an EBS Multicomp)

  • After hearing this, I'm really looking forward to getting my Ashdown :D Might even have to get the Geddy bass :O Sounds great pal!

  • Thanks for these comments - you guys are really encouraging me to get deeper into my playing, I just don't spend enough time doing the theory and technical excersises - enjoy band playing too much!

  • PS the sound was second to none too.

  • GENIUS ! Thanks a million. A joy to listen to. Will inspire me to try harder. All the styles were perfect but nothing looks or sounds more impressive than a good slapping. Thanks again.

  • Dude ...stellar playing and i am definitely buying me one of those.

  • I've owned about 15 Fender basses. My Geddy is quite somply the nicest neck of them all. Fast, small, etc. It rocks.

  • dude you look so cool when you play

  • Sir, you are awesome! I think of buying Geddy Lee JB. Tell me, how does it's "ultra-thin neck" feels? Is it comfortable to play?

  • @SignorZucca

It's very fast and easy to play - feels very different to my P bass and took a bit of getting used to in that respect. All in all it just has a real nice Jazz Bass feel and is pretty well made. Thanks for your comment!

  • sounds really good

  • That's a really lovely warm sound =) I might have to get me a multicomp!

  • u see....no need of those crap 8 or 10 or 500 string basses to make great music............brilliant playng.

  • @nusemnu1

Thanks for that, I had a 5 string Status which I sold to buy this, 5 strings never felt quite natural somehow and in the end I restrung it E to high C, which made more sense, at least to me!

  • great demo , i have just ordered one , excellent playing , by the way , gaun yersel

  • @sdenny

Really nice bass, enjoying playing this a lot. Thanks for comments :)

  • Great playing.

  • ....NICE!!!!

  • This video is great. I was actually thinking about getting an EBS MultiComp pedal for that tubism mode because I love the sound it gives. More fattening highs....gutty mids, and bolstering lows. I actually have a Marcus Miller Bass and knows that the signature series don't have the same preamp that he uses...which is a Bartolini onboard preamp. But before I get any money to get that other stuff....I was wondering do you think the pedal would be worth the purchase?

  • @JazzBass7 Hi, the pedal is very well made and good quality and the comp very subtle (unless you crank up the internal settings). The tubesim is a great sound and I used that most of the time, if you want some 'stand alone' pedals then that could well be one to go for in your set up.

If you just like that sound and aren't too bothered about the compression aspect then I'd look at just an outboard preamp for a bit more control.

Really like your playing, good stuff going on there, good sound!

  • This the best demo of the J retro on Youtube. I have been struggling to decide between fitting one to my Lakland Darryl Jones or simply going with a Sadowsky outboard preamp.....I think this has helped me to choose the J retro.

The only issue I have is how much does the EBS pedal contribute to the shape of the tone? Btw, great chops...I enjoyed your playing.

  • @alembicbassguy

Thanks for that and glad you found the demo of help. Like the sound of the Darryl Jones fitted with the Retro, to my mind the Darryl is one of the finest basses made in recent years, just missed picking one up before I got the Geddy!

  • The multicomp just adds a bit of warmth the amp is lacking, the sound is pretty much that of the bass and the preamp itself, I know there's a straight fit from John East for the Darryl to take in the curve of the control plate.

Be interested to hear what you think if you get it fitted, stay in touch.

  • @Buzzgroove Hey, I didnt realise you are a fellow Scot! Nice one. The Darryl Jones is the best Jazz bass I have owned - not bad considering I have owned some very desirable vintage Fender's over the last 30 yrs!

It is a stunning bass. Cant wait to fit the J-retro!

  • This is totally awesome. Think I´ll have to stop buying other instruments everytime I´m in a music store and pick up a Geddy Lee.....and your playing is just pure....bassism :D

  • @phallogan

thanks for those comments, much appreciated! The Geddy really is a nice sounding bass - it's in for a set up just now, looking forward to getting it back.

