Gosh, is ESPN THAT bad? Newman is flipping and all they can point out is that Kevin Harvick and Marcos Ambrose are there. If FOX or TNT had broadcasted this, they would be like: "Oh! Newmans upside-down! Into the wall, HARD! OH! Now he's flipping! Terrible Crash! There's Harvick and Ambrose who tryed to avoid it!" Then Darrell Waltrip would say something and they would show a replay.
It was in the repaving in 2006. Elliott Sadler landed there in 2003 and then tumbled when it returned to pavement. If you hit the grass-pavement transition upside down, chances are your car is going to barrel roll.
I agree, NASCAR is not a demolition derby, of course the danger and risk, and the fact that these guys are pushing their cars to the very limit, and inevitabley there will be time where it goes wrong, but to want cars to delibrately wreck for entertainment is silly - this is racing, not a demolition derby!
Ryan Newman, I think you were hangin upside down too long cuz you're talkin out of your ass! Never bite the hands that feeds. I thought it was an exciting race, and I like many other people tune in or buy tickets hoping for some excitement and drama.
It's been a wild year for restrictor plate tracks, aside from the rain-shortened Daytona 500, the return run at Daytona ended in carnage, as did the Aarons 499 and now this...as one guy said, it's inevitable these guys will wreck, its all about making sure that when they do, everyone is okay, which in this case, and all the times this year, people have. Aside from the handful of crowd members who got a little hurt from the debris from Edwards' car at the 499, everybody involved this year has
walked away from these massive wrecks, when not long ago, people would have been seriously injured or even dead from these wrecks. Newman was obviously real shook up when he gave that interview, but the issue of bump drafting raises it's ugly head again...im glad everyone walked away from this one.
If the Daytona 500 ran all the way home, it is definitely possible it could have ended with a ton of carnage and tumbling cars as well...be thankful for the rain in that sense...
You're probably right, just look at the finale in 2008. Daytona is a little bit less prone to carnage than Talladega for some reason, I mean I know a big one kicked off at the end of the 400 this year, but still, just look at the wrecks we've had at Tally this year, much worse normally.
The main reason is because cars have a tendency to break away from the packs more at Daytona when there is long green flag runs - it is narrower and tighter which brings handling into play after about 10 to 15 green flag laps. At Talladega, it is all about aerodynamics and they usually get back together quickly even after green flag pit stops.
i understand that the drivers dont want to flip. but first ryan says the race was boring, then he says fans who want wrecks dont belong there.. sorry but wrecks are what make the races exciting. Thats why the marke talledega with the term "the big one". i dont want drivers injured, but wrecks are part of the nascar fun
It looks like NASCARS attempts to slow these cars down with the smaller restrictor plate failed. Put a smaller plate on and we have our first true COT blowover. Glad to see Ryan OK, though.
@UltimateEEnEfan
that's true i think fox and tnt are a lot better than ESPN

As bas as FOX is at broadcasting sporting events, no one's worse than NASCAR on ESPN.
Jerry Punch is horrible.

When did they pave the area where Newman flipped? If He hadn't landed on Harvick, that thing could have dug in done a remake of his 2003 flip.

I'm thinking landing on Harvick is what saved Newman from having the cage completely collapse on him when it would've landed squarely lid-first.

Newman is right, if u r a "fan of NASCAR" and you want to see crashes, you can go FUCK OFF!!! that isnt what nascar is about

Harvik saved his life when newman landed on his hood!!! NASCAR saves about 3-4 drivers life a year because of the new car saftey!!!

Daytona is 2 degree less in banking and it have shorter turns. That why the speed at track is 10 mph less then talladega

that's 2 times in a row newman is involved in a major wreck at this track. I not against him, I like him as well.

Newman is a great driver, but he has some very bad luck.
2003 Daytona 500 (Flipped)
2003 Engine Failure at Michigan (Caught on fire)
2003 Watkins Glen (Flipped on side)
And now this.
But the good side is that he left Penske and now drives a Hendrick engine! !
AjAllmendinger84 2 years ago
I don't think '03 was good to him.

That looked like a bad situation. The rescuers should at least signal right away whether or not the driver is okay.

I think that rear wing didn't help either, it was a big cause to Ryan's car flipping onto it's roof.
tubeyouguy1984 2 years ago
Then what was the excuse for the "old" car?
PneumaticTire 2 years ago
I agree, they should go back to the old spoiler.

How Ironic, They are going back to the spoiler after testing it in March.
It makes the COT look much better this way.
