CHOMSKY 5:25 -- "I'm sure [Obama] read the Chicago Tribune, so he knew about [Caterpillar]... yet he went to Caterpillar [in February '09]... I'm sure he didn't forget."
However...
CHOMSKY 5:48 -- "...Even radical labor historians didn't remember -- I remember talking to a couple of them and pointing it out -- because it's been wiped out of consciousness..."
5:42 through 6:00 -- "I don't think [Obama's] forgotten. And the labor movement didn't even react [to Obama's decision in 2009, because they didn't remember the events at Caterpillar in the 90s]. Even radical labor historians didn't remember -- I remember talking to a couple of them and pointing it out -- because it's been wiped out of consciousness. It's only 15 years, after all [between 2009 and the strike]."
I don't think he's saying "only 15 years [between the 70s and the 90s]."
Actually Marly, I did not comment out of context. I quoted Chomsky verbatim and clearly, explicitly [bracketed] my own interpretation of Chomsky. Imskin understood my interpretation, and responded to me very helpfully. I then pointed out that his response does not seem to rule out my interpretation. My interpretation may be wrong -- I readily admit that I am not at all knowledgeable about this subject -- but the source of my error has not been pointed out so far.
I'll have to look up these books.I think its important to read as much as possible.I'm really a horrible, terrible reader.Reading along with audio books helps me a little.I wish I had a teacher I could access & just ask questions to as I read because I get lost in the text and have to re-read over & over again & often times still don't retain, I'm trudging through Moby Dick right now.Hopefully my reading skills improve, maybe there could be more reading groups where people read aloud together.
No I don't think it is dyslexia--I think I have a lot on my mind--& have a hard time focusing being pulled in so many directions-there is a lot to learn--also I grew up in a TV era & never learned to read well when the those brain cells were really durable--I have a hard time focusing & retaining info--plus I'm learning bit by bit like a jigsaw puzzle--a few pieces here and there-reading out loud helps-I'd like to live somewhere where I can read out loud for hours & not bother anyone-
Reading out loud with people less ignorant than me who I can ask questions to---and provide some meaningful context to the activity of reading--when I just open a book it is like diving in at any point in the sea of information at any arbitrary point--I've experienced many intellectuals who are very impatient when you ask questions that to them seem stupid--makes people afraid to ask questions or even attempt to talk about anything-but that is how you learn-person to person--
Day to day activities, errand, chores & interactions are draining, painful, confusing & energy depleting-as well as all the stuff floating in my mind concerning family,society-then there's so much knowledge.I try to learn new things every day -for years I even began keeping a diary of new things I have learned-new words, names of artists, intellectuals, movements, philosophies. If I were on a hundred mile run id probably be at the 5 mile mark- also I like to exercise & practice music.
I hope we can create a society where we come up with new more effective, creative learning methods, tools & resources & they are made accessible to all-& that learning & knowledge acquisition is encouraged more than status & material gain- & that people have more time to cultivate their intellectual potential for the betterment of society.

Starbucks and other new companies put out the image that the workers dont need a union, that they and management are one big team working together.

In the first part he is saying that he is sure that Obama didn't forget the Caterpillar strike that happened in the 90s.
In the second quotes, he is saying the nobody during that strike (in the 90s) remembered that Peoria was built up by labor unionists in the 70s.

I'm trying to see what books Chomsky is reading...I see "stuffed and starved" and "Balibo" and something that looks like the "vertigo years"...

I also see "War Stars: The Superweapon and the American Imagination" by Bruce H. Franklin in there