    All the best,

    Allan

  • Hey man, this is amazing. I just bought the Steve Harris signature model but i'm contemplating adding one of the Geddy Lee signature's to my collection, would you recomend buying one??

  • @leedsunited4

I would go for one if I were you, it would be a very nice addition to your bass collection. It would be different enough sound wise from your P Bass (really like the changes you've made in that!) and also is a bit different from a standard Jazz Bass in having a real growly aggressive sound.

  • @leedsunited4

The neck is much thinner than on a P though and may take a bit of getting used to, I think it may be thinner than a standard Jazz at the moment. It would give some different sounds for recording as well.

Let me know what you think if you get one.

  • @Buzzgroove Cheers for getting back to me on this one. I've played the American Vintage Fender Jazz and absolutely loved, plus the neck of my Tobias bass (which is in my videos) is ultra slim so I'm used to slim necks. Thanks for the advise, I'll definately be going to try one out. Do you recomend the J-Retro pre-amp or just leaving it standard?

  • @leedsunited4

Only used the Geddy with the J Retro but the difference it makes to the sound compared to other basses I've owned is amazing, very powerful but natural sounding and with a great deal of tone shaping. The bass should sound pretty good as is, personally I like a good passive Fender but as I say the preamp is very natural, I'd fit one in my P Bass but don't want to mod it too much.

  • Thank you, really good to hear you like the slapping! The bass really is hot, it's in for a (long overdue I think) setup right now with a first class luthier, looking forward to getting it back.

    Cheers,

    Allan

  • You slap like a god!.........awesome video of an awesome bass!!!!

  • Man that slap tone is aggressive. I really like the playing too.

By the way, I gotta ask what strings did you use?

  • Hi, thanks for that, love that tone myself, the Geddy is pretty growly sounding. The strings are Ernie Ball Slinkys, on the vid they're new but I've found they keep their tone a while, they've become my faves after years using Rotosound.

    All the best,

    Allan

  • Great playing. Especially like the bit at 3:45 onwards.

What's your opinion on the GL Jazz? I've heard good things about them.

  • Hi, and thanks for your comment on my playing.

The Geddy Jazz is a very nicely made bass, it has a great action and neck (which I don't find as thin as some would have you believe, it's a high gloss finish though) and a real nice, dark tone. This one came fitted with the preamp when I bought it so I can't say too much about the original tone, though I like what I've heard from other demos.

  • In the past I've owned a '77 Jazz and am currently playing a hot rodded US P bass and would say the build quality of the Jap geddy is certainly better than the '77 and pretty much on a par with current US built basses.

    All the best, Allan

  • Did you tried to compare the Audere preamps to this one? What are the differences?

And what does the balance tone does?

  • I haven't tried the Audere although I've heard good things about it and from demos I've heard like how it sounds.

The balance simply gives you either more bridge or neck pickup and the other controls are bass/ treble cut or boost and mid cut/ boost stacked on top of a 'mid frequency' I suppose you'd call it, which gives a great amount of control over your midrange.

  • @Buzzgroove I'm probably going to buy this soon, I really hate the lack of the tone knob :(

  • @Buzzgroove I bought it, great preamp :)

  • Glad to hear you like it, it's very versatile and you'll get some powerful sounds out of it.

  • That's a weird little finger action you got goin on there.

  • Very very nice, tons of feeling and technique. I want to be in UK for make a band with you , all the best.

  • Hi Johnny, thanks for that!

The pickups are stock Geddy but the active preamp is whats giving that sound - there's a lot you can do with the tone but it still keeps the original character, great preamp.

  • dunno why u never became a session player

  • damn good tone on that mate, what are the pickups??

  • Ta for that, if you're gonna be slapin de bass it has to be a Geddy!

  • Very harmonic mate, very relaxing. killer slappin' ( Slappin' d' Baaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssssss)

  • your very good at bass
